WSC development update and DirectX 8 requirement

Eric Cote of SimRacingMag posted an article on the state of World Sports Cars development agreed with Chris West. He confirmed WSC would use DirectX 8 exclusively with W-buffering, so Glide would not be supported, though Voodoo cards could still run it through Direct3D. Readers asked about a demo, which Cote said was up to publisher Empire.

My Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 uses the Kyro II chipset, and yes, it does have W-Buffering. Go under Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display, click on the settings tab, click advanded, go to 3D performance, and there you are. Nick Eric Cote wrote:

nope Krakus, since WSC is using exclusively DX8 stuff... OpenGL doesn't have W-Buffers, no go.. Glide is not DX8 : no go Krakus wrote: > Will they still keep the Glide rasterizer as an available option for the > users that *do* have Voodoo cards?

you will still be able to use your Voodoo card via D3d, just not in glide. FWIW....D3D in GPL is every bit as fast on my system as Glide. My V5 also runs n4 in D3d..although at about 10-20 fps less than a Geforce with TnL turned on. dave henrie "Krakus" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3lJ57.506971$[email hidden]... > Will they still keep the Glide rasterizer as an available option for the > users that *do* have Voodoo cards? > >
agree Dave, only poor old V2 won't do it.. in any case, it's way too slow for the task Dave Henrie wrote:

I should have also pointed out that while the Voodoo cards can run d3d, many of the features available via DX8 won't be possible with a Voodoo. And because some of these features most likely improve frame rate....you may see markedly slower fps with a Voodoo. Of course some of the newer Dx8 features are frame rate killers so you may even out in the long run. dh

it is probably just a matter of adjusting your d3d color properties in the settings. Try going to the 3dfx color tab in the advanced button of the video settings(whew!) then clik the d3d button and move the sliders left or right to adjust your color settings(saturation?) My d3d settings are at 1.30 and seem just fine. I have all three sliders locked to the same level. give it a try...doesn't look washed out on my system.. fwiw...when the first 3dfx patch came out for n2 waaaay back in the dark ages...everyone said the 3dfx colors were washed out compared to the Rendition settings... the more things change the more the stay the same. dave henrie "Robin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:u2L57.1$%[email hidden]... > > "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:tXJ57.379363$[email hidden]... > > you will still be able to use your Voodoo card via D3d, just not in > glide. > > FWIW....D3D in GPL is every bit as fast on my system as Glide. Adjust your D3D gamma settings under desktop properties.
Is this an exclusive then, WSC is now DX8 only? I personally agree with that decision as it will reduce the remaining developement time, but it may dissapoint the 3dfx brigade [all 3 of them ;) ]. Using W-Buffering is also a very good idea, since 16-bit z-buffers are not up to the job for a game which will clearly need a close near clip plane (for the virtual cockpits). I'll give it a try. I must admit though that I think N4 looks okay using D3D but then again I don't have Glide to compare it to. I'll try your suggested settings and play around with it a bit more and cross reference how GPL looks with changes to how N4 looks compared to present settings. Regards, Robin

Hi Simon, actually it's not something new (DX8) from my part, I've already talked about this in November in 2000. You can see the article I did on the subject there : http://www.simracingmag.com/wsc/articles/00q4/wsc_interview_1.shtml It also speak about SSE2 instuction enhanced. Last note, I got an entire section devoted to WSC there : http://www.simracingmag.com/wsc/articles/wsc_articles.shtml Interestingly, it's been exactly 1 year I started to make articles with the West Bros Cheers Eric Simon Brown wrote:
