Is anyone planning on getting the XBOX ???

Will sim racers buy an Xbox?

Olly Greenfield asked whether anyone planned to buy Microsoft's Xbox. Posters debated whether its fixed GeForce 3-class hardware could host serious sims, noting World Sports Cars was announced for it, while Simon Brown argued that consoles had never had serious simulations. Practical issues such as using a wheel with a TV were also discussed.

I was wondering if anybody in this group is intending to buy the XBOX ? I think I am going to pass on the Gamecube, but the XBOX sounds very promising. As good as GT3 looks on the PS2, I cannot wait to see what a good racing game on the XBOX's Geforce 3 graphics system will look like. Also, I have heard that it will support HDTV resolutions, and many games will have digital dolby 5.1 support, done on the fly in realtime. Plus the harddrive for gaming addons or "patches". Forcefeedback wheels. Sounds like interesting times ahead. I guess I will have to upgrade my TV and stereo systems.

Probably. However the x-box wont arrive until next year here. But it would be fun to have something to hook up to my 32" 5.1 home theatre. -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying

World Sports Cars ? Although I think racing games still will suit the PC best, with all the addons/hacks/mods and so on. -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying

Agreed. I actually considered a PSX a couple of years ago, just so my and some mates could play soccer games when drinking. (ouch busted too... :) -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying

It's not the X-Box that will convince me to buy and X-Box, rather the games. So far, I don't see anything that has aroused my interest. I'm taking a wait and see attitude on this one. Certainly won't be camped out at Wal Mart like I was the day the PS2 launched! And that wasn't worth it, it wasn't until two months ago that I began to see a few worthwhile games come the PS2's way. Of course the learning curve shouldn't be as much of an obstacle where the X-Box is concerned. John Cauthen Sport Planet

There was a magazine that had a comparision of nascar heat for the ps2 and also Xbox. The added detail in the track surface, fencing, etc was very noticiable. Plus the AA was clearly better. Xbox graphically at least, will be a superior console, but the first reviews of release titles for the unit seem lackluster. dave henrie > > hmmm.... are any "promising" racing titles confirmed for the XBox? > can't think of any myself. >
Don't think I'll be getting one. The X-Box will be a P3-700 / GF3. Of course, it will perform better than a P3-700 / GF3 PC, but I doubt it'll be enough better to make it worth buying. My CPU is already 40% faster than a P3-700. The GF3 is pretty much the same speed as my GF2, plus by the time the X-Box is released, I will most likely already have a GF3. The extra 30% speed increase they can get by having specially designed components, will be eaten up very quickly as PCs continue to get faster. If you didn't have or couldn't afford a top-of-the-range PC, then the arguments for getting an X-Box or a PS2 are extremely strong, but if you are committed to PC ownership and prefer PC-type games, there's little to gain by getting an X-Box. A few of the obvious weaknesses of the X-Box - not upgradeable, limited storage space, low tv resolutions, the discomfort of playing in front of a TV instead of at a desk, games aimed at children, limited memory etc. The list of things you can do on a PC which will never be possible on the X-Box is endless - you can use 3DS Max to create your own models, animations and films, use a massive variety of programming language to create your own applications, use DirectX and OpenGL to make your own multimedia applications, demos or even games, run your business with MS Office, design, create and maintain your own website, manage an e-business, race 1967 F1 cars, record samples and create your own digital music, play System Shock 2 etc. Also DirectSound3D is only one speaker short of dolby digital. Hmm, so for $300 I get a box with a DVD player and remote, a GF3 and games that are ALL designed to use it, games that I can truly plug and play without having to jump on-line and check for patches first, all that and WSC too? Your CPU may be 40% faster, but is the game you're playing written for your CPU? The benefit of the Xbox is that it's a fixed system. A developer can take advantage of the entire system. They don't need to target their game for Mr and Mrs Smith of Green Bay who only have a 300mhz Celeron with an ATI Rage.
Well written games take advantage of whatever hardware is present. You may have a TV that can do 1920x1080 but most people don't. And to get a TV that can do that res would cost more than a top PC. A normal tv can do 800*600. DirectSound3D is 4-speaker. Dolby Digital is 5. Not upgradeable is not a strength. Having a guaranteed feature set is great for developers, until the hardware becomes outdated. CPU's double in speed every 18 months, video card every 12 months. Any hardware in the X-Box will soon be out of date. Also, having a guaranteed feature set is an advantage, but it's not really that difficult to write program that benefit from whatever hardware is in a PC. The games on PS1, PS2, N64 and Dreamcast are definitely not aimed at 25+ so why should X-Box be any different? You think anyone would ever make a game like GPL on the X-Box? Playing on a couch is not comfortable if you want to use an FF steering wheel with pedals. I haven't heard Papy planning to port Nascar 4 to the X-Box. That depth of simulation will never be seen on the X-Box. Where are the serious simulations on the PS1 / PS2 / N64 / Dreamcast? There are none. Over time developers will learn to squeeze more out of the X-Box for sure, but at the same time, PCs will be getting genuinely faster. Ok, I meant 20+. PC games aimed at 20+ audience - GPL, Nascar 4, System Shock2, Thief, Thief 2, Flight Sim 2000, MS Train Simulator, Sim City Series (and all the 50 clones made by other people), Every serious flight simulator ever made, Shogun, Emperor:Battle for Dune, Age of Empires 2. N4 and GPL are both serious motor racing simulations on the PC. It's nothing to do with the hardware, X-Box could run N4 fine, but you can't argue with history. No sims on the PS1, none on the PS2, none on the Dreamcast, none on the N64. These same developers will be writing the X-Box games. "Olav K. The same developers who failed to write any serious simulations for the PS1, PS2, Dreamcast and N64 will be making the X-Box games. You have to be kidding if you think F355 Challenge is even in the same league as GPL or N4. I have F355 Challenge, the AI is poor, the collision detection and response is really poor and it's very difficult to make the cars spin, even with all the driving aids off. I was winning races within 4 hours play on F355 Challenge. That's the sort of 'Challenge' it offers. I agree for lots of people the X-Box will be an excellent purchase (I never said otherwise), but as I said, if you are *already committed to PC ownership* (meaning you need to have a fast PC but not for games), then given that most X-Box titles will also appear on the PC, what's the point? Both will use the same basic operating system, both will have pc video subsystem, the port time to move a title from the xbox to a pc would be much less than taking a PS2 title and porting it to a pc. dave henrie "Gunnar Horrigmo" <

