I am contemplating buying one of the above Formula games but the kid at the
local Software Etc. knew NOTHING
so
I was wondering what the consensus is the better Sim for an older PIII 450
with a 3dfx AGP 3000 card and a SB Live Sound card
Any suggestions ?????????????
AS ALWAYS, THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!

F1 Racing Championship or F1 Championship Season 2000?
Tim Deatherage asked which F1 sim suited his Pentium III 450 and Voodoo 3. Most advised waiting for EA's F1 2001, said to have a more efficient graphics engine. John Bodin criticised F1RC's glass-smooth tracks and uncommunicative physics, while David G Fisher and Tony Rickard said it gave the best feel, and posters agreed that wheel range and controller settings strongly shape how a sim feels.
Automated summary.
Neither, unless you're dying for an F1 sim right now. The successor to F1CS2K, F12001 is due out late this month, I believe, and is
said to have a much more efficient graphics engine than its predecessors. There should be a few reviews out within a few days as
well, - eh JB? ;-)

Brand New Racing Game... er simulation = Brand New Computer.
He said he had a P3-450 w/Voodoo 3000

Just wait a few weeks until F1CS 2001 comes out and get that.
It should run better than both F1RC and F1CS.
The only "slowdowns" you will get will be at the starts, but
after that its fine.
If I can run both games fine on a Celeron 366 and TNT1, I think it
should be fine for you.

I have spent a lot of time lately farting around with CS and trying to
even out the framerate. I found one odd stumbling block that was really
destroying my fps. I have a PIII 500 and usually overclock it with softFSB
to 559(big jump eh ?? not....) :) anyhow, the menus would stutter and
any new sounds would briefly pause the whole sim when it was overclocked.
Even with extremely low resoulutions, and details. I've backed off the
oc'ing, and hit a really smooth spot on the graphics. Generally set most
graphics to medium and turn off the bridges and a few other items. (of
course I only use the mirrors for brief checks)
Is that perfect? no but the hiccups are gone. I thought I would never
get a smooth framerate from CS, but it's pretty decent now.
However....if you are big into F1, then it wouldn't hurt to compare the
new 2001 version due out shortly. My biggest gripe with all these F1 sims
are the tracks. Damn chicanes EVERYWHERE.

IMO, the tracks in F1RC look glorious, but they are WAY too smooth. I
get the idea that I'm driving on glass, not a real track. That busts
the "simulation" aspect for me in a big way.
Similarly, the physics modeling is WAY too uncommunicative for me.
I'm not a Force Feedback fan at all, but with things like GPL, NASCAR
Heat, or F1CS2K, I can REALLY feel when the car is approaching the
limits of adhesion, and when things go wrong, I know WHY they went
wrong and what I did to make it all happen. With F1RC, I never have a
clue when I'm approaching the limit, or why things go wrong when I
find myself swapping ends. Again, this really takes away from the
"simulation" aspect for me, and overall, F1RC feels far too much like
F1WGP for my taste.
That doesn't mean it's bad by any stretch -- it just means that F1RC
doesn't tickle my sim senses in a pleasurable way, and I know a lot of
other people who feel the same way. At the same time, there are lots
of people who REALLY like F1RC. Neither camp is inherently right or
wrong -- it all comes down to a matter of taste.
I tossed my comment out because I really want to like F1RC, but it's
just not immersive enough for me. So, no matter how good Schumi's
F1RC Relay is, it's just not going to do it for me.

As for the physics, I absolutely love the way the car in F1RC communicates
to me when it's near the limit. Contolled slides. The whole bit.
Strange how people view sims. I sometimes think controller, controller
setup, and computer system have more to do with the different "feel" than
anything else.

Same for me, F1RC provides the greatest feel of the modern F1 sims to date.

Totally agree. Just switching between a wheel with 270 degrees to 180
degrees and back completely changed my views on the controllability of
various sims. Plus, of course some time to fiddle with the settings!
I think a "revisit" to various sims every now and then, checking out the
latest downloads can reap great rewards.
I just did a fresh install of F1RC, downloaded Xaver's physics 1.4 and
watched a couple of races compared with the original install. Now the AI can
negotiate the chicane Suzuka without all getting stuck. It is too early to
say this is the answer to F1RC's AI problem but it certainly looked the most
realistic racing on a PC I have seen so far.
Cheers

Yep. What would be cool for a developer to do is, as part of the
standard wheel calibration, you are asked to turn your wheel 90
degrees to the right, then 90 degrees to the left. The developer
could use that information to set up what they think is the correct
steering linearity and steering lock. Of course the user should be
able to override those settings, but it would give a common starting
point.

The point of all this would be that the sim software

I wonder about that also. But, why would a controller feel different in 1 or 2
games? Doesn't matter which game. You'd think the controller would have the
same feel and communicate the same thing(s) in each game. I'm probably not
understanding it enough to say it correctly... :(
