Hi my fellow r.a.s.ers. After a few weeks away from GPL (due to a house move and no desk/table to drive from!), I've decided to cheer myself with an upgrade, specifically for GPL. I'm going from a Celeron 433 with a Voodoo 3 2000, 128Mb RAM, Soundblaster live! value and a nasty 10Gb Fujitsu HD to: Athlon 1.2 266FSB Abit KT7A-RAID IBM Deskstar 60GXP 41.2GB AOpen CD-RW 32r 12w 10rw A decent but not pricey case with decent cooling and a 350W PSU Or at least, that's what I plan. Now then, what graphics card? Yeah I know this is always being asked here, and there are lots of reviews elsewhere on the 'net, but how many specific to GPL/my chosen system? Given that almost all of my old PC will be replaced (all I'll keep is monitor, soundcard, network card and keyboard/mouse), I'm confident I'll be able to sell what's left for something and therefore afford something decent. The obvious choice, I feel, is to go for it and get myself a Geforce 3 (www.dabs.com currently have a Gladiac 920 for 303), but my question is; do I reallly need one? I obviously don't want a 'bottleneck' so other choices are a GTS2 or Ultra? How do Radeons fare with GPL? I'm clutching at straws here. Basically, I want the luxury of having fancy cockpits and 3D wheels without having to compromise fps too much. Is the Geforce3 the only way to go? Or are they still overpriced?
n Tom Pabst might be able to give you some insight into the GF3 but if GPL is your focus, then a Geforce 2 PRO would suit your system. The Ultra only makes gains on the pro when you hit the very high resolutions. Radeon's and Kyro II's are also workable but you won't get the benefit of the hardware Tnl that is available if you look at the Kyro. Heck if you insist on building your system to please ONLY GPL then round up a Voodoo 5 5500. But you really should consider what is in the pipeline. WSC 'could' be out this year and it will definately need a stout cpu AND vid card. THanks to the last few patches released by Papyrus, you can rest assured a D3D burner video card like either of the Geforces will continue to work well with GPL. N4, WSC will benefit if you get a card that supports hardware tnl and so far, only the Radeon and Nvidias do that. dave henrie "Craig Jones" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:YQh77.2591$[email hidden]... > Hi my fellow r.a.s.ers. IMHO, GPL does not seem ioverly sensitive to the power of the graphics card unless you want to run in insanely high resolutions or must have FSAA. I find that it runs just fine, with the latest tracks, cockpits and wheels on my Duron 800@933 with a somewhat aging 32MB TNT2 Pro card. This is at 1024x768, using the latest D3D patch. If you want FSAA, then the Voodoo5 (if all you are interested in is GPL) of the GeForce3 are the way to go. Ian -- Ian Riches GPL Rank +2.36 Monsters of GPL +296.54
I have to agree with Dave... a 64mb GF2 PRO would do the job very nicely... (N4 is like a dream!) GF3's are still overpriced like hell and the're realy not that big differrent in FPS from what I can tell. I got a MSI Starforce 831 card myself... it was one of the cheapest I could find at that moments.. (cost me around 150) ed_
'Tis said that WSC will be built for the GF3. Until then, existing driving sims run faster & cheaper with the GF2 (Pro or Ultra). The Voodoo 5500 is still the card of choice for GPL. --Steve Smith "Craig Jones" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:YQh77.2591$[email hidden]... > Hi my fellow r.a.s.ers. Agreed, GPL is very CPU power hungry more than graphics card. I'm running a Tbird [email hidden] with a V3 3000, o'clocked to 200mhz. Awesome speed, I run with full cars, 1280x1024 with no slowdowns, except occasionally at Monaco. If you want to run 1600x1200, go for a geforce 2 gts or the like. GF3's are way too pricey. Just wait a couple of months and the price will be half. Rafe Mc

BTW, I used to have a celeron 400 oc'ed to 600 with the same V3 3000. I was only really able to run 800x600 before with no slowdowns. Shows how big a difference the CPU makes. But I definitely need more video power to get higher res. Rafe Mc On Wed, 25 Jul 2001 14:19:02 GMT, [email hidden] (Rafe McAuliffe) wrote:
