I have an AMD 1000mhz and Asus a7v m\b with 128 meg of 150 kingmax ram, and
an Asus v7700 video card (geforce 2-gts-32) It seems to lock up everytime
when in multiplayer mode and racing at the Alps, right when I reach the
snowy part. Random lockups any other time, (1 in 10) I am using all the
latest updates and patches. DX8 too. Has anybody had this problem? thanks in
advance for any help...
since it is reproduceable, I would say there is a configuration problem.
THis could be a long drawn-out solution. But you will have to dig into your
system settings and make sure your vid and sound cards are not sharing
IRQ's. (do you have an SBlive?) Try turning off various options one by
one...first the hardware accelerated sound. Then even try removing the
soundcard completely from your system. These are extreme steps that one
shouldn't have to do, but sometimes a system just gets scrambled.
btw...how long have you had this version of windows and have you ever
re-installed it?

I still have a lock up every now and then, mostly when I have a collision,
so i'm wondering if it is related to FF
I use a LWFF
WIN 98SE
GF2 GTS (12.41)
It happens some of the time, not all......

the best way is to remove it from your device manager, then shut down your
system, remove the card. place it in another slot as far away from your
vid card as possible and then reboot and re-install the sound card drivers.
good luck

No, don't move it "as far away as possible." Every mobo/BIOS is different,
I found. I used to think the PCI slot next to the AGP slot always shared
the same IRQ--not neccessarily true. Check the mobo's docu. If you've lost
it, you can always check the DOS splash screens early in the boot
process--one of them will tell you which piece of h/w (video cards, snd
cards, HDs, etc.) has which IRQ. Just keep moving the sound card around
until it has its own IRQ. SBL!s, particularly, like to have their own IRQ
or they'll misbehave. When you get lockups during a collision or where the
pic freezes but the sound keeps on going (sometimes looping), that's almost
always a sound card problem. Come snd cards can never be made to work
(ESL--?--comes to mind). Make sure you have the latest drivers. In the
case of the SBL!, I *only* install the drivers, never all those bizarre apps
it comes with (to turn yer kybd. into a guitar, etc.), 'cuz they cause no
end of trubble, confusion, & conflicts.

I don't have 98 running at the moment, but can't you go into the device
manager and assign the sound card another IRQ?
Andrew,
I believe that's best done from the BIOS...but it's far less, erm, sporty
doing it by just moving cards around. If you disco the PCI steering (or
whatever it's called) you've opened a can of worms that I, for one, don't
wanna deal with. Moving cards around ain't rocket science; by comparison,
messing with the BIOS, Device Manager, or--God forbid!--the Registry is a
black art.

Most cards won't allow you to change the IRQ in device manager,
unfortunately.
