Rally Trophy - The next GPL?

Notable threadRally Trophy previews and developer Q&A

David Cook asked whether the upcoming historic rally sim Rally Trophy might be the next GPL after reading a hands-on preview. Developer Ilari Lehtinen answered questions, saying preview builds were unfinished rather than locked to novice physics, the driver's head moves with the car, each tyre is modelled separately, Act Labs shifter support was planned, and the Lancia Stratos was included. Previewers including John Bodin and Goy Larsen were enthusiastic, though some found early physics simplified.

I was a little depressed when browsing the release dates at High Gear, then I decided to give a read to the "Hands On" regarding Rally Trophy at http://www.sportplanet.com/hg/article.php?page=1&id=40 due to be released in November. Damn this looks promising! Developers: IMHO the key to realistic phisycs is in the drivers POV. Create a 6 DOF POV and you will nail it. All the talk about physics, and how they are still under development makes me apprehensive. We at RAS have heard that a thousand times before. Will the game support the Act Labs RS Shifter? How is the Force Feedback? Analog Clutch? Just a few of my questions... With the graphics I see and from what I hear the killer sounds, the only question is how it will FEEL. The in-car screenshot looks good too! Man what a surprise this would be!!! David Cook
From what I've read on the net from people that have the peview version it's no GPL beater in the physics department, I've seen the physics described as a little arcadeish but with a very nice 'feel'. The preview copy is not bad at all for what it is. From the best of my knowledge, only the NOVICE level physics are enabled in the preview copy I have (When you set a different level of physics and go back into the menu, its always defaulted to NOVICE) and they aren't that bad really. So if the more advanced level physics are done well, this could be an excellent sim. Even as early a working version that the preview copy is, it's better than some final products I have seen. ;) Scott PA-Scott http://www.PowerSimsMag.com "Thore Sorensen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Wed, 05 Sep 2001 12:55:29 GMT, "GBB" <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >From what I've read on the net from people that have the peview versionit's > >no GPL beater in the physics department, I've seen the physics describedas

Remember, one cannot compare pure asphalt-breed racecars with silly power-to-weight ratios to 60's and 70's rallycars. If it felt like GPL, it wouldn't be right because it isn't GPL. If you got to drive a real old F1 and a real old rallycar, you'd have much easier life behind the rallycar's wheel :) We definitely won't make the physics overcritical for GPL fans, as we want it to suit everyone. From my experience with FWD and RWD cars (not F1's, mind you ;), RT feels pretty real. It's still really easy to find your car from an entirely different spot than you aimed at if you're not careful with the throttle. And hey, Paddy Hopkirk liked it. -Ilari "GBB" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:5hpl7.26662$[email hidden]... > From what I've read on the net from people that have the peview versionit's > no GPL beater in the physics department, I've seen the physics describedas

Ilari - Does the driver's point of view move up-down-forward-backward-left and right (6DOF POV)? If you nail that, the rest will fall into place IMHO. - David "Ilari Lehtinen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9n5cf1$iia$[email hidden]...

Ok, but can you answer one thing then, the press copy that you guys ship out, is it in fact locked in "novice" model ? Or has the driving model moved on a bit from the build .52 we got perhaps ? Because being one of the persons who did the Preview for "The Pits", I still think the physics are a bit simplified, not arcadeish or anything like that, but it most certainly flatters the driver, if not, I'm going to apply for a position as driver with the ProDrive Subaru Team :-), Richard Burns, move over, there's another Norwegian coming :-) Don't get me wrong, I most certainly like it, and will buy it and I happen to believe it has tons of potential and will more than likely be the best Rally Sim released to date, but my previous road car was something akin to the Escort Mk1 in the preview, namely an Opel Manta with about the same HP, which we used both for track days and "forest stages", all unofficial of course :-), and there's no way I could have driven that car in the same way I could drive the Escort All FORD fans shut up, the Escort might be a better Rally car than my Manta was, but it was good enough for comparison at least :-) > And hey, Paddy Hopkirk liked it. It's not "arcadish" at all -- some of the physics paramters may be a bit overdone (the brakes seem a bit too effective at this point), but the preview version doesn't have all the bells and whistles, so I'm willing to bet that the final version is MUCH better . . . and the preview is very, VERY good. It doesn't remind me of any sim, FWIW -- what it reminds me of is blasting along the gravel-and-asphalt backroads of my youth in my '72 Opel Manta. As someone else said, you just can't compare the cars being modeled with a 1967 Grand Prix car . . . but compared to what they're supposed to be modeling, RT may well be up in the GPL league. -- JB On Wed, 05 Sep 2001 12:55:29 GMT, "GBB" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Ah! Another former Opel Manta owner! GREAT fun! FWIW, I agree that I couldn't have driven my Manta like I can the Escort in RT, but I believe the Escort has a bit more horsepower than my Manta did. I am also taking into account the fact that the Escort that's modeled in RT is actually a rally-prepared car, not a roadgoing car like my old Manta. All things considered, I'd still rate RT pretty high compared to my own real-life experiences in my Manta. Also FWIW, I will be posting my own preview on the BHMS site soon (shortly after I get done with the F1 2001 preview). ;-) -- JB On Wed, 05 Sep 2001 16:43:03 +0200, Goy Larsen <[email hidden]> wrote:

It was build 0.52 you had? Ok, we're running 0.73 at work right now :). I don't remember what changes have taken place after your version but physics tweaks and road surface parameters have changed for sure. -Ilari Goy Larsen wrote:

