Did you guys hear the comment on the Speedvision F1 Friday practice
show about Hans Stuck doing a sub 8 minute lap of the Nordschleiffe
(sp?) in a specially worked up BMW LMP? Love to see the onboard from
that one!
Hans Stuck's sub-8-minute Nordschleife lap in a BMW X5
Posters discussed Hans Stuck's reported sub-eight-minute Nordschleife lap in a BMW X5 fitted with the V12 Le Mans engine. Others recalled Lauda's 1975 pole and a 6:25 Group C lap listed on the circuit's site, worked out track lengths, and swapped stories of driving the Ring in road cars.
real motorsport
Automated summary.
I caught that too, I think he must have made a mistake. In 1975 Lauda
had a 6m 58.6s lap for Ferrari to get the pole for the GP. Others have
pointed out that someone went even faster than that in a later year and
not in a GP car. Lauda's was on the 14.189 mile lap length. I am using
stats from Autocourse 1975-76. I made a recording of an announcement
that day (out at Wehrseifen) that I am quite sure was for that lap,
apart from the historical significance for all us Ring fans, the best
part is the reaction of some fans to this announcement that I also
caught on my cassette recorder) I have often wished that there was
someway some GPL Wizard could take a wav file of that announcement and
have our Ring lap times and our names issue out of our speakers
substituting for Lauda and Ferrari, if necessary, as we head for the
North Curve, in German too, of course!

I thought I heard them mention this during the race today too. Didn't they
say it was a special Sport Utility vehicle with the LMP engine?

Yeah, I was surprised to hear that! BMW M5 with the V-12 LMP engine. Man,
I'd trade my Ford Explorer for one of those... and then still be short about
$75K I imagine <sigh>.
Dale.
Not an M5, but an X5 with the 700bhp LMP V12. I have an article about that
ride with the X5 Le Mans in a magazine.
I'll scan the article if I don't forget it...(it's in dutch)

Fortunately, they list both time and average speed, so the track length is
easy to calculate:
Formel 1 7:06.4 192.8 km/h 22836m
Gruppe C 6:25.91 194.33km/h 20832m
Kind regards,
Anton
The time I referenced was in qualifying for the GP in '75.
I understand that official lap records have to be in the race
(in this case Regazzoni, Ferrari, lap 7 of 1975 GP - his engine blew up
and he made only 9 laps) just like in GPL, right?
I have located my cassette tape of the historic event in question
and found that the announcement of the dead on 7 min lap of Carlos Pace,
Brabham, also was recorded without a gaggle of cars going through
Wehrseifen blocking it out. Pace's lap may have beaten Lauda's but for
his engine having a stuck valve while exiting that last chicane before
the
line (?)- called the braking chicane in Autocourse. His reaction to
this,
standing up in the cockpit while in the pits yelling and shaking his
fist at the mechanics (he thought at the time that they had
miscalculated the amount of fuel on board) is another example of how art
(GPL) reflects life.
It isn't the best recording of the 1975 cars - far from it - but near
the end of the tape I may have the best ever recording of activity at
the refreshment stand near that corner (bottles/cans being opened,
change
hitting the counter and cash register doors slamming shut!

I found an article about it on the American LeMans Series website
here...
http://www.americanlemans.com/News/News.asp?ID=279
Not too much information there, but they are stating it is a world
record(?)
Stuck comments that the X5 reached a top speed of 311km/h on the
straight! Totally insane!

1981 Toyota Starlet 1.2s
Great handling though for what it was - it had the sharpest (15:1 ratio i
think) lightest steering of any car I've ever driven, and rear wheel drive
(not that you could really tell unless it was wet or on snow/ice!)

drive
Toyota Starlets were/are very popular with the short oval saloon formulae
here in Britain. The actual toyota engine rarely stays in, but the chassis
is ideal.
One of the reasons I love Gran Turismo 2 on the PSX is the chance to rag
around in these plastic shopping carts :o)

Hmm this is true to a point I think the ring kind of sucks you in though.
Example, last time I went at easter I thought I'd take my first lap easy. By
the time I reached Hatzenbach II I was braking as late as I could and
screeching the tires round the corners. When I reached Schwedenkreuz I had
the back end come out on me and nearly lost control Yikes! not a place you
want the to happen, so I took it a bit easy down the Fuchsrhe. However by
the time I was at Adenauer Forst the tyres were squealing again. It turned
out to be the quickest lap I did all weekend - So much for taking it easy!
I managed to restrain myself a bit after that - I didn't want another close
call, but it's so easy to find yourself going faster/taking more risks than
you intended to.

Very true... there are also the "ooops, 1997 road cars don't really grip
*that* well, however slow they seem to be going compared to 1967 GP
cars" -moments. <g>
