A new sim and a whole new start.
Imagine it now, Fisher & Simmons hand in hand dancing in meadows... er
well maybe not but it could be some good fun and ras does seem to be

Proposal to revive RASCAR as an rFactor league
Tony Rickard proposed 'rasFactor', a new r.a.s. league for rFactor, and David G Fisher said RASCAR had planned this already. Several regulars signed up. Jan Verschueren and ymenard declined over rFactor's fictional cars and tracks, while others defended well-designed fantasy circuits and expected real tracks from modders.
Automated summary.

That's great and all... but its still fantasy cars and tracks. I also have

Bingo. But then don't all great affairs start that way? ;-)
No big issue with the tracks; as long as they're well-designed they'll make
for good racing. But count me as one of those totally underwhelmed by the
cars rFactor ships with. Guess now we know what Smokin' Bob is smokin'.
But - it has to be said that the platform is certainly a big step forward
for ISI, and with their stance on mods and engine-licensing, it should
provide the basis for some interesting stuff in the next year or so. The
F3's are the first hint of the mod action coming, and GTL should provide the
first proof of the engine-licensing side (even if it doesn't have all the
new bits under the hood). rFactor's not really revolutionary in any way,
and in some areas remains lacking; but some bits are indeed state of the
art. Most importantly, the whole package functions well enough to be a
viable alternative to the other online simracing platforms. That just
couldn't be said of any of its predecessors. Well done ISI.
What with all the recent talk in simracing circles about the role and value
of mods and developers' stances on them, to me rFactor looks like the
perfect test case for that particular business model (cut development costs
by direct distribution and unlicensed content while extending revenues by
engine licensing). Kaemmer & co. look to be at the other end of the
spectrum, so it'll be very interesting to see which plays out to be the
superior way for developers to thrive in this market. Starting to look like
other bits of the entertainment industry in fact - Indies vs. the Studios.
Indies seem to have all the Mo of late. Best to enjoy them while we keep
our popcorn warm for the next blockbuster... ;-)

I actually prefer a well-designed fantasy track to some of the crap which is
being passed off as F1 tracks over the last decade. I'm not saying all the
fantasy tracks are great, but there are features in the LFS S2 tracks, for
example, which are really enjoyable. Blind braking points over crests,
blind apexes, diminishing radii. All the nasty stuff which modern F1 has
denied us of.

Amen. A good fantasy track is often superior to a dull "real"

I'm not sure why a lot of "fantasy" tracks are actually rather boring

with virtually no elevation changes and simple constant radius turns
(no "compromise" corners either). In NR2003 I've seen far too many
of these. For some reason the racing community often comes
across as really conservative in some ways, and this is one of

That's true, I would prefer quality over quantity. Bull Run is the perfect
example of a great fantasy track. It should get ported to rFactor, its
probably the fantasy track people here have raced the most, its been passed
on from N2 to the NROS to N3, GPL N4, NR2002, NR2003 and all the various
mods.

You can't deny the factor of having the chance to drive around a track that
you would never in real life, tracks where you watched your heroes race on
them. That's the major attraction of real-life tracks, and a big point over
fantasy ones. Same for cars.

Please put down the Papy flag for five minutes.
He compared it to all sims.
A lot of people weren't running GPL. It ran poorly unless you had the very
latest computer setup.
The grip on the cars was way off. A few of us realized that from minute one.
Others had to wait until they were told by Kaemmer five years later before
they could figure it out.
There were fantasy cars and fantasy drivers in GPL.

It is being ported for rF. In fact some have already tested it. IF the
multiplayer for rF works out and especially if the driver swap option
becomes enabled, then you can bet the Bullrun 1000 will be a non-papy event
for the first time in it's history.

There's easily 50 road courses in NR2003 that are worthly in quality, if
many of them get ported onto rFactor, it's the good way and most of the
people will say goodbye to Papy for good ;)
For many of them there is no need to start from scratch and redo those
tracks.

Nah its not that at all. Papy's dead, buried. I don't hate rFactor, au
contraire its good from all that I see but I'll wait and see if its
supported by both the community and the developpers. Or else it'll be just
another sim, like GTR that stays on harddrives for 6 months until another
one gets released. I hope that's not true, but we cannot say that for the
moment.

Actually I'm sure of that, but how polished it will be, that's gonna be a
determinating factor of it's power over other sims, released or not. 'Cause
we have to remember that GTL is there soon. rFactor isn't as it is now a
full release compared to what GTL will be when released.

What's to say in 6 months they'll prefer GTL or whatever else new nearby
Christmas to mod as it's a better platform, with a more stable game engine,
lesser multiplayer problems, etc..? And everybodys gonna migrate the mods
to it instead of rFactor.

I sim to get an appreciation of the scale of the problem faced by the
drivers we watch on TV every weekend. I haven't seen them running Diamante
or Effexx as part of any sanctioned series yet, so, for me, it's pointless
to gain proficiency at these venues.
Obviously, it also interesting to play the "what-if" game using sims. To
this extend I'm surprised no-one's made Brooklands for NR2003 yet, but I
digress...
