Gran Turismo 3 impressions and graphics debate

Olly Greenfield praised Gran Turismo 3's graphics as the best ever seen in a racing game. Others agreed it looked stunning and drove reasonably well, but criticised the lack of a cockpit or hood view, slow-car boost and no visible damage. The thread also covered PS2 i-Link multiplayer, Le Mans versions on different consoles and the PS2 as a DVD player.

Just got GT3, and it is graphically stunning. It has the finest racing game graphics that I have ever seen, on a PC, console, or even in the arcades. The only game on the PC that even comes close is Mobil 1 Rally running in hi rez with full scene antialiasing , and even that game lacks some of the graphical nuances of GT3, and this is a game running on a low rez TV screen, and it is still better in overall graphics presentation. The replays look about as good as the prerendered opening scenes in GT1 and GT2. If they could diminish the small amount of residual jaggies and shimmering, this game would be photorealistic. The car models are beautiful and virtually perfect in every detail, even up close they look like the real thing, the best models I have ever seen in a game. Reflections off of the cars look absolutely real, not faked or tricked up as in most other racing games. Things that I did not even realize were missing in other racing games become apparent in this game. For example, most games use very simple shadows, but this game has hard shadows, soft shadows, diffuse edges on shadows, darker shadows within shadows, reflections off of the car body illuminating parts of shadows. It sounds like a trivial graphical touch , but it is something that makes the visuals just a bit closer to reality. The shadowing and shading within tree branches and on other objects make them look 3D instead of like 2d background objects, adding all the more to the suspension of disbelief. Texture maps must be larger than in most racing games, because scenery objects and ground textures don't look like they have been tiled with repititious textures, as in many racing games. Reflections off of water on asphalt have the proper graininess of the asphalts bumpy texture, totally believable. There are so many graphical enhancements that it would be hard to describe them all. Suffice it to say that there is no other racing game that could fool the average person into thinking that they were watching a real race for as long as this game can. But lest you think that the beauty of this game was only skin deep eye candy, let me tell you that this game has a more than decent physics model. I have yet to receive my Force Feedback steering wheel, so I can only asess the physics using the Dual shock 2 controller analog joystick. Admittedly, driving with the joystick is a bit difficult when it comes to making precise inputs, but you start to adjust to it after running off the road a few times and weaving all over the place. After that adjustment period you begin to realize that the cars each feel distinctly different , and reasonably believable in their motion and behavior. I would estimate that the physics is a notch below GPL or Nascar heat, and a notch above SCGT. It definately is in the SIM camp, although there is an arcade mode in the game I have yet to try. The only substantial shortcomings I have found in the game so far, are the lack of dashboards on the interior car view( you just have a mirror and gauges), and an A.I. for the opponents cars that is only adequate (they seem to follow the same ideal racing line and dont make realistic mistakes), athough somewhat better than in past versions of the game. This is a Landmark Hall of Fame level videogame, regardless of platform or genre. It is a game worth spending the price of a good videocard on in order to get a PS2. This game and Madden 2001, make a PS2 worth the $300 I spent, you simply cannot get games like these two anywhere else at this point. This game makes me wonder what the XBOX could do with this level of programming and its superior graphical antialiasing and HDTV compatibility. Or what about a 2+ GHZ Pentium 4 and Geforce 4 if WSC takes full advantage of that graphics cards special abilities with shading and lighting effects. Check this game out if you want to get a hint at what the future of racing game graphics will be like.It is something special.
It's not gpl. Anyway, personally I couldn't give a monkeys if it looks like F1GP, as long as it feels nice to drive, is a challenge to drive and it has good mulitplayer then I'm 'very appy'. Gran Turismo games have always felt nice to drive. The physics are not spot on, but still very good indeed. Undoubtedly the biggest flaw of the game is the missing damage modeling (due to licensing terms). Apart from that the game is pretty much par with e.g. Viper Racing. I think most of the people out there critizing GT have only tried it with the dual shock controller. With eg. negCon it's definitely a very enjoyable racing game second only to GPL and Rally Championship. GT3 and PS2 are still very much on my shopping list. -Jari Please remove SPAMLESS before replying via email. the first two snips are just you. although a lack of in-car and hood views are die-hard annoying, they're not prerequisites for a sim-badge. I don't know if I would call it a must have if you don't already have a PS2, But since I was up most of night racing to earn points to buy parts for my Toyota I must say the game is very addicting indeed :) It is quite amazing graphically what they have managed to do at TV resolution. It is indeed almost photorealistic at times. My wife came home from work and asked me what race was on TV ! I had to explain to her it was a replay of my last race. Of coarse then she was pissed because I bought the game , LOL Anyhow if you have a PS2 get this game, It is most excellent :) PS: It does have the hooks in the software for the upcoming Sony I-net connection device for multiplayer whatever that turns out to be. During our annual pligrimage to Le Mans this year, I tested GT3 in a PS2 "booth".. And I cant say I was that impressed... Okey, I didnt get to tewak any settings etc. nor did I get the cahnce to test it for any period of time... but to me this *game* was noting more than a good looking - game. It was'nt stunning in any way like other titles I've seen before. GPL blew me away when I first saw that in all it's glory.. same with N4.. GT3... was... well... just O.K. ed_ Olly Greenfield <wrote: > Just got GT3, and it is graphically stunning. Unless it is a go-kart of course. This stupid "full screen" view with flying instruments looks too much as an arcade-game for you to feel like in a real car. With force feedback wheel, a real carchair, big monitor, surround sound, and then a flying instrument??? No way. Another posting said something about Viper Racing, which I think is a pretty good game, force feedback (allthough an old game), real "in-car" view, and fun to drive. It is NOT enough with some pretty graphics. Look at GPL, a real good racinggame, not the best looking, but one of the best to drive, and with the best ForceFeedback I have ever felt in a racing game. When fiddle around with the settings for FF in GPL (look at http://www.bhmotorsports.com/ for details), hold the car still on the track, turn the steeringwheel full to the left, and remove your hands from the wheel. Slowly add throttle, and as the car starts to move the steeringwheel centers if you have set the right chamber / caster on your frontwheels. THAT'S a simulator, although not as "modern" in graphics as many newer games. -- -- Mvh Sven

