I'm getting this error message now on my system. I haven't had time to play
GPL in a few months now, so I finally got some time and I decided to go for
it again. It used to work flawlessly on this same system a couple of months
ago. The only thing that has changed since then is that I added another
512MB of ram (it's upto 640MB now). Here's the configuration:
Athlon/Tbird 1.0Ghz
Asus A7V
640MB
40GB drive
Geforce2 GTS
Win98SE
DirectX 8.0
GPL 1.2.0.1 w/DX drivers

The amount of ram is the problem. First of all: Windows 98 itself has
problems with ram amounts over 512 mb, so I suggest removing that extra 128
mb, because it's useless anyway. If you want to keep it, you have to adjust
the vcache settings in the file "win.ini" as a workaround. See this article
of MS's knowledge base for details:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q253/9/12.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=g
n&FR=0&qry=ram%20&rnk=13&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98SE (maybe copy &
paste of the url is necessary).
You then also have to adjust the amount of ram that GPL uses for replays by
adding the following line to the file "core.ini" which can be found in the
main GPL folder:
[ Replay ]
ReplayMemoryOverride = 128000
HTH!

I suck! It's the "system.ini", not the "win.ini". Sorry for the mistake. :(

You answered your own quesstion here:

GPL won't accept more than 512 MB RAM.
Check several other related threads that are circulating this
newsgroup for the moment.
As far as i know there is only one solution, rip out some RAM.

Thanks it did. I did already know about the Vcache thing, and I did adjust
that accordingly in the system.ini as suggested by the MS support page,
however that did not help. It was that last core.ini setting that did it. I
wonder if I still need the vcache setting, because apart from GPL, I've not
had any problems with any other applications complaining about too much
memory.

As an addendum: I just removed the Vcache settings in the Windows'
system.ini, and just left the ReplayMemoryOverride in the GPL core.ini, and
it works fine. You don't need to use the Vcache settings if you don't need
it.

It was that last core.ini setting that did it.Try putting this in your core.ini file. You may have to change the
number for your system, but try this first.
[ Replay ]
replayMemoryOverride = 160000
Hope this helps.
