Fake ID spam turns into Hitchhiker's Guide chat
Regulars joked in response to a spam post offering fake IDs. The thread moved on to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Red Dwarf, then to where to find the old Infocom Hitchhiker's text adventure, with links to a Java version and Z-code interpreters.

There is a BBC TV series version that was made many years ago, that was
shown on PBS a few times.
Unfortunately the Author of those books passed away this past year. I had

In Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy there's a guy with two heads and the lead
character walks around in pyama's and a bathrobe all the time.

Anyone know where I could find the HitchHiker's Guide computer game for
Windows? Or at least MS-DOS - did it make it to the IBM side?

There was a "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" game produced many years ago,
by a company called Infocom - the same people that wrote Zork (the text
based version, in the late '70's & early '80's).
It was entirely text based, and did not run on Windows or MS-DOS - it had
it's own OS. These days you can get an emulator (the Z-machine emulator)
which will allow you to play the game (no license required I believe),
although I'm not sure about the game license side of things
You could probably locate a copy of the emulator by searching Google, and
depending on the license of the game, download that too.

Not exactly their own OS. Infocom games used their own interpreter, and the
games were written in Z-Code. (originally standing for Zork-Code, from back
in the days when P-Code for Pascal code was the hot new thing) The
interpreter ran on a variety of OS's - eg. Apple, MS-DOS. Since then, a
variety of Z-Code interpreters have since been written for other systems.
I've got a shareware one for the PalmPilot so I can play the original Zork 1
and 2 during boring meetings. (just taking notes...)

The Infocom property was finally bought by Activision, who released almost
all the old Z-code adventure games in various budget packs up until quite
recently. However, the Hitchhiker's license reverted back either to Douglas
Adam's or his publishers before those releases, so this is one of the few
games NOT included in those packs. You may find a copy playable on a Z-
machine emulator (and they exist for almost any imaginable platform)
floating about, though -- The beauty of Z-code was (and is) that it really
was the same compiled game code executing on all computer platforms.
However, what you may find could be something like a ZX Spectrum tape image
or C-64 disk image, which of course needs to be converted into "proper"
files before use...