The next console capable of VGA (and higher) resolution is the XBox.

>>> Gran Turismo games have always felt nice to drive. >>but inferior second place to Sega's superb F355 for console racers. >Haven't tried that one, so can't really comment on it. Sega GT and MSR >were definitely horrible. "Data point" from another PC auto sim enthusiast: Rented a PS2 to play GT3. 2 days into it... Yes, the graphics are amazing. That's the big plus compared to GT and GT2. For the rest, it seems basically like GT and GT2 with the same pluses and minuses with a few improvements. For instance, I'd say they did improve the interface (but that's not make or break, is it?) Plus's: *Duh, the graphics *An interesting replay analyzer *maybe they've upgraded the rally racing, but that's never been my thing *Lots of cars compared to other games/sims, BUT (see minuses) Plus (returned from GT, missing in GT2) *Optional qualifying Same Minuses as GT/GT2 (in my order of importance): "Bungie" racing (Get behind, cars ahead slow. Get ahead, cars behind speed up). Not a *racing* sim until they allow you to defeat this. *Still less than sim-level AI *No cockpit graphics. *Only 5 cars to race against. *Crashing and bumper-cars are still good ways to win (but I think they made the crashing a more severe penalty this time). New Minuses: *Nowhere near as many cars as GT2. They also concentrated on race cars instead of everyday cars. Personal preference of course, but I liked GT/GT2 for being able to drive Astra's, old CRX's, old 'Ludes, etc. Here, I get 3 different versions of race Supras. *Got rid of the used car market (though it still has old Miata's, del Sol and Corolla RWD SR5) So, to me, the GT series scores on playability and I do consider it to be a *driving* sim. But it isn't a high fidelity *racing* sim. I consider buying the PSX for GT2 to be worthwhile. Not sure I consider the same for the PS2 and GT3 given the price (but the graphics are amazing :-). If you already have a PS2 and are reading this ng, you already have GT3, don't you :-) It's a no-brainer. On some other console titles: Bought a DC for F355. Superior to GT in all sim regards. But only a single car to drive (and race against). Big plus for real tracks. AI cheated and exhibited a bit of bungie-effect. Lacks the GT playability. Also bought Sega GT and MSR (Metropolis Street Racer). I agree with the previous poster: recommend a "no bid" on those two. Sega GT had horrble controllability issues (with the stock DC controller). While much better res than GT and GT2, the car models looked pretty fake. Also, the courses are poor. MSR is an arcade game plain and simple. Plus fairly unrealistic (though high res) cars. Only an arcade racer would think it was (a) difficult and (b) realistic. BTW, I also used "Bleemcast" to play GT2 on the DC. The graphics are very much improved adding life to the title. Alas, the controllability with the DC gamepad leaves a lot to be desired.

I had high hopes for Sega GT and I bought it and tried hard to like it for about a week, but I finally had to return it, it just sucked in so many ways even compared to ancient pixelated GT1. MSR was a nice arcadish racer , but not quite the sim/arcade racer that I had hoped for, so I just rented it and never bought it. F355 is excellent and very demanding at first, you will crash alot when you are pushing near the limit, about on the level of GPL but you crash more due to understeer than oversteer, as in GPL. F355's major shortcoming is the lack of a decent replay system, it just does a brief replay digest of hilights of the race. But I bought it, and it is as good as GT3 in terms of physics, if not better. "Jari Ketola" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9indti$nkc$[email hidden]...

