A fellow GPL addict has finally bought a Geforce 3 and is not overly
impressed as an upgrade from his Voodoo2 SLI using glide, to GPL Ver1.2
latest D3D patch for the Geforce. Vsync disabled using NVmax.
PC is PIII 850MHz(100MHz) on Abit BF6
NE2000 ISA network card
256Mb RAM
Morpheous GF3 64Mb
SBLive
Win98
Reformatted Windows partition twice. AGP x2, tried 128Mb & 256Mb AGP
aperture.
Currently using the 12.00 Morpheous drivers, although has tried
12.41,14.10,14.70 . Some 16bit cockpits, all 3D wheels.
Problem is frame rate - back of grid at Monaco 50% detail, 19AI, 1024x768,
no FSAA get ~18-19FPS( all video card drivers gave ~same results) - mostly
36 FPS in practice mode.On V2 SLI he had ~25 fps at back of grid, 25%
detail.
He has made sure separate IRQ's SBlive on IRQ10, network card on IRQ5, GF3
on IRQ11.
Surely this poor a frame rate on the mighty GF3 is not right, although
Superbike 2001 at 1024x768 also seems a bit slow visually. Other posts I've
seen at Legends Central and High Gear on this subject give various results-
some agree/some say 36FPS all the time.
Any suggestions? Anyone with a similar system GF2/3 - what results do you
get? - make sure to post res, %detail, PC spec's. Would the CPU be holding
it back?
Thanks for any replies.

i know because i've got the same cpu, PIII-850E(100fsb) abit be-6 asus v7700d
geforce2 gts 32mb. i really need a new mobo and ram. the mobo is only 2xagp

I was guessing it might be the CPU.
His old videocard was a sad Diamond Stealth S220 (4Mb Rendition) so anything
is an upgrade. He used the V2 SLI mostly.
What fps do you get.
This old post I found from Legends Central on a different topic "GPL at
800*600 Detail Baise 50%.... " shows what's probably possible:

You should be getting better than that. As an example, I have Athlon 1.4,
GF3 and run 2048 res, 100% detail, JF carset. 36 fps even at back of full
field.
Jam
GPL for life! When i'm sliding..i'm smiling..:)

about 14fps 1240x1024 high everything. (aa off, v-sync off)
Well, GF3 isn't particularly a great deal faster than a GF2. Plus it's
pretty difficult to get a solid 36 fps with 3d Wheels. Try reducing the
draw distance on the 3d wheels. I have mine set on 8. There's a util with
the jf carset to change 3d wheel draw distance.
I'd have to guess the same as Obake that it's the CPU letting the side down.
For comparison my system is-
GF2 Pro 64 MB
P3-1000 (133)
256 MB PC133 RAM
BE6-2 m/b
SBLive
WinME
3DMark2001 = 3267
I run 1280*1024 with the draw distance on 75% and at the start of a full
grid race at Monaco (in-car view, back of grid) I get 31 fps before the flag
drops, falling to a low of 26 fps just after the start and going back up to
36 fps within about 5 seconds.
I'd recommend using 3DMark2001 to check if your friends system is performing
to it's potential. Run the standard test in the default res and log onto
the online results browser to compare your score against other systems with
the same hardware. It's a very useful tool. Uding 3DMark2001 I found about
4 bios settings that were set wrong, and changing them got about an extra
20% from my PC (no kidding). The settings were cpu and memory timing
settings.
It doesn't actually tell you what is wrong of course, but it lets you
compare your system with the average score for p3-850/gf3 (or whatever
system you have) systems, so you can tell if something is likely to be set
wrong.

This is interesting. I dont have any problems with my fps but it is
good to know about this util.. Thanx!
fwiw my puter is basically the same as yours Simon but I have
512mb of pc133 ram, Abit6 SA6R mobo & still running 98SE

We did a fresh install of GPL and then of the JF Carset 1.2 with 3D wheel
draw distance 8m.
Now get ~22fps @ 850MHz, ~25 at 944MHz.
His previous 3D wheels were not from the JFcarset, so I am guessing they
probably had full distance draw ahead which wouldn't help.
