WSC - put up or shut up.....

Flame warDemand that the West brothers show WSC progress

A poster demanded the West brothers give real news on World Sports Cars or admit problems. Many replied that the developers owe nothing and that the community created the hype, while sceptics said the Wests' own promises justified frustration. Carol Bekker said she had driven demos at trade shows, and the thread ended in petty insults over typos.

While various people can smuggly wax on on how WSC 'will be released when it released' I think it time we heard more than that. The west brthers and there admirers are responsible for getting the hype machine running for the past years, as the proclaimed 'gpl beater.' Now rumors are flying that the game is in Empire's control and there will only be a psx2 version, and various other things. Yet people stay silent. All this would be fine if it werent for the manufactured hype that makes every little Jonny down the street wait to upgrade his computer 'when wsc' comes out...and every wasted minute talking about the game and reading articles about it and listening to the wild notions of the west brothers. Now it appears they've been hoodwinked by empire and were suposed to pitty them.....TELL US WHATS GOING ON?

I just don't understand some people. On one hand you get Ilari having to deal with rumours that arise through whatever filtering of released information goes in in some people's heads, while on the other hand usually the same kind of people outright demand info products, as if they're being owed anything. It's apparently a no win situation. The Wests themselves have given no more info about their work than what was given for any other serious sim product out there. If it captured the imagination of virtual drivers better than other products, tough luck for others. But the 'hype' takes a mass of people to support and sustain, you honestly cannot blame only two people being responsible for it. It's a sociological phenomenon, and the blame for the hype bonfire continuously burning too strong for its own good is purely on the shoulders of the community. While hype can even be good if it brings along the support of the community (check the upocming Il-2 flight simulation and its forums), posts like yours tend to turn the hype into irrational anger. Try imaginining being a developer yourself, no matter how unlikely this may seem. How encouraging would it be for you to get messages from a bunch of nobodies you've never met, demanding from you to show them results of your work in progress, or beat it? If you're not content with the situation, that's your own right, but demands such as 'put up or shut up' are utterly ridiculous to hear from someone with absolutely no credit to their name. -Gregor G_Walter wrote:

WSC is still in development - and strange though it may seem - it will be released when it is finished - and not before (something which Papy, EA, and Hasbro seem to have forgotten how to do) There is even a web-cam on one of the West Bro's PC's and from time to time you can see them working on it - I wont post the link here as it was accidental that it became public-knowledge anyway - as it may be one of the features of the West Racing website - which will be going live with content in the very near future. I'd also invite you to read this http://www.simracingmag.com/wsc/articles/01q3/wsc_latest.shtml That was about a month ago - and explains what is in progress - and what's been done. I do not understand why you feel that the West's owe you anything? What have you given them? Nothing. Have you made some secret down payment on a product. No. You can moan and groan all you like - but the facts are thus - WSC is being developed by the West Brothers for the PC to be published by Empire. There is not strict release date yet - in so far as when it is finished - it will be published. (Personally an approach I prefer to "It'll be out in June" - "Sorry, it's been pushed back till September" - "We'll be releaseing in January" and so on and so forth) - WSC is also being developed for the PS2 - but not by the West Brothers - and is to be a much more consumer/arcade orientated product. Now you can moan, groan, shout, and scream all you want. But there's no point and no need. Well said.... It's not that we mean any harm to the Wests but they were the ones to get the ball rolling in terms of hype, now they are all quiet suggesting something is not quite right. I feel this way only because of the flack Geoff Crammond got for GP3.... so many people had so many things on their wishlist that when GP3 came out they said Geoff had failed yet he had included much more in the sim than he had promised first off which I couldn't understand...

They owe us all.... an answer....they created their own hype and have left us dangling for some time now... forget a demo, a new screenshot, just a progress report would be something at this stage.

I disagree with the basic premise that they owe us anything. However I would like them to continue the level of hype that they started. A progress report would be very welcome. I mean, ease up guys!!! The West Brothers strike out as independent developers so they don't have to deal with managers and corporate structure BS, and then they end up with half of RAS on thier asses like the worst micro-managers I've ever seen ;).... Damn it Chris and Tony - we demand a complete design doc for WSC, individual tasks, timeline with critical milestones and percentage completion. And we want it by Friday - you're already a week late on your project report ;)! Kendt

