Is it possible to install the Sidewinder game controller software into
Windows 2000. MS' website says so, but I cannot get it to run. I want ot
set up my FF Wheel (gameport version) in Win 2k to run GPL. Does anyone
have any clues? Has anyone successfully set one up this way?

You can not install the software for the Joyport version - you must simply
deal with the wheel in dual-axis mode and no profiler - other than that it
works fine - just add it as a joystick in control panel

You are sunk. 3.02 will NOT install in any way,
shape or form.
The 4.0 software that comes with the USB model will install, with warnings.
4.0 works MUCH better under Windows XP than it does 2K, but you still get
the warning.
No, the 4.0 software is not downloadable. It's also not compatible with
Gameport wheels.
Microsoft has serious problems updating SideWinder software, to the point
that I'm fairly convinced it is NOT an in-house product and is written by
someone else for them.
Either that, or once they have your $100 they don't give a damn.
