Frustrated GPL driver announces he is quitting

Jeffrey Rowe said he had boxed up his wheels and was quitting GPL and the group because his GPL Rank handicap was not falling fast enough, despite reaching about +10 in three months. Others urged him to race online for fun, and one poster said switching to a cheap joystick had dropped his handicap dramatically. This led to a discussion of joysticks versus wheels in GPL and Superbike 2001.

I have turned off my gaming computer, unplugged, boxed, and stowed in the far corner of my closet all three sets of wheels and pedals, declared GPL the bane of my existence, and now I shall say goodbye to ras. Since 14 April 2001, when I installed GPL, my handicap has fallen to 10.03. Which isn't low enough. Stupidly, I insisted on beating the handicap game before racing online, which I hear is incredibly fun. The handicap battle, of course, can never be won--at least not by someone with my meager talent--which meant that I was doomed to daily exercises in frustration as I attempted to post new PBs with the same frequency as I did early on. (The goal was to be negative, not to beat Huttu.) I ceased to enjoy racing because I got angry if I wasn't lapping near my PB. What I needed was a version of GPL that didn't show or even record lap times, just time differences between drivers. Then, instead of cursing at the Glen because my 1:06.02 during qualifying isn't close to my PB of 1:05.79, I would see that I've captured pole by being 0.2 seconds faster than Clark. I could have posted a 1:10 and Clark a 1:10.20, but I wouldn't know it. It is about winning races, isn't it? There has to be more to it than trying to go around the track, all by myself, a tiny bit faster than I did yesterday. When I can get over my fixation on PBs and handicap, I'll come back. But for now, I'll just thank everyone here for all the help and the friendly emails, and say goodbye. --Jeff +10.03 (final)
Jeff, Sorry to hear that your frustration has overcome the desire to enjoy the challenge. I have been running GPL almost since it was released and my handicap hasn't matched yours. I hope you can come to terms with the desire to be the best and the fastest and come back to the fold. There is much to be gained by facing the challenge and enjoying the journey. I learned too many decades ago that not everyone can be best. I accept and enjoy whatever insignificant achievements I can accomplish. If, on the other hand you don't want to continue the fight, I might be willing to take some of your equipment off your hands. Shit, just HAVE FUN!! That's what this stuff is all about, FUN, it's not serious, it's not cancer or heart disease, it's FUN. Don't worry about how fast you are Jeffrey, but simply enjoy GPL for what it is. A lot of us havn't even bothered putting in a GPL Rank, as that is not what GPL is about to some of us... We just have fun and race with like minded drivers in a clean and friendly environment.. Winning isn't everything, in fact to me, winning is nothing, staying on the track and having fun is what i enjoy and strive for. You'll be back :)) Take care. I agree. Sounds like boxing up his computer was the best thing he could do. When a game stops being fun, time to stop playing. Why don't you just play something else? I haven't played GPL for more than a 10 minute session in over a year. If you need a total break from driving games play Deus Ex, if you just need a break from GPL, try NFS:Porsche Unleashed or Viper. Good suggestions from everyone for you .. why not try microsoft's new Train Simulator.. while it's not quite as fast, at least the steering input required is less ,and the 'game' doesnt speed up the passenger schedule on you either ! Well, I installed GPL on April 13 of this year and would've given up already if it wasn't for one thing: a joystick. I tried for weeks with a wheel and couldn't get within 5 seconds of the Papy benchmark at any track. I switched to a joystick and my handicap dropped from +80 to -1 in four days (history file is under the name dougcio if you'd like to see it). I went negative about 10 weeks after I first installed the game. So there you go:) dc
Before you box that sucker up, get yourself over to VROC :) Seriously, I've never been one for hotlapping, far too frustrating. Simply from driving online races and the occasional AI race early on I am currently at a GPL rank of - 44. If you're at a handicap of 10 after 3 months you certainly don't lack the talent. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spammers> "Jeffrey Rowe" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9ib3gr$c1r$[email hidden]... > I have turned off my gaming computer, unplugged, boxed, and stowed in the > far corner of my closet all three sets of wheels and pedals, declared GPL > the bane of my existence, and now I shall say goodbye to ras. > > Since 14 April 2001, when I installed GPL, my handicap has fallen to 10.03. > Which isn't low enough. Just curious Doug, what kind of joystick and what kind of wheel? What do you think it is about the joystick that makes it easier for you to drive? How do you have the controls mapped? I tired GPL with both a CH Products wheel with the good CH Products pedals, and also the Logitech GP wheel. The joystick is just a generic one I got off of eBay for $5. I use the regular X-Y axis for controls (Y being gas and brake of course, X being steering), and I have upsift and downshift mapped to fire buttons 1 and 2. I think one of the reasons a joystick is so much easier is because there is less "travel distance" in the controls. What I mean is that in GPL you often to have make some pretty big corrections in steering, and also have to throw the car around a lot. With a joystick you can go from steering 100%left to 100%right by moving the stick about two inches, on a wheel that'd take probably 8 inches and and maybe a second longer. It just gives you a lot better control of the car I think. Acceleration is the same way, you can really manipulate the gas in the corners by just a slight movement of the stick (and I find it difficult to control anything with my feet anyway:). Also in general I find it a lot easier to not have to coordinate my hands with my feet, unless you're a professional race car driver I would think most people would have problems with a wheel/pedals for that reason, I know I do. I think a wheel is good for driving where you have to be "smooth" (like ovals), but for GPL I think being able to really throw the car around and make quick corrections in more important :) Make sense? ;) In all fairness I did play N2 for a couple of years with a joystick, I switched to a wheel for N3/4, but never enjoyed it as much as N2, so I went back to a joystick fo GPL. GPL is absolutely wonderful by the way:) I can't believe I missed out on the first 3 years of it... I was waiting for N4 to come out before upgrading my computer, what a mistake that was... dc
> Isn't steering help on by default with a joystick? No, GPL can't tell a joystick from a wheel, they both just use an X and Y axis... I think if you try to use a keyboard it forces dirving aids on, but even I'm not that crazy to try that :) dc