I read somewhere that there will be different modules available for the XBox that provide any kind of A/V hookup imaginable. So you don't move your TV at all, when you want to play at your desk you just plug in an SVGA module and hook it up to a computer monitor. "Bill and Ben, the flower pot men." <bill&[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > You move your TV to the desk or put the desk in front of the TV? > Either way sounds like a pain.
Whether they are representative is irrelevant, they are available. F355 Challenge is not representative of console racing games either. Unless Papy start porting to X-Box, I doubt that quality of sim will be seen, apart from maybe WSC if that makes it to the X-Box. As for X-Box titles appearing on PC, obviously 'most' was an exaggeration, but the PC and X-Box are extremely similar since the X-Box is using Windows, DirectX 8.1 and a GF3. Joint releases would make economic sense, and ports will be easier than ever. I think it's fairly likely that major X-Box titles and anything that sells well will also be seen on the PC. PC titles appearing on X-Box isn't necessarily as likely though. MS have said the HDD in the X-Box is only to be used for config files and saves, and that games shouldn't use more than 50MB. What's that going to mean for loading times on the X-Box for a PC game that installs 1.5 GB like Diablo 2? A fairly average PC game installs 600 MB now, loading that data from a CD instead of a HDD isn't going to be much fun. Anyway, that's not the point I was making. All I was saying is that if you've already invested in and need a fast PC, unless you've got more money than sense there doesn't seem to be any great reason to get an X-Box. I bought a Dreamcast and some of the top games for it, and I never use it now. The games have less depth when compared to the top PC titles. And this will help how? You still have the same problem of having the TV in a viewable area. Consider most people have their TVs away from the computer desk, it still won't work. You'd have your body facing the desk(to steer and work the pedals), but your head would be turned to look at the game on the TV. That doesn't sound very comfortable to me...
