rFactor won't start: anti-virus and firewall conflicts

A user could not get rFactor to launch after activation. Suggestions included disabling firewalls and editing registry entries. Several users found the cause was anti-virus software such as CA eTrust/Vet or ZoneAlarm, as warned in the readme, and pausing or excluding it fixed the problem.

Dilemma, Installed (duh prepaid through link at the website) before reading it would been easier after I downloaded the game... well that was a week ago, I had a couple minutes to give it a try, hoped the key would be there when install was done downloading... nope it shows up later like the next day. but I snuck in the next night to the computer (I was supposed to be helping with chores ya know...) anyway Installed now that I had the key in the mail...Install does go, it launches, installs all good and all, pops up the code page, I give it the code, launch the config as is all done by default , looks like good to go and it launches ready to run but bammo, windows firewall tries to block it, I try to click allow... but (maybe) not in time, the big usual RFACTOR full screen pops up, & that is all she wrote folks, so knowing (read that as assuming) I had missed the allow button, and I couldn't get out, I reboot (hard power button) goto firewall settings I see 2 entries for rFactor. I delete them both and stand ready to allow them... click rFactor icon, little screen comes up, that is all she wrote... nothing, I'd give up but now I'm pissed, what is up with this game. uninstall re-install still never asked for new key locks tighter than shit. (** I have to admit I uncertain about the actual chain of events of course, of when code is entered, just seems it was finally ready to let me play.... that was a week ago tomorrow, BTW. but it was and apparently accepted? SOL, because I cannot duplicate any of this, it refuses to run) even after removing and reinstalling, just plain ass locks up full screen (black with image space shoeing?) damn, demo worked, I have GTLegends working fine (if I don't launch rfactor 1st that is, if I do I dont get my system back, ever!!! (100% processor, no drive activity to speak of.) any help to be had or ideas from you guys here at RAS? Thanks
Why didn't you just turn off Windows' firewall for the time being, instead of deleting the instances of rFactor in the settings? You have tried disabling the firewall and then seeing if it works? Also, if you have to uninstall, you'll probably need a new key, possibly (I think you're allowed three). But maybe after uninstalling run a registry cleaner and delete all references to rFactor. Make sure, also, that the rFactor directory is completely deleted after uninstalling. Check everywhere for instances of rFactor which may appear on your hard drive. Above all, disable that firewall for the time being. Software firewalls are one big pain and I avoid them at all costs, seeing that oftentimes they do more harm than good. I would certainly contact rFactor support and explain all this to them. They seem to be pretty good in providing the needed support. Alanb

My guess would be that the firewall is still interfering. Maybe try temporarily disabling the fire wall and running rFactor.
Alan, Please (ha) forgive me, never shared the gaming PC with the family, usually I have my pc everyon else has one other... the good old days... anywho, I tried it without firewall on also in there somewhere... Not sure, but then it was a week until tonght I got to play with all of this again... after betterhalf discovered porn popping up as she helped him goto Yahooligans (just wasnt right)... so of course 1st oder of business it to get the think blocking correctly, then get to play with the games... I cant keep shooting myself in the foot is all... I just dont have the time (laugh, {please}). since I was afraid to undo the locking down proeceedure, I guess a good reg cleaner would be nice... This game has way too many bugs in it to be released or even have an asking price of 40.00 bucks.

and we didn't get people asking how to get gpl, n2k2,n2k3 etc, etc, etc running properly. didn't get complaints about ai in other games. didn't get people asking how to get their controllers working in gtr. haven't had anyone ask how to get fps increase in any prior games. we haven't had people getting ctd with other games. show me one game that has been released where there haven't been issues! the game ain't perfect. big difference is the devs are in the forums, listening, watching and offering assistance. cheers steve

Praxiteles, There's a start and thanks. hopefully I can try something by this weekend. I get my information by reading here and RSC, and I havent read anything that is shedding light on this but I posted at midnight my time. Can anyone shed light on what are the events that are taking place when I click the rfactor icon (when installed)? is it crashing trying to do intro's? is it supposed to check in with a website for key validation, updates, or what? havent seen anything act like this before on a machine that is game ready (hardware wise) but I recall back when some games crashed trying to view intro type vids and or sounds.. Thanks Praxiteles Democritus enlightened us with:

You don't need a reg cleaner, you need to clean up the spyware and check for viruses. For cleaning spyware, here are 2 free programs that are always recommend. There are easy to work with. AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ Spybot http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html You should also check for viruses. I am not familiar with the free programs, someone else will probably suggest one. Your system needs to be clean to at least give rFactor a chance to run. Good luck, Russell
RK, I have both those tools, things seem to be clean, plus: like I said the YAHOO security suite, {maybe that makes you laugh also, I do as I type it, as it sounds oxymoronic} but it seems as robust as symantec's boggy suites I been exposed to, we use NAVCE at my corporate job. BTW, in the Yahoo stuff, the only let down is the fact that if you are not logged on as the ADMINISTRATOR in xp with the Accounts Administrator logon (for dsl and et al accounts therein) you dont have much of a 'dashboard'. again I am used to trying to figure out what is wrong on MS operating systems. At home I admit the time to muck with this has dwindled, to not as much as time I wanted to ENJOY the games I have or install on there. Last week I got 1 of the 2 things to go, 1st was Trouble Shooting the GTLegends demo and gettting it to operate: and installing rFactor, which would NOT run. FYI, I finally found the obscure link to re-enable it the child web software and run several utils including the 2 you mention plus hijack this. All of that that took about 2 hours of my usuall 3 to 4 hours to "play" a week, plus the lockup and rebooting due to rFactor. So trying to speed up the trial and error process of elimination and trouble shooting, I enlisted the help in RAS. Like I said, I dont usually just do stoopid stuff, like whine at 1st glance, I know that is unusuall around here at times, and I admit I spaced off the AV sw (see the post about GTLegends I made?). but I am digging into all of it, more than I wish I had to. So can you tell me what should be happenging, I launch the game via ICON, I get small imagespace & sound, black screen with Rfactor showing, that is all... 1st time it took what seemd like eternity to go from Image space & sound "splash" screen to the RFactor full screen lockup, subsequently PC is toast and reboot is inevitable (however I have NOT had the time to see how long until, MAYBE it continues finally?) Hate to think I would have to call home at noon to have the little woman launch the game so I can finally play at say 8:pm that evening... thanks for the suggestion, and the chance to clarify and add to my delema. I am semi sure it is a decently clean system.
There's a difference here... This is about Copy Protection getting in the way of someone enjoying what they PAID for. The other stuff was actual game issues. -Larry "Steve Whitty" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GpATe.25630$[email hidden]...

