Fears that Fox will turn Speedvision into NASCAR TV

Dave Henrie noted that Fox's Totally NASCAR show was coming to Speedvision and feared it signalled the end of its diverse international coverage. Others agreed and praised documentaries and sports car coverage, while Scott Johnson argued NASCAR programming could keep the channel profitable.

Mark your calendars. August 6th the Fox program Totally Nascar, a daily recap of Nascar news, comes to Speedvision. This most likely will be first step in the takeover of SV. I wonder how much Euro racing we will see this time next year? dave henrie
I saw the ads for that tonight, too. Bummer. :-( Did you see the Silver Arrows special the other night (the "History of Audi" documentary)? GREAT show!!! Things like that will be missed. -- JB On Sat, 28 Jul 2001 01:30:25 GMT, "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Yeah, I'll miss all that crap too, the ALMS coverage, since it conflicts with the Nascar partner SCCA Grand AM, will be gone, The sedan coverage, even though this year there was precious little, can't have folks seeing V8 Aussie cars and wonder why the Winston Cup rigs look heavy. 24hours of Le Mans...Are you kidding me..it comes right in the middle of the Winston....Cart News Coverage?--In a program called 'Totally Nascar'? Rallye? Yeah SV has a lot of filler crap, but that ain't the stuff that will be going bye-bye...I hope you get to like Bill Dye's BassMasters Fishing Tourneys...You'll be seeing alot more of that than Non-Nascar event coverage. dave henrie (print this up...save it...look at it in a year,, then come back and tell me what got tossed, fishin or racing? dh
Don't get me wrong....I like Nascar....But I also like other forms of racing as well. I just don't see how a channel focusing on one aspect of racing can serve my interests. dave henrie "Shaun Robinson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:> I'm not a boat restoring kinda person but i rather watch that than > nascar. Whom do you suppose owns DIS? Hopefully this means we won't have to wait 6 weeks til the AMA race is telecast, like this year, but still it is just another offshoot of the Giant Umbrella called Nascar. Grand Am and the Rolex 24 hours most likely will survive...but other Euro series will most likely disappear. dave(black day)henrie >http://www.speedvision.com/pub/articles/motorcycles/ama_superbike/010708d.ht ml > > On Sat, 28 Jul 2001 01:30:25 GMT, "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> > wrote: > > > Mark your calendars. You're taking the narrow view, Scott -- how many boating enthusiasts would rather see more NASCAR programming on Speedvision, as opposed to historic documentaries on the history of Audi -- all in the name of ensuring that Speedvision will be able to continue carrying boat restoration shows? The arrival of NASCAR programming means we won't be seeing things like boat restoration, historic racing documentaries (other than NASCAR), rally racing, F1 coverage, airshow coverage, etc. -- ALL of which have helped make Speedvision what it is. And all of which will have NOTHING to do with a "NASCAR Channel" -- or no place there, either. Wake up and smell the coffee -- NASCAR means the death of Speedvision as we know it. It's not a "for better or worse" situation -- it's DEFINITELY going to get worse. :-( -- JB

Unfortunately, I believe you're 100% correct on this one, Dave. :-( -- JB
Read it, and then read between the lines: "Speedvision's coverage is a win-win for the sport," said Speedway President John Graham. Meaning, Speedvision is a win-win for ANYTHING that has any remote tie-in with NASCAR. Do you think they would air the Superbike championship during NASCAR's Speedweeks if the Superbike event was at Lime Rock? This benefits NASCAR, plain and simple -- it has nothing to do with providing good coverage of motorsports. Hollow rhetoric. We'll see no more Speedvision Cup, and no more American LeMans, either -- not with NASCAR's own Grand Am series needing coverage. :-/ -- JB On Sat, 28 Jul 2001 21:24:19 GMT, [email hidden] wrote:

Quality vs. quantity. I don't consider Speedvision's lineup to be of bad quality. Some shows are questionnable, for sure it's not a perfect lineup, but another time a big reason of SV's popularity is the lack of NASCAR. > I won't be shedding tears for the loss of boat restoration shows. Most of the people appreciate the "STOCK CAR" coverage on Speedvision. It's different then the "NASCAR" coverage. For me the beauty of speedvision is the diversity and sheer quality of information. Legends: you know, an hour long show on Nouvalari (sp?) or a single season of MG racing in the 50s. One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my life was a show in which Alain DeCadenet (sp?) drove all the great Porsches. I almost cried when they fired up the 908. (904? The little black thing.) Or how about when Alain D. did the same thing with Ferrari? Hanging out on the lawn at Goodwood. In car with Moss at Laguna. That viewing of Le Mans, the movie, this year.... with the interviews of the film makers... Phenomenal! With nascarvision we can pretty much forget about the Dakar coverage. For me the sign will be when DeCadenet goes. Once they can him you know they are serious about driving the final stake through the heart of racing in America. "Get it off TV then they won't bicker when we make right turns illegal in the WKA and IKF." Them nascar hick fucksticks can't stand to see a talented driver go. Just ruins their day. ...and don't even get 'em started on a proper racing car... nothing should weigh 1000 pounds. A real shame the format is changing. :-(
> I won't be shedding tears for the loss of boat restoration shows. Somebody over in alt.recreation.boating probably is, I bet. My wife once commented on the amount of non-auto programming and all I could say is that it IS "SPEEDvision" after all, and no doubt there are boating and aviation enthusiasts out there who'll miss that stuff as much as I'll miss the live F1 and Le Mans broadcasts. We niche groups have to stick together. :-)

...and it is in the decisions Fox will make about what is "crap" and what is not that I am most worried. Tim

Mark- This thread is pretty dark, and I felt the same way when I first saw the new ad for Totally NASCAR. (An ominous title if ever there was one!) The above riff was well stated. The DeCadenet specials Victory By Design of both Porche and Ferrari were wonderful, and moved me to send an email to Speedvision, to which I got a detailed reply from them thanking me for the input and saying my message was being forwarded to the producers. I really like SV because they care about all forms of racing, and we the fans. Hope it stays that way. Hobbs and DeCadenet do the bulk of the work of the vintage racing programs. Their exit would definitely mean the end of Speedvisin as we have known it, but let's hope that never happens. Tim

I have read most of the replies to this topic and, like you guys I fear the worst. I am watching the speedvision touring car and gt challenge as I write this it would be a shame to lose such gtreat racing as this.
Today I saw Mitsubishi rally preparation and testing and outdoor trials on motorbikes. Didn't even plan on watching TV today. Just caught my eye. -- "Racing! - Science for the action minded." mark "RoAdRaCeRv6" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I have read most of the replies to this topic and, like you guys I fear the > worst.