The answer is a resounding "yes" -- in a very realistic manner, too. All that is needed for the experience to be complete, in fact, is for my wife to stand behind me with a cookie sheet and smack me over the head occasionally to properly simulate my head hitting the roof of the car! ;-) -- JB On Wed, 5 Sep 2001 10:35:11 -0400, "David L. Well, FWIW, my Manta isn't much down on HP to Escort included here and is probably well up on torque from it's 2.7 engine (courtesy of Mantzel Opel Tuning :-), and it has also seen a lot of "development" work going into it's suspension, with progressive raising rate springs, adjustable Koni's, LSD, harder suspension bushings...etc, and there's just no way that *I* could have driven it like I can the Escort in RT This doesn't mean that I think they've gotten it "wrong", or that it's "arcade", just that it's parameters, or whatever they use to tune the physics, flatters the driver, I'm very much reminded of NFS:PU when I drive these cars and find myself being able to take corners in a way I just can't see myself doing in real life, at least not with as little seat time as I've had with this one yet, which will increase a lot when it's released as this is something I'm looking forward to, and I did what I said in the review, went back to more driving as soon as the article was done :-), now if I could just get my hands on a version with the Lancia Fulvia HF in it I'd be a happy man :-) > Also FWIW, I will be posting my own preview on the BHMS site soon > (shortly after I get done with the F1 2001 preview). I'll take credit/responsibility/blame for John's good words on SoS. No question -- NONE -- that out of the box, SoS is a STINKER. But give it a little love and a decent configuration utility, and it's like a stray cat that steals your heart, your watch (thanks for the swell toy!), your food (you're not eating that, right?), etc. No question, SoS is an admittedly quirky taste. I suspect, however, that Rally Trophy is going to be a purebred that sets the next standard for what driving titles are supposed to be about. At least that's what I'm hoping. Don't trust THEM, trust your fellow league racer me! Yes your the only person not previewing Rally Trophy ;) Anyway, I'm previewing it for specialstage.com soon, don't have it yet, but hopefully in the next week. It would only make sense as all the US Rally drivers go there (it's the US Rally HQ site). Hi Ilari, Can you tell us more about the tyre model and surfaces in RT? Is it, for example, possible to lock the wheel on the grass, while the other wheels on the tarmac are still rotating? And will a RWD car break out when you're on the throttle too early when exiting a corner? Looking forward to your answers, Remco
I've driven RT's predecessors, and the best thing I can say abt. RT is that it won't mess you up for GPL. Most sims, once you've driven them for a few hours, require a period of readjustment before you can drive GPL again. Not to say RT's physics are the same--they ain't--but they come from the same 'school'. Also, there will be different levels, maybe even tweakable in an .ini file, so you can adjust the traction for different textures (grass, usw.). The worst thing abt. its predecessors was that the game's scoring cheats. It should be the easiest thing for a computer to do to keep track of the times, but I gave up when I was ahead at each checkpoint (often by a huge margin), only to place 32nd overall (and 16th in class, or whatever) for the whole stage. Life is full of frustrations; I didn't need this one. --Steve Smith "David L. Actually, SoS is one of those titles that DEMANDS love -- I have a love for the old Deusenbergs and Millers of that era, so I am MUCH more willing than most to suspend my disbelief enough to make SoS work for me. If you have no interest in the era, and if you didn't DESPERATELY want to like the SoS demo even after you tried it a few times, then it will probably never hold any appeal for you. <G> As for Ford Racing, I really liked the graphics (nicely-done and very realistic-looking overall), and I KNOW I can detect a nicely-functional physics engine at work there, but the sounds do not match up with the actions of the physics engine, which creates a MAJOR disconnect there. Add in bad control authority and the resultant end-product is a poor game that looks like it could have been a good little sim. :-( ;-) -- JB On Wed, 05 Sep 2001 21:35:46 GMT, [email hidden] wrote:

First of all (and without wanting to speak for the developers), I think Group B rallying is beyond the scope of Rally Trophy (i.e. pre-Driver's Cup/Championship). Secondly, can we get some firm sources regarding Henri Toivonen's alleged quick lap around Estoril? I have heard this anecdote repeated many times for many years and I still find it hard to swallow. As talented as Henri was and as monstrously powerful the S4 was, remember that the F1 cars were much more powerful (height of the turbo era), much lighter, had huge wings/diffusers, and qualifying slicks. 1986, incidentally, saw a dry qualifying session in Portugal. Likewise just something I read, I don't have figures. But I have read race reports from saloon races at Estoril where it seems some strange things can happen (eg minis outpacing 911's and 240z's). cheers John

Can't answer the first one, but yes, even in the early build that was sent to us for the preview, the car would swap ends on you every now and then Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com
Each tyre is modelled separately, so yep, that's possible. And as Goy already stated, car swaps ends if you're not careful :) -Ilari "Remco Moedt" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Great suggestion! A cookie sheet! All along my wife has been using the stainless steel frying pans claiming it was the most realistic solution. But she was starting to complain about my head denting her high quality pans ;) Scott PA-Scott http://www.PowerSimsMag.com "John Bodin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

But I don't quite get it, it's worse to admit that i drive a silly Golf 1.6 GL two door 1989 model now. Now that's a car lacking personality. :) -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying

Not something a car/racing enthousiast would want to be associated with. Jan. =--- "Pay attention when I'm talking to you boy!" -Foghorn Leghorn.

Ah, well up north it carries more a "youth with not so much money" image. But also during the strong winters here it helps a lot with a proper built car and engine. As for the racing enthusiast thing, I simply can't afford such car, which would be a Lotus Elise. They cost around $40.000 here. Even something simple as a Toyota Celica is over $25.000 :( -- Olav K.