I could never get the hang of trying to steer with one axis and accel/brake with the other. Wouldn't you get a quicker(and thus easier to control/go fast) response with a joystic no matter WHAT game you ran? I'm about to install a joystick so I can play Superbike 2001. A quicker response shouldn't automatically equate to being faster. You can easily be too quick with your inputs sometimes and cause an unecessary spin. Might be a good idea to take a poll on this newsgroup and see how people have fared with joysticks in other sims. I would hope it wouldn't be the case for all sims. Imagine if I told you I was much faster in GP3 using a mouse instead of a wheel. What would that say about the sim? A joystick for a motorcycle sim makes more sense because you steer a bike mostly by shifting your weight and leaning. Eldred, If you find a good control setup for SBK2001, please let me know. I love the game but I haven't found the perfect controller for it yet. I have tried my Logitech wheel, my Sidewinder FF joystick, my Sidewinder gamepad, and my old Interact handheld wheel/gas trigger stick and none seems perfect. I bought the motorwheel from http://www.ergenic.com/. It's cheap, it's plastic, but it works far better than a joystick or wheel imho. Andre

What problems did you have with the Sidewinder joystick? I'd think that would work fairly well... I don't remember which joystick I have (I bought it to run a league race on a laptop while out of town), but I know it's not FF. Maybe that's the difference? I'll let you know what I discover. But it's easier to train yourself to be easier on the controls than to be in trouble because you CAN'T react fast enough. I moved from a T2 (non-FF wheel with combined axis) to a TM-FF (FF with split axis) and I may have lost up to 2 seconds per lap. I'm sticking with the TM-FF though :) Reasons for the loss of time: 1. Without FF, you can pretty much react instanteously to the car. Similar to a joystick. 2. I only race GPL once a week, so I might be a bit rusty. I certainly think more about not upsetting the car so actions from #1 aren't required. Jason. David G Fisher wrote:

The main problem that I had is that there is too much travel in the stick. If you go from turning full left to full right, the top of the stick travels about 5 inches or so. I was unable to make turns quick enough in SBK, even when grasping the stick by the base to reduce the amount of travel as much as possible. It sounds like you never found a calibrate routine to make the required travel less. I though I'd just missed it, but maybe one doesn't exist. If it's using the Windows calibration, maybe you could create a seperate controller ID. Have that one calibrated for less travel to produce lock-to-lock steering... Hmmm...
