I need to replace my modem. I don't know if I'd be able to get the speed necessary to race on line, but I thought I'd ask here for advice. I am making the assumption that the best modem for on line racing would be very good for general web work also (correct me if I'm wrong). I am open to internal (PCI or ISA), external (serial or USB). I am running Windows ME on a 800Mhz PIII with Voodoo 5. On line GPL or N4 sure would be nice. I know there are no guarantees, but I need a new modem anyway. Thanks in advance, Russell

Your surfing will not be impacted, and the gaming will be much smoother at these settings. Of course, we're still talking dial-up here, and you can't really compare it to a DSL or Cable connection for online gaming. But dialup alone should not keep you away from gaming. And the best advice I can offer, get a wheel and pedals. And be assured, online N4 and GPL is indeed, very nice. Addictive, probably. Marriage threatening, likely. I agree with all of Ed's points, but would add that you can setup a separate connection (at the aforementioned slower speeds) for gaming, and a faster one for websurfing. I connect at 19600 for Gaming (GPL) and at around 49000 when web-surfing. The only annoyance is that you have to re-dial. Ed White wrote:
