Fairly short and sweet:
640x480 resolution, PO is about 120% in a race with a full field. I tried
higher resolutions, because I couldn't see the track very well. At 800x600, PO
is about 250%. At 1024x768, it's over 300%! Playing with the graphics
options, I couldn't get it any faster than about 23 FPS on the test, and really
didn't see any difference on the screen(quality-wise) DURING the test. Is that
the limit? Yes, I've installed the patch.
System:Athlon 1.3G, 128ram, Voodoo5, win98se. What makes it worse, I'll have
an acceptable frame rate during qualifying, but when the race starts, it sucks.
And, you can't change the graphics options once you've started the event. How
brain-dead is THAT???
Still, I find it hard to believe that my system won't run this game any better
than this... :(
Help?

Poor GP3 frame rates on a Voodoo5
Eldred Pickett reported very high processor occupancy in GP3 on his Voodoo5 system. Others explained a known Voodoo5 driver issue where 'fastest performance' mode is slower than single-chip or 2x FSAA mode. Switching to 2x FSAA greatly improved his frame rates, and Mark Jeangerard found the same fix helped GPL.
Automated summary.
That's odd. Your system should run GP3 very well. I can run GP3 in
1280x1240? (the one above 1024x768) with all cars and with the detail slider
all the way to the maximum. No slowdown whatever. (P4, 1.3, GeForce 2 MX)
That voodoo might be slowing you down. I'd flush out my drivers, reinstall
them and the game again and hope for the best.

I know it sounds like a crazy thing to try, but GP3 and the V5 don't get on
too well.

As Simon sez - there's a bug with GP3 and the V5 in normal dual-chip
mode.
Try single chip, or better yet, use 2xFSAA.
AMD 1.4 T-bird, V5, 1024x768 2xFSAA and I get PO 50-60% most of the
time, and this is with the FPS patch to up the FPS to 31!
HTH,
Kendt
Definitely some major prob, I get better frames with my V3 and 1ghz
athlon, running at 1024x768, 25 fps pretty solid.
Hopefully the other replies have nailed it for you. :)

I actually don't KNOW what drivers I have. I know I had to download them from
3dfxfiles.com, because I couldn't find my install CD when I re-did windows...
So, they SHOULD be fairly recent, right? :-)

single-chip or 2x FSAA, and see if it speeds up. Just wanted to add that as
Kendt said 2x FSAA is just fast as single-chip, so you may as well use that.

Very strange.
My system is...
Chip = 1GHz Athlon Thunderbird
512MB RAM
Hercules 2D Prophet II GTS 32MB Graphics card
OS = WinME
The machine is nearly a year old so it isn't state-of-the-art
anymore!
I'm running in Hardware mode and at a resolution of 1024 x 768 with a
PO of about 60-80%, although some external views in the rain may
increase the PO to about 90-100%.
Standard and obvious question : Have you got the latest graphics
drivers?
During the GP3 graphics test, you should, indeed, see a difference in
the quality of the tests.
I don't know much about the Voodoo5 card...I've got an nVidia
chipset. You haven't got some kind of FSAA turned on? Turn it off!
That's all I can suggest at this stage. Good luck!

I've seen some alude to this in their posts but I don't think they've got it
quite right. Some games only run on the V5 putting it in "single-chip"
mode, but for those that don't have this problem "normal" (both chips, no
AA) is the fastest, followed by 2x and then 4x FSAA.
GP3 for some reason seems to actually use "single-chip" mode when you have
it set to "normal" - so it's only using half the power of the V5, hence the
horrid framerates. But when you set the Anti-aliasing to 2x, which is
normally of course 10-20% slower than "normal" - GP3 gets MUCH better FPS.
Just go to the 3dfx icon in the taskbar, right click, bring up "3dfx Hub" -
then "3dfx Anti Aliasing", and select "2 sample AA" for Direct3D.
It seems that turning on 2x FSAA forces it to use both chips, so even with
the bit of speed loss with FSAA it runs much better than just on the single
chip - and looks better to boot.
I recall getting 50% qualifying and sub-100% race PO ratings with most
everything on, 1024x768, on my old Athlon 700 / Voodoo5 - so it should
scream on the 1.3 Ghz.

Here is the deal...this may not be gp3 specific because I never got it.
But the V5 shipped with a Bug in the drivers. So of the four settings,
the one listed as "fastest performance" wasn't. And the "single chip"
option outperformed it. You are correct about 2xfsaa being slower and 4x
even slower yet. But with the last few sets of drivers...I think from about
November 2000 on...the "fastest performance" option did go quicker than
"single chip".

Well, it's not sub-100% in a race, but it's about 120%(At Brazil). Sertainly
better than the 300% that I got before. Problem is, I can't remember now what
resolution I was running at. I had a friend come by yesterday while I was

Really? Changing the graphics didn't help before I changed the FSAA, so I
didn't try it after. Since it seemed better anyway, I let it go. Hmm...

Son of a gun... I've been trying to sort this out for a couple of months. It
is the 2xFSAA that did the trick. I thought I had tried that but I probably
made a mistake in which rasterizer(?) the game was using. This time I
switched 2xFSAA on in D3D Glide and GPL is now running like it did when I
first got the card. Musta tried 2xFSAA first, eh? Then I realized it was
slower and switched it off. Been driving me crazy. Also, Eldred, set your
graphics to manual on the Advanced screen. If you need more juice, start by
taking things out of your mirrors. I'm racing in the rain with a K6-III 450
at 800x600x70/140PO at most tracks. At 640x480 it's fluid.
By way of possible interest:
STCC2 also runs better with 2xFSAA on.
As a work around I've been running the same GP3 on the same hardware from
another instance of Win98SE that I have on a different drive. GP3 ran fine,
(voodoo5 5500) until I found out that my old diamond Monster control panel
was running in Display Properties. I edited out all reference to it in the
registry and msconfig and yep! V5 slow down. Massive PO. I restored the old
registry, got the Diamond Monster control panel back and GP3 ran fine once
again. With the V5 set to Best Performance.
GP3 and STCC2 are the only games that try to start my modem on the Diamond
Monster drive. On this drive, the one I've turned 2xFSAA on to make them
work, they do not try to start the modem.

I hope this isn't redundant. I have horrible usenet service and get launched
for months at a time. But in case it hasn't been said:
STCC2 may run better on a VooDoo 5 5500 system if the graphics are set to
2xFSAA instead of Fastest Performance. It does run much better on my system
with the (presumably) slower setting.
Right click>Properties>Settings>Advanced>3DFx Anti-Aliasing. There is a
drop down with several choices. I don't know whether STCC2 uses Glide or D3D
so I did both.
Much better frame rates.

Yep, someone else suggested using manual settings for the graphics, too. I
usually start with the mirrors anyway...<g>

Never argue with an idiot. He brings you down to his level, then beats you

It uses D3D.
