Hi,
I noticed that if I do not reboot Windows before running N4, I get 1/3 lower
frame rates (measured repeatedly in controlled tests). The same items are
running in the background at reboot and later. The system has 384 MB of RAM
and tons of disk space, so it is not a swapping issue. The motherboard AGP
setting has no effect on frame rates whatsoever (Abit KT7a RAID and GeForce2
GTS 32MB).
I suppose I will have to spend more time trying to run various programs one
at a time to see which one is affecting N4 (or if it is N4 itself!!)...but
if any of you have any ideas...
Thanks,
Marc

Your mouse has moved. Windows must be restarted for the change
to take effect. Reboot now?

Interesting....it is not an application causing the problem, but the process
of the Win98SE power saving on the monitor (I presume; I can't imagine the
hard disk has anything to do with this since it is reawakened and working
fine when the problem occurs).
Perhaps the v-synch or something like that is being messed up when the
monitor is shut off or turned back on by Windows? I don't use a screen
saver, so this is the only process that affects the video. Has anyone else
heard of this problem, perhaps with another game?
It makes no difference what I run (either 20 things or nothing), the game
runs at full frames so long as I don't leave the machine inactive and let
the monitor go to sleep. Whether I run 20 apps or nothing, after the
monitor has been shut off by the inactivity timer, my frame rates are
slashed by a third.
Hmmmmmm.

You probably have some background task that is eating up your free memory
and that is why you get better fps when you reboot. The bad news...tracking
down the offending program might not be easy, and it might be time
intensive, and...it might make your system unstable.. :)
the good news?? N4 runs quicker when you reboot.................

Hey, I think I have a similar experience with N4. I've noticed at times
that I get a "stutter" in the corners - and usually, this is after my
machine has been up for a while. On a fresh boot, it is NOT there, ever.
I also am not running a screensaver, but the screen is set to power down
after 15 min.
Could be it! I'll try shutting that off and see if there's a diff.
BTW, are you running in any leagues with N4?
There's a small group of us running Friday nights at 9:00 pm eastern with
fixed setups. Let me know if you might be interested in running with some
other Canuks.

You mean what I use instead of Enditall? Can help you track any rogue
spyware or recently installed trojans as well. ;-) ProcessViewer 2000,
or PV2K for short. http://www.blehq.org

It doesn't solve the problem, though it may address the symptoms for you.

can replicate the frame rate difference precisely buy going into a test
session with static weather. Logically, it must be related to video card,
video drivers, BIOS settings for video or monitor shut down...nothing else
is changing or would affect frame rates that significantly that I know of
(unless the CPU is running in sleep mode!!).
I would love to join a league, especially a local one, since online pick-up
races are pretty much a write-off, but alas my schedule doesn't permit it.
I barely have time to practise offline these days. But thanks for asking.

Occasionally it is. Unless I'm d/ling something, if I'm gonna be away
for such an extended period, it gets switched off. But you are right,
it sure takes care of the undesired symptoms for me!

Cool. Thought that was it. :-)

In my experience with frame rates, anything can affect them. I think it
might be the way fps are calculated by various games that makes it this way.
A drop in room temperature could trigger a drop of 5 fps, given the right
circumstances.

monitor. Check whether "v-sync" is enabled for d3d and OpenGL in the
video properties.
If it is enabled, then your frame rate will be limited to your
monitor's refresh rate. If your monitor's refresh rate is set at 60Hz
and v-sync is enabled, you'll be limited to 60fps. If v-sync is
disabled, then your frame rate is free to go to whatever it can.
It sounds like you've got say 75hz monitor refresh rate, then it drops
to 60hz after power saving kicks in. Which would chop the frame rate a
bit.
Also, if you're vid card can't do the full 60 fps, it may drop to half
that, only 30 fps. So definitely uncheck the v-sync option.
