Microsoft SideWinder FF Wheel under Windows 2000

A user asked whether the USB SideWinder Force Feedback Wheel works in Windows 2000. Experiences varied: the 4.0 software and later 4.5 driver worked for some, but the older 3.02 profiler could not be installed. One poster noted that installing Colin McRae Rally 2 overwrites a DLL and breaks the wheel in Windows 98.

Does the MS FF Wheel (USB) work OK in Windows 2000? I've seen posts saying it does and others saying it doesn't. Is it a drivers version issue? -- Steve
I have the game port version There are drivers within windows for it - works fine - but no profiler etc. Doug "Steve Loft" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:MPG.15b67378a035e69b9896a7@flyboat... > Does the MS FF Wheel (USB) work OK in Windows 2000? I've installed the profiler for the MSPP wheel under Win2000, I think it's the same software as the USB FF wheel. Works ok here. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spammers> "Douglas Ellison" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Ncj37.31483$[email hidden]... > Nope - it wont install. > Doug > > "Dave St.Onge" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:bk337.4034$[email hidden]... > > Can't use the profiler in win2k?? > > > > Dave > > > > "Douglas Ellison" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > > news:fOZ27.26907$[email hidden]... > > > I have the game port version > > > > > > There are drivers within windows for it - works fine - but no profiler > > etc. > > > Doug > > > > > > "Steve Loft" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > > > news:MPG.15b67378a035e69b9896a7@flyboat... > > > > Does the MS FF Wheel (USB) work OK in Windows 2000? When I first installed Win2K, the wheel wouldn't work at all. MS Support says Win2k drivers will not be developed. Then after a month of moaning about it, I fired up GPL and found that the wheel works, though it seems not a sensitive, and with a bigger dead zone than I recall. And the profiler doesn't work, so you can't assign the buttons. But you can use it... kind of. John Steve Loft wrote: > > Does the MS FF Wheel (USB) work OK in Windows 2000? USB version? It doesn't work with any games? That's odd. My MS FF (USB) seems to work with everything in Win2k... -Slash -- "Ebert Victorious" - The Onion
It's kind of weird. It works for some, doesn't for others. The biggest issue seems to be games that read the pedals correctly. There is a recent 4.5 update to the SideWinder core driver for the USB FFW. If you use Windows Update, and you have the wheel installed, it will present the update to you. I'm running Windows XP RC1, and I installed the 4.0 software. It gave it's usual compatibility complaint, but I installed it anyway. It _seems_ to be working ok! Interestingly, Windows XP changed the core driver to version 4.5 all by itself! Maybe there is hope afterall :) I still say MS needs to re-vamp it's entire SideWinder package as it's become horribly fragmented. There are several _different_ versions of 4.0 depending on what controller you use. -Larry "Steve Loft" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:MPG.15b67378a035e69b9896a7@flyboat... > Does the MS FF Wheel (USB) work OK in Windows 2000? You have version 4.0. They have version 3.02. There is NO way whatsovever to get 3.02 installed under Win2K. -Larry "Ian P" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9iks8l$mq3$[email hidden]...

I'm pretty sure the MSFF USB wheel uses version 4, the same as the MSPP USB does. The original poster was asking about the USB wheel. I know that the software version 3.02 won't work in Win2k because I have that with my gameport version. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spammers> "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:RTN47.160004$[email hidden]... > You have version 4.0. > > They have version 3.02. Ian P <[email hidden]> wrote: > I'm pretty sure the MSFF USB wheel uses version 4, the same as the MSPP USB > does. The original poster was asking about the USB wheel. I've got the USB wheel and v.4.0 and it's working beautifully. Even with the version 4 Microsoft won't guarantee compatibility with Win2K (IIRC) but it works fine for me. Didn't work in Win98, though, which was why I got the Win2K in the first place... - JjP

I couldn't make it to work, no matter what. I spent one entire evening (and a good part of the night) trying different combinations of software installation + plugging the wheel into the USB port, but the best I got was a wheel with no FF. I was about to low- level format my HDD anyway so I thought that was the perfect moment to install Win2K. - JjP

Did you have Colin Mcrae 2.0 installed by any chance? That game overwrites a dll that screws up the MS FF wheel and you have to restore the original file to fix it.

And BTW if this is a fact, I'm sure the guys at Microsoft would want to hear it. I have a friend who works at Microsoft Finland, and she described my problem to the technical guys at work, also explaining all the different approaches we took to make the wheel work. All they could say was that we'd gone through all the correct procedures, and if the wheel wasn't working, there was nothing that Microsoft could do about it. - JjP

Oh, it's a fact all right. I emailed Codemasters saying my wheel wouldn't work after installing CM 2.0 and the guy said he wasn't aware of such a problem with the game doing that. I posted here about it and someone posted the fix for me. It's a known problem, don't know about the demo compared to the full game, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the problem was. I beleive the file the game overwrites is the HID.dll in the "windows\system" folder.

I wonder if it's only MS Finland who don't know about this, I strongly suspect MS USA would have asked if I had CMR2 installed... I'll notify MS Finland so they'll know what to do when some other poor bastard tries to install MS FF USB on Win98 w/ CMR2. - JjP
