I'd like to table a motion...

Urging Papyrus to make something other than NASCAR

David Buttery proposed lobbying Sierra so Papyrus could make something other than NASCAR games. Replies called for a CART sim, while Alan Bernardo complained the group had become repetitive. Others defended it, pointing to technical threads on physics and field of view, and the thread ended with a UK versus US debate over the meaning of 'tabling a motion'.

This might sound harsh, but it's no wonder I don't find this place very useful anymore. All we get are the following types of posts: 1) GPL (Long): More of the same stuff about GPL and how great a simulation it is. While I agree with everyone's estimation of this sim, nothing new ever comes from these posts. 2) What's Should Papy do next: These post are insufferable. A few hundred respondents rattled of incoherent stuff like "CART!" and the like until the thread dies out 100 messages later. 3) WSC: Anything and all to do with this imaginary sim is all bunk and not informative at all. So be it. There's hardly any technical help here nor any posts that are truly meaningful. It's run by a group of ten or so posters who keep walking the same terrain over and over, like an 80 year-old man who talks of nothing but the past. <snip> Weeell... I don't think it's fair to say that there's "hardly any technical help" - you very rarely get a question that isn't answered on that subject; one can hardly post an answer if no-one's asked the question! The point about the NG being repetitive is reasonable - but having said that, Rally Trophy is starting to get up momentum in terms of posts now; I'd say that it's overtaken WSC in popularity of posting. -- David. Was a joke, poking fun at CART/IRL about how they are all just parades on wheels at 230mph every race :) (No passing, no action... alot like F1 lol )

What their favorite game is now? Oh wait, that's GPL, for a lot of people. Ok, how about what game that's been announced that they're looking forward to? Oops, WSC. I know - what game would they most like to see, but no one's writing? Hmm..that would be CA-(nevermind). I'm having a bit of fun with you, but isn't that what people do in any other game group? They discuss the games they love now, make predictions about upcoming games, and dream about games they'd love to buy if only someone would make it... Is it really that surprising? BTW, I think there's a lot of technical info given here. The fact that most of the issues haven't affected me yet, doesn't mean there aren't people willing to help. I was wrong in saying there's no technical help going on here. There is some. But, really, how many times do we have to hear everyone's thoughts on what game Papy should release next? Or about WSC, which doesn't look like it will ever be released? Enough is enough, I say. We need more technical stuff, more stuff on how to be a better sim driver, than a cadre of folks talking about the same things over and over. For technical stuff, read the posts about Ruud's and Gregor's simprojects. Thats techincal for even the educated engineer I would say :) Right now there is a very interesting Field of View discussion going on. There is also a long non-ranting thread trying to looking deeper into GP3 for some needed positivities. WSC discussion is pretty much non-existent now because since Empire put the lid on, little new information is around. N4's online wrecker problem is also discussed now. I would say that right now, this newsgroup is very general topic orinetated and not so game specific at all. Of course, there is also the rantings, but just click the down button on the keyboard. If you want new topic you think will be interesting, just start them yourself. It won't bite.

You've been reading the wrong threads... there's a humdinger<sp?> going on about field of view and how we perceive things in sims, which, I'll admit, has gone way off it's original topic (licencing), but is very interesting to read. That's fine, and I understand...<g> I'm not interested in Rally games, which someone else mentioned in this thread. I have my newsreader set to ignore threads which contain Colin McRae Rally, Rally Championship, etc. That way, I don't have to wade through posts that I have no interest in. I disagree. CART has a much wider international market now. I'd never even heard of CART here in Australia really until '98. CART is losing a bit of support in the US, but it is rising overseas, and we're just about to have races in the UK and Germany. I think it'd do well. Lol. Well, you're a bit rude about it, but... I'm visiting this newsgroup for the first time in 2 1/2 years tonight and NOTHING has changed! Except I can't remember whether the buzz around the Nascar series was for version 3 or 4. But GPL, the sim that prompted me to upgrade my 233 mhz cpu, is still king of the road. I guess a serious racing sim is a specialty item that just doesn't come along every day. Or year. Of course in this case we're talking about a game from the previous millennium, but I digress. Not that it matters but to "table a motion" (I believe) means that we're going to move onto other issues for the time being, and come back to the current one at a latter time. I think you want to simply make a motion... :) David Buttery <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Depends where you are! "Tabling a motion" in the States is pretty much equivalent to "shelving" it in the UK; here (UK if you're wondering!) it means to (metaphorically) lay it *on* the table for everyone to see and deal with. :-) Jonny

Nope. Someone needs to read up on their UK procedure! Here in the UK, "tabling a motion" means presenting it for debate - almost exactly the opposite of the US version. -- David. In UK English, we "table a motion" to put if forward for debate. (You can also table an amendment to a Bill etc.) You speak the language your way, and I'll speak it mine :-) -- David.
