'Abbakus' complains of RSC ban and is unmasked as Jeff Reid

A poster called abbakus complained about being banned from RSC without explanation. Regulars compared message headers and IP addresses and concluded it was Jeff Reid under another name. Reid eventually conceded in jest, then claimed it was a friend, and the group mocked the episode.

I was away on vacation, got back two days ago and find that RSC has banned my acccount. I didn't violate any rules. I emailed "webmaster", but no reply. What is going on?

Apparenlty 68.31.201.198 is some type of firewall ip (hundreds of users will appear to have this same ip with the firewall option). Sometimes non-firewall users get one of the firewall ip's due to some bug. Anyway, they told me to power cycle my cable modem, and now my ip is fixed again back to 68.4.214.134. Oh well, if there was an ip match, then that could explain it, but you'd think that someone from RSC could had responded and explained it.

You'd think that RSC would be aware of firewalled ip's though. Then again, since they provided no explanation, it may have been something else. Also looking at some older threads, Sirrocco claims that it was a different player (not jeffr) at RSC that that was posting using different accounts.

Hmmmm... bringing up being banned from RSC in RAS. Looks like Jeff. Replying to oneself several times in one thread. Looks like Jeff. IP addresses from a similar range, same ISP, same use of a hotmail account, same newsreader. That certainly looks like it could be Jeff. And really, does anyone think that someone who has made their FIRST usenet post EVER under this name, on this subject, with all these similarities ISN'T dear ol' Insane Jeffy who's now nym-shifting? Dude, if RAS was a webforum you would've been banned long ago. The way you act here does nothing but show everyone that you deserve any ban you get. Start up your own webforum where you're the boss, or stay on topic here about SIMULATORS and stop whining about RSC. And lastly, grow the hell up. KenB

Dude - if you didn't give it away by anything else, it's this right here - that you REPLY TO YOURSELF. Under your other nym you will have 20 responses in a 30-post thread, and half of those are replies to yourself - sometimes as much as 3 times. What do you do under the new "no, no I'm not Jeff" nym? Reply to yourself several times in a thread. Stop while you're only slightly behind...... I know you won't though, so have fun resetting your cable modem before every post to try to fool everyone that you're different kooks, er, people. KenB

I don't see much point in responding to this thread, everyone on this thread here already has their mind made up. You see multiple ip's for Abbakus because a group of friends decided to post using that name. I don't know how Cox Cable does ip's. Until now, I had the impression that they never changed, until I checked the ip's of my older posts. I don't know what causes this. I do know that resetting the modem doesn't cause it (after trying about 5 times). Most of the time, my ip's are the same. With Cox Cable, you can have up to 3 ip's in a household, one ip per computer. The computers need to be networked via a switcher to a common cable modem. I'm one of about 400 customers that has two ip's: 68.231.111.244 and 68.5.243.208.

It wasn't me, just a friend of mine who posted on his own without any instigation on my part. I'm not responsible for the posts my friends make. As whooo / Cliff pointed out, "advocates are banned at RSC"

Ok, swear on the lives of your family that you are not abbakus.

What good would it do? Do you think anyone would honestly change their minds? I'm 53 years old, I don't have that many family members left and none of them uses RAS, so how about I swear on Whooo's life that I didn't post here or at RSC as abbakus instead? Whooo, if you're still alive after this, please post and let us know. Also note that when I stated that I thought that RSC (Dan) was accusing me of creating new accounts that were instabanned at RSC, Sirocco explained that I shouldn't have assumed it was me. Abbakus isn't just one person. The original owner of the persona Abbakus released it for use with Need For Speed 4 and 5, during the final months before EA shut down the online servers. EA had already shut down the creation of any new accounts, so a few spare game personas were dontated to the public via needforbetterspeed, and racerplanet forum sites, so that new players could play online for the last few months before the EAOR shutdown. Each of these had corresponding hotmail account (an EA requirement). The passwords for these EA and hotmail accounts were made public in these forums, and a lot of people have used them since then. Some of my friends still use abbakus, because it's very old and not associated with any one person any more. Like many members here, they use a false name and false email account. Note that I don't do this. I was at my friends place last Saturday, technically, into the early morning hours of Sunday (doing FPS games via LAN), and when taking breaks, I did webmail, forum, and newsgroups. I've occasionally made posts from his place, which could explain some header matches, but if you check my posts, you will see that almost all of them were made with my own ip's. In spite of what some are claiming, a person can't change their ip through Cox Cable, without doing something like replacing the cable modem (a different MAC) and even then you may end up getting the same ip, as the cable modem's software, including control, speed, and ip addressing are all downloaded by Cox Cable into a person's cable modem. If anyone here honestly thinks otherwise, then explain how it could be done. Whooo / Cliff, if the folks at RSC didn't know you, you probably would have been banned also for asking about their warning policy, and accused of being me or a co-conspirator. As it is, they closed your thread, and deleted the one made back in 2002 that you linked to. Anyway, I'm done with this thread. I didn't start it, and shouldn't have even got invovled. My friend apologied, but he did nothing wrong, either here or at RSC, and yet now I'm getting hassled for it.

