I have some questions regarding the what hardware will
produce good results on SCGT.
I'm currently running SCGT on the following platform:
Duron 600mhz CPU
64mb PC100 RAM
Voodoo3 3000 AGP videocard
I set ther resolution at 640x480 with track detail,
vehicle detail, and texture quality all on the high
setting.
I'm experiencing good framerate, except in the
beginning of the races when there are numerous cars on
the screen at once. (I race with the number of
opponents on the medium setting.) Given my system's
specs, is it normal for me to experience these
rame-rate problems at the beginning of the race? Are
there any settings under Windows or elsewhere that I
could change to boost my performance?
Also, I'm considering upgrading my system's memory to
either 128mb or 256mb or PC133 RAM. Is this likely to
help my frame rate performance when there are bunch of
cars on the screen at once?
Lastly, I'm noticing a lot of jaggies on my screen.
The white lines that appear on the outer edges of the
road are especially jaggy. I'm thinking of upgrading
my video card. Would the Voodoo5 5500 be a good
choice? While I'm aware that 3dfx went under and that
the Voodoo is a dead platform, I understand that SCGT
is optimized for 3dfx. Furthermore, I'm not playing
the most advanced games anyway. Does the
anti-aliasing technology on the Voodoo5 5500 get rid
of the jaggies on SCGT?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Yes SCGT and the F12k cousins of scgt are all framerate hogs. CPU upgrade
over 1ghz is recomended.
Changing windows settings will make very little difference. You can try
different drivers for your V3 and see if that helps. voodoosource.net has a
good tweek guide, intended for a V5 but it should apply to the V3 as well.

I don't think so. More cpu and better vid card are the solutions.
Ooolala...THe V5 makes SCGT beautiful. But with your cpu(hint, hint) the
FSAA that smooths up the screen would make a big impact on framerate.

Celeron 300@450 and a voodoo 3 at 1024*768
It also ran fine on my brother's k6-2 450 with voodoo 3.
I would agree that F12k is a big CPU hog

Hi,
I used to have a Voodoo 3 before, and from what I remember, using Glide
seemed to have made the available texture memory smaller than it
actually was. If you try to use Direct3D instead, you might find an
improvement.
Also, the mirror frame tends to be a framerate hog as well for whatever
reason. Try using the simple mirror instead.

The biggest impact SCGT has is around the pits. Everytime you come around,
you will see the fps start to nose-dive. Racing at Road Atlanta with a full
field can be paticularly agravating.
I stand by my golden rule of upgrades.
CPU First-as much as you can afford
Vid card (not always bleeding edge, but close)
Memory(more and & faster)
Subsytems-newer hardrives, sound cards etc.

The 1/2 size mirror fix is still available at www.theuspits.com. It
didn't really help me that much, but OTOH I am not using a Voodoo card.
Barring hardware upgrades, the biggest improvements come from cutting
down the detail level on the cars and the track. Cutting detail from
"max" to "high" improved my frame rates by a good 4 - 8 fps or so. This
is on a 1 ghz Celeron with a 32 meg Radeon.

Hal

It runs no better on my 1.2Ghz Athlon DDR/GeForce Pro than it did on my
Athlon 800/GeForce DDR.
I was really disappointed in that :(

I agree. I don't see a need for the CPU to be over 1GHz -- I don't
notice any issues on my PC with 16 or 24 cars:
866MHz Pentium III
256Mb RAM
ATI All-in-Wonder
Your 64Mb RAM looks kinda light to me, but I don't know how much that
would affect SCGT, per se.

How can you tell what your framerate is?
Marty
I don't think SCGT is frame limited I use FRAPS to tell me what's going on
and I get over 100 on SCGT.

In SCGT with latest kit over 100 is possible at the start within the
menus...once any racing starts,it drops dramatically...depending on your
settings sometimes as low as 15fps with all on max and fsaa x4,with a full
start grid and dash view.
That is with the latest fastest gear...!
So unless you have a miracle cure to the well known problems of EA and
fps...back up your claims with in race screenies of your fps...not the menu
screens..!

P4,
GF3, PC800 all adds up to one hell of a PC. OK so it doesn't quite make the
three digits, I exagerated to prove a point. My point being that SCGT is not
frame limited as the first person here stated. 60+ fps is easily acheivable
with SCGT after which point who cares if it's frame limited anyway, if the
PS2 is happy at 60fps then so am I.
