Ok, finally ordered Cable Modem (the Blueyonder service from Telewest (yorkshire, england) ) which will be installed in around 2 weeks, and they insist I use a firewall. So I'm looking for any recommendations for a firewall that's gonna let me play GPL, UT, CS (etc) online and that does a good job security-wise. I'd rather use a free one, but I'd pay if the free ones aren't good enough. Thanks in advance, Simon.
get the best CONSEAL www.conseaslfirewall.com get the easiest Zone alarm www.zonelabs.com Both things get the pro version, and look for a crack... "Simon Brown" <[email hidden]> a crit dans le message de news: cVml7.103682$[email hidden]...

Tiny Firewall works here just fine. Switched over from Zone Alarm (the free one) after the exploited of the previous version. Some hacker got to my kernel with ZA installed during some 2day ftp downloads. Tiny is pretty easy to "Tighten Up" too. http://www.tinysoftware.com/ -- R.I.P. - William Joseph Dunlop OBE MBE 2/25/52 - 7/2/2000

I used Zonealarm for a while, but I don't bother with one now. I just check for dodgy things going on and re-install every couple of weeks. I have no sensitive data, so there's no worry there. If you try this, do sniff packets going into/out of your machine ;-) Norton Ghost is also very useful for a re-install - it means I can play around with didgy software to my hearts content, f**k up my install and then 3 minutes later have a new OS :-D Andy -- Showering fully clothed shows you're crazy, showering nude shows your nuts Anagram: Andy Laurence > Endurance Lay NB: Spamtrap - do the obvious -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 90,000 Newsgroups - 16 Different Servers! =-----

If using cable-modem (or any modem) -definitely- get a firewall up a.s.a.p! Zone-Alarm is very nice, and free too (or buy ZA pro-version). Still waiting for a router to arrive, but ZA does the job very well. Hopefully you've not been hit by any code-red (or variants) yet. If you try ZA, under "Alerts" options, mark the check-box to keep a log (in C:\internet logs\ZALog.txt. Wait a bit, the open the log-file, and view how much probing is being done to (try/fail) accessing your computer (don't use the pop-up warning, it's too annoying). You should see quite a few "port-80" probes, from users infected with code-red (or variant virus).

Is there a reason behind this? > Still waiting for a router to arrive, but ZA does the job very well. > Hopefully you've not been hit by any code-red (or variants) yet. I don't use IIS, so code-red isn't a problem, and I also have no-one in my address book, so I can't propogate an E-Mail virus. On a Win98 machine, it's not a problem when you have no way of passing on a virus, and you have no valuable data. I know it's not exactly sensible, but I do keep logs, so if anything does go funny, I can wipe it all and start again. > If you try ZA, under "Alerts" options, mark the check-box to keep a > log (in C:\internet logs\ZALog.txt. Madness, especially as you can go to microsoft.com and get a list of everything you have not got. Simon, Can't recommend a free one, I'm afraid, as I *bought* (shock, horror!<g>) a copy of Norton Internet Security. VROC has no problem with it. You can pick up a copy from www.cdromcellar.co.uk for 25. Btw, I'm using the Blueyonder cable service too here in Bristol; I think you'll be pleased with the difference over a phone line ;-)

I have been using sygate without problems for a few months now, no annoying popups, just a log, and no setting up either..... Dunno.., I use the freeware version (an older ZA version, v2.1.1 compared to latest v2.6). I'm guess the pay version has many, many more features. Matt