Agreed, wish I return it. It is a GT ripoff, pure and simple. But, aside from higher res anti-aliased graphics, it appears worse in all facets. And even the graphics advantage isn't a slam-dunk as they use a standard (ugly) color pallet for each car and somehow all the cars come across looking like lumpy clay models.. >MSR was a nice arcadish racer , but >not quite the sim/arcade racer that I had hoped for, so I just rented it and >never bought it. Ditto, but again, bought and wish I hadn't. Again, the cars just don't look real. Nevermind the physics. And the gameplay is boringly repetitive and only difficult due to how the AI racers cheat (accelerate to hyper velocities when behind). Last, the hyped "features" of the game (real-time clock and "radio station" music) are of no interest to this sim-player. >F355 is excellent and very demanding at first, you will >crash alot when you are pushing near the limit, about on the level of GPL >but you crash more due to understeer than oversteer, as in GPL. Also, the high friction coefficient when you rub the wall is annoying. >F355's major >shortcoming is the lack of a decent replay system, it just does a brief >replay digest of hilights of the race. To me, the greatest shortcomings are the usual ones on console racers: too limited field of cars & AI that isn't up to PC standards. This one is also limited by the one car nature and limited number of tracks (but what a car and very nice tracks!). >But I bought it, and it is as good as GT3 in terms of physics, if not better. I've tried every version there is. The DC version was very good. The PC version and the PSX version were done by different developers, I believe, and it shows. The GameBoy version was nice, but it was hard as hell. The PS2 version which is due out by the end of July should blow them all away. It is being done by the same team as the DC version, and there are many improvements. -- Stuff You Gotta Have software for BeOS and PalmOS http://www.stuffyougottahave.com/

[BTW, how does one add an attribution line to the crappy AOL newsreader??] I thought about it, but is it really *that* much better than the PC version which I opted to pass on? I've heard it is, but enough to warrant purchasing? I don't mean this as an aspersion, but I suspect that there is a tendency to "settle" for lesser games on the console simply because there are less quality sim titles there. For instance, I would *never* have considered purchasing MSR if it was a PC title. The only even half-similar game I have purchased was NFS:PU (which I did enjoy, and no I really don't mean to lower it to MSR standards).

>I disliked MSR, as well. It was too damned dark at times and the >'Kudos' thing never worked for me. The "watch it's" at least kept me from driving the hell-bent crash into the wall and each other in GT/GT2. But that was about all it had going for it. I wanted to play it long enough to get the Speedster (I work with Opel guys, have driven an Elise, but haven't managed a TD in a Speedster yet). But I wasn't going to put up with the game any longer [re: TD Lemans] >Other -excellent- racers on DC are F355 and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2. >Now, go buy each of them! >Now! >:) Hmmm, what do you really think? F355 is why I bought the DC. Hmmm, Tokyo eh? Okay, well, when TD Lemans hits the bargain bins (not too long given the DC's future), I'll get it. Here's a recommendation for you (though I'd bet you've acted on it): Bleemcast. Really breathes new life into GT2. Alas, the DC controller is nowhere near as good as the little Interact Racer hand-wheel I got for the PSX.

If I wanted to go sightseeing, I'd hop in my car. If I want to drive fast and do so safely, I'll take a simulator with an accurate physics model and okay graphics. GPL is the sim of choice (the graphics are actually outstanding and the FPS is more than adequate... even on starts)

The DVD player is an average unit. It has no special features and no great strengths. It does play DVD's well enough however. If you are building a Home Theatre type system, then it is greatly lacking. If, however, you merely wish to view rented DVD's much like a rented VCR tape, then it works just fine. dave henrie

Yes, it does have on screen controls. When the official Sony remote comes out in Sept., there will be new drivers that should add more features. -- Stuff You Gotta Have software for BeOS and PalmOS http://www.stuffyougottahave.com/
I have a PS2 and the DVD is average and a pain in the ass to use. The remote I bought sucked, the on screen controls are ok, but not so user friendly. Also it has a loud fan and would have some problems playing DVDs. I rang Sony and they advised me to go in change a setting relating to the speed it plays them.. I had to do this every time I played a DVD! I have since bought a seperate DVD which is much much better. Rob "Galley_SimRacer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

PS2's DVD bit rate is very average, so it struggles a little. You pay for what you get, I say. It's about as good as a mid-range DVD player, which now is about US $200. But it's not bad, not bad at all if you consider it's also a console. The only important features missing are picture control and Colorstream composite components (I have a Toshiba 65H80). Hopefully you are at least using an S-Video cable to enhance your picture quality. Some people will of course nitpick that it's not region free or it doesn't have stuff like zooming, multiple FF speeds (I love my 30x FF!), no backward slomo, no progressive scan (480p would be quite a impressive on the PS2 if the TV supports it), no frame-per-frame, doesn't play all the format (VCD, SVCD, etc.. but that's just home theater geeks ;-) But hey, stuff like the PS2 is bringing the DVD to the mass, which is not a bad thing. I use it because it's my only DVD player, but it is feature-short and not very user friendly.

I believe you can also hook up a 7th set for spectators to view the action. -- Stuff You Gotta Have software for BeOS and PalmOS http://www.stuffyougottahave.com/

What's REALLY cool is if you link 6 PS2's and 6 TV's it will multiplex the video out to all 6 TV's to create one giant TV (like those video walls). I doubt anyone other than an appliance story would be able to do this. I'd love to see it at Best Buy but they would never take 6 PS2's out of the box. -------------------- Sinjin www.SinjinSolves.com Your Guide to Success