So, let me get this straight. Because someone here posts a stupid email saying put up or shut up (which isn't even very original !) it means that WSC won't ever happen ? Twisted logic !! If people ever bothered to read some of the posts here they would know where to find progress reports, but just in case you missed them http://www.simracingmag.com -- Ian P <email invalid due to spammers> "Warren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ZYHg7.139817$[email hidden]... > who gives a rats ass? > i was a nice fantasy, and one i believed would never happen anyway... this > post is showing what i thought all along, it wont happen as they say it > will. > > LOL longest April Folls joke i ever saw > > Rod Prince <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:MPG.15edea56706ce694989997@news-server... > > In article <[email hidden]>, > > [email hidden] says... > > > > > While various people can smuggly wax on on how WSC 'will be released > > > when it released' I think it time we heard more than that. I totally disagree on why GP3 was criticized. It was nothing to do with hype. It was because key elements of the game were substandard and hadn't moved on nearly enough (from GP2) to keep pace with the current level of PC sims. GP3 was released in July 2000, yet it looked considerably worse than games 2 years older. It had a 25 fps limit, unheard of in modern sims. Thanks to this the game never ran smoothly. I know there is a fix for this, but when you try to run at higher frame rates, it becomes too much for the engine and the PO shoots up, even on a fast PC. For how it looked, it stuggled in terms of performance. Compare the frame rates in GP3 and F1RC. F1RC looks way better and runs way faster. GP3 has it's infamous slow-mo effect, which ruined gameplay and enabled hotlappers to cheat (with the aid of the fps patch). The controller setup in particular, but also the whole menus are poorly designed. Until the patch, GP3 was pretty difficult to get working with certain wheels. Then we've got no internet play and poor LAN play, where games 2 years older can run with 20 cars on the net. Also we had an official website claiming the game had 'industry leading 3d audio' and yet the promised 3d sound never materialized in the game or the patch. Despite this the official site still listed it as one of the games features, even after release. I was such a big Geoff Crammond fan that I thought the criticism was harsh at the time, but I now feel it was justified. It was still better than F1 2000 though :) I read in an interview with GC before GP3 was released that he doesn't look at the work of his competitors. This is a real pitty. He could learn a real lot with a quick half an hour on GPL. Crapola. Al they did was show some industry people/insiders/journos/whatever the state of their work and their plans. WE took it from there! WE got excited by their goals. WE started discussing pros, cons, what-ifs and wishlists. The Wests have done nothing more than a few fact-based press releases, Q&A sessions and interviews. If WE get over-excited and then are disappointed that reality doesn't meet our inflated expectations, don't blame the West bros. On the other hand, if our expectations are met, we should thank them. The Westies did not hype WSC. The hype is caused by the community. All what the Westies did was saying 'this will be in, this will be in'. They did that too with GP3. Although with GP3 it turned out that a lot of the promised features were just not there, i do 'believe' in WSC, and i think the others should too. No one of us has ever spoken to Geoff Crammond. Not at E3, not in any direct interviews, not at any forum. The West-brothers have however given a radio-interview, they visit and even post at forums quite regularly, and Chris West even was at a GPL-Lan in Holland for 2 days. At that Lan he was very open and keen to get feedback from us. I spoke to him there, i know for sure now that the West-brothers have the knowledge and dedication to make this WSC a great sim. Best illustration of this is that he has even sold his (italian) sportscar to pay for development costs. Therefore i consider every attack at the West-brothers concerning WSC as a pure display of disrespect. They have worked for 5 years on this title and yet people slam them for not giving any extra info on development. I don't care. My appetite for WSC is almost as big as it was when GP3 was about to be released. We all know GP3 sucked as a sim. Therefore i have everlasting patience when it comes to WSC. I don't care if it's going to be released in Q4 2002, i just want the best Sim. If that means another year of development, so be it. Just let them do their job. For all the people who're are flaming the West-brothers in this newsgroup; Start playing WSC or GPL first. With only GP3-experience you will be pants in WSC:p Svend "GraDee" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:AYSg7.3966$[email hidden]...

It's pretty simple Greger- there has been NO demo, and NO sim yet released, and those who say there never will be are winning this argument untill there is such. (after all it's been 2 years) Those who say shut up and wait are just getting repetitive. Just because you have not seen a demo does not mean there is not one. I have seen and driven it (in fact 4 different demos at 2 ECTS's and 2 E3's), and I am very content. It wasn't stupid and it wasn't an insult, it was merely posted to create a debate about a game we ALL want to happen. Right ? Well the debate still rages, I see. Overall, that must be a good thing. The West Brothers may well be putting the finishing touches to their masterpiece. I have no idea about the state of the games' progress, as someone else rudely pointed out. People say "put up or shut up" in some obscure contexts. Playing cards, for example. No one is speaking, but when it comes time to place your bet somebody can say "put up or shut up", can't they ? Why it was taken so figuratively here, I'll never know. It must have been reasonable to assume that, of course, I had never met the West's or heard them talking(until the interview) so my use of "that" phrase could not have been a direct insult, and it wasn't.

The Wests have said a lot of really advanced stuff will be in WSC.. the Wests themselves ahve said that so that makes us eager... and 2-3 yearson, w haven't sen eveidence of most of thsi stuff. I don't think Geoff Crammond nor co-workers have gone public on any matter from day 1 (i.e F1GP1), thus, I thought the flack he got was unfair... since HE didn't promise anything, he jsut made the sim and kept his trap shut... that way he did his best to include what he could and wouldn't get into trouble bypromising things he couldn't fit in by the deadline imposed on him. It was through idiot websites such as Alpha F1 (I won't go into that any more....) that items placed on "wishlists", which by the way nobody bothered to forward to Geoff, were deemed to be fact...not through confirmation by Geoff or Microprose/Hasbro but just to get hits which is very sad... as a result people began to believe that things such as pace cars and stuff were fact when they were only fiction of one little man with a "beginners guide to HTML" book at hand.

Yep and it could be in beta form right now? I know we all want WSC but to me the Wests are not going to release anything that is less then what it should be!