It should just come up with a RFactor splash screen then start. Why don't you try starting it with your internet connection disabled. Go to control panel/Network Connections. Right click the LAN icon and select diabled. You are now disconnected from the inernet. Do the same to enable your connection later.
Well, trying to eliminate the lockup, not add to it, youwould think some kind of pop up would ensue when it cant see what it needs, but alas if it is poping up, I cannot see it. I read about 2 things at rsc and here, sent links or FW: to home email to check out later. thanks Praxiteles Democritus enlightened us with:

After the rFactor screen you should be taken into the sim with the same basic look as the demo (three selections on the left hand side). I have no idea what information is being sent out. I allow rFactor.exe because it needs to get through the firewall to play on line. I changed my graphic driver and rF Config.exe was run when I tried to start the sim. I was surprised that it wanted to pass through the fire wall too.

more info, had a second reinstalled everything, killed XP's firewall... & no registry entries found for rfactor or trymedia found as you suggested... so clicked on defaults in config utils... 800x600x16 make shortcut figured this time Ill let it run while did my chores. took long time now again, for the splash screen even another few minutes to the black rfacter (cusomise control connect) left then... figured it locked up but... 10 minutes later, I came back it was ready for me to give it a name (profile) with DOB (optional) and location. it was like I was bubble sorting 300k list on an apple2e... slow as shit, now took 3 minutes to get my nick in there, take one letter then forever to take next letter... hit accept wait 3 minutes (hardly no drive activity) and ask what to drive (you know the screen) wanted open wheel I thought. click that and crap I decided I better go back and report. yeah something definately not right there. to me it seems theres some process going on in the background that is eating up all the resources. I could be wrong though. run the rfconfig again, but select windowed mode. see if you're getting any pop up screens when the game is trying to launch. if that doesn't work, best thing to do, as you said, you were heading to rsc. shoot a post in the tech assistance section. hopefully the devs will spot it shortly, or if someone else has had the same prob, can sort you out. cheers steve
Well shit, Im onto something, A dude running Zone Alarm had same symptoms, killed ZA, and everything is fine... But I have a fricking DSL provided freaking home firewall, THe pos has settings but nothing like I would fk with turning off for what game???? BTW, So, what is Rfactor doing trying to make it's own unsolicited connection, and how come NR03, and lots of other 2 way apps all work fine, like P2P, all the chat utils, and teamspeak and VIOP and crap, but this game? dont tell me it is the firewall, everything out going is being allowed ... Disallow unsolicited inbound traffic. NO NETBIOS NO remote management... that is it. Steve Whitty wrote:

the dsl supplied firewall should only be causing you problems if you're trying to host. can you get in the game yet? if so, go to "connect" button on left of screen, and then settings. setup a racecast account by email addy and password. register account. exit game and restart. stay in windowed mode looking for any pop up screens. see if that works. cheers steve
I had the same problem. In the Readme it mentions that rFactor won't run with Vet Antivirus. Well I'm running e-Trust EZ Antivirus... otherwise known as Vet in Australia. Turned it off and voila, up and running. You can actually snooze the antivirus for a nominated time. I tried ten minutes and rFactor kept running after that. Hope they sort this bug soon. On the next launch, rfactor took a couple of minutes to come up, in fact I thought that the machine had crashed, but all was fine after another reboot, and I've never seen the problem again. yep EAV caused mine to lock up too, just added it to the exclusion list and now it starts fine. I still have the blinking track syndrome, which someone said I need new video drivers (haven't tried yet, but demo is ok??)

Man! Steve, Thanks to believe it or not a post in here by Ymenard, and would you believe it, (oh yeah I am getting used to being the problem here the last 2 weeks) Least again, I am partially to blame on this one, but it was the Antivirus app (that is nicely bundled with SBC-Yahoo DSL). It is by Computer Associates, It is taking time to get used to this fking software, I thought I had disabled it the 1st time even back with GTLegends, I thought I had killed it... but I find out, apparenlty not. Finally figured out how to set an exception for the exe, & runs like a champ now (I think, I still havent had a chance to drive the cars yet, ONLy because it was late when I figured it out, and I was too damn tired after stayin up all night on tues evening after I gave up, running legends. Damn I love the legends game, Im doing best laps is 135.6 on the default setup now (long track). Steve Whitty enlightened us with:

I had that same problem when I first ran it. Took me forever to get my name in it. Once I got past that, things were fine. I did notice it loads a lot faster if I disable Zonealarm. "Sting32" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:k7NTe.3375$[email hidden]...