> Oh and now it's funny, you "re-appear" here in this NG minutes before abbakus posted again. What a coincidence. It's a new technology called a phone. Friends use this to communicate with each other. I never claimed that I didn't know "abbakus", or that he wasn't a friend of mine or as RSC must think, an "advacate" to be banned as described by whooo / Cliff. All of his posts are still there at RSC; do you see any post he made that violated the rules of RSC?

Jeff: Making it worse?! How could it be worse?! "Banned from RSC, banned from RSC, banned from RSC" RAS: "Ooooh!..."

Interesting. 400 people share two IP addresses? Does that mean if 2 of those people are already online, the other 398 must wait their turn?

Easy, dynamic versus static IP addresses. Static IP addresses don't change and dynamic do. Also, people are able to change a MAC without changing any hardware. ;)

No, those are my two personal ip's from Cox. However, with a firewall, thousands of people appear to share a single ip. For example, 57.68.138.5, from SITA-Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques, a company in France. This is the firewall ip that we use at work. Every employee at my company and several other companies will appear to be using this same ip. With this type of setup, internal ip's of the form 10.xx.xx.xx are used, but all are mapped to the same external ip 57.68.138.5. Cox Cable offers a simlar firewall service, but it's mostly used for commercial sites, similar to my company.
Cox uses static ip addresses. At least they're supposed to be. Sometimes it changes, but normally I get the same ip every time I power on my system. Are you claiming that a person can change the MAC of a cable modem without changing any hardware? I'm not aware of any ethernet devices that let you change the MAC, as this would create a potential collision with another device. I have a Toshiba PCX2600, are you claiming there's a hack to change the MAC of this cable modem? If you replace the NIC or motherboard getting a new MAC there, it doesn't change your ip at Cox, since it's assigned by the software downloaded by Cox Cable into your cable modem. Your ip probably changes if you replace the cable modem, but this requires calling into Cox, giving them your new Cable Modem's MAC, so they can download the controlling software into it.

With Comcast, my dynamic IP doesn't normally change. The lease gets renewed every couple of days or so, at least I think that's how it goes... > > Are you claiming that a person can change the MAC of a cable modem > without changing any hardware? If you look at the headers for this message and an earlier one, my IP should be different now. > If you replace the NIC or motherboard getting a new MAC there, it > doesn't change your ip at Cox, since it's assigned by the software > downloaded by Cox Cable into your cable modem. >> If you replace the NIC or motherboard getting a new MAC there, it >> doesn't change your ip at Cox, since it's assigned by the software >> downloaded by Cox Cable into your cable modem. > > Have you actually tried anything to see if this is true or not? I use onboard ethernet controllers. I upgraded from a D850GBAL to a D875PBZ based system which obviously had a different MAC than the old system, and the ip remained the same. I upgraded cable modems (from 10mbs half duplex to 100mbs full duplex), and had to call into Cox Cable to tell then the new MAC before the new cable modem would work. I don't remember if the ip changed or not. I have two computers at home. Originally, I used a router, and the two computers shared a single ip. Cox supports up to 4 computers this way, all sharing the same ip (just like the firewall setup at my company). I then upgraded to having two ip's, one per computer (for old online games). I had to replace the router with switcher, and then have Cox enable the seperate ip service. You can up to 3 ip's on 3 computers max. When I made this change, the two new ip's were different than the old single ip. Regardless of how I plug into the computers, or which one is powered on first, each computer always seems to get the same ip. So maybe now it's following the motheborard's NIC MAC now. I don't know how to change the MAC, seems like this would be a bad idea since it would create a potential conflict between 2 ethernet devices. Still if there's a way, I'm curious.
> earlier one, my IP should be different now. > > Oops, there it changes again. :D I can do this too, but I do it the old fashion way, by going to a friends house (just down the street), or to work and posting from there. Look at my post at 3:07 pm today, I went to France and back to California in just a few hours. As I posted before, it's my company's ISP. That French company was one of the first internet providers and is pretty popular.
