okay sports fans, i want to know what your favorite racing games are.
in the past month i got a 1.4 athlon fully loaded, and decided that it was
time to buy a racing wheel. i've always wanted one, and now that i was no
longer running a P2/333 i could seriously get into some games. so i picked
up a microsoft sidewinder precision wheel and pedals for a ninety bucks and
NASCAR 2000 for $9.99, and to tell the truth, i don't think i've ever had
more fun with a computer in my life, and i've been using them for nearly 15
years. i should have bought a wheel ages ago, though i have a feeling USB
has really let game controllers shine. then i was let on to this newsgroup,
and i've learned a lot more.
from what i've been lead to believe, NASCAR 2000 is a great game, but there
are many, many better ones out there. i've asked around before, but haven't
compiled any lists. i've also been playing the Porsche Unleashed demo
pretty constantly, and loving it.
so what are people's favorites? i dig NASCAR and formula one racing, but i
think getting into rally racing on the pc would be a frigging blast. people
in here talk favourably about "GPL", whatever it is, like it's the greatest
racing game ever, so i'm probably interested.
any input appreciated.

Flame warFavourite racing sims list sparks F1RC flame war
A new wheel owner asked for favourite racing sims, and replies recommended GPL, NASCAR Racing 4, GP3 2000, F1RC, F1 Championship Season 2000, Rally Championship, NASCAR Heat, Sports Car GT and others. A claim that F1 Racing Championship had faded out provoked David G Fisher, who cited F1RC Relay sign-ups, and the exchange with ymenard and Thom j. degenerated into insults and a challenge to meet in person.

Right then. First, I have to admit that I hate NASCAR, so I won't give
any advice regarding that, except to say that NASCAR 4 is generally
judged to be a fine piece of kit. I have no idea about bike sims,
either On proper car racing (by which I mean racing with right turns),
however, I can give you my prejudices, for what they're worth...
"GPL, whatever it is", is Grand Prix Legends, a simulation (note that
word) of the 1967 F1 season. It's staggeringly brilliant, and by far
the most addictive sim I've ever played. Be warned: it demands, and
will relentlessly extract, total commitment. If you're not willing to
spend several hours (yes, hours) just getting round one lap at
something like racing speed, this is not the game for you. To say the
learning curve is steep would be like saying the Pope was quite
religious.
On the other hand, if you are willing to put in the very
considerable effort GPL demands, you'll be handsomely rewarded. Getting
it just right is more satisfying in this game than in any other I've
played, especially online, where (current - hopefully temporary -
server problems permitting) you'll find one of the best driving
experiences anywhere, and one a lot cleaner and more polite than...
well, N4, for example.
A surprising number of people think GPL will be boringly slow. Anything
but, in fact - tuned properly, these cars can do 200mph, and around a
fast circuit such as Spa (the 8-mile version, of course) you can easily
average 150-plus. It's not perfect, of course - tyre wear isn't
simulated, the AI cars can't slipstream and you can't really do
pitstops - but that's more than compensated for by the huge user
community, which produces tracks (some easily as good as the originals
- Solitude and Le Mans are masterpieces), sounds, graphics, guides,
ranking systems... you name it, it's there.
The main problem with GPL is getting hold of it. It came out in 1998
(yep, it's *still* that good after three years), and not many of us
feel like letting go of our copies, so you'll have to rummage in
bargain bins a bit, or check eBay and the like. It is cheap, though.
OK, now I've stopped raving about GPL (it does get you like that), what
else? On the rallying front I'd go for Rally Masters, which has a nice
balance between realism and playability (as they say in the games mags)
and can be a real blast. Lots of choice of car and competition -
definitely a title to look out for. Rally Championship 2000 (or
whatever it's called in your neck of the woods) is lovely to look at,
and has loads of options, but the handling is weird. The Colin McRae
series are fun, but rather arcadey.
Modern F1? F1 Championship Season 2000 is probably the best of a not
terribly outstanding bunch. Certainly it's better than its predecessor
F1-2000. Grand Prix 3 has outstanding weather effects - unfortunately
not a lot else has changed since GP2. F1 Racing
Sim/Championship/whatever has faded into obscurity after a bright early
showing.
Others? I prefer TOCA2 to STCC2, despite TOCA's arcadey setup - it's
just more fun when you're bashing up drivers you've heard of!
NFS:Porsche 2000 (as it's called in the UK) you know about from the
demo - get the full game, as it's very good. Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing
is more fun than it might sound. And - if you do a bit of work on the
setup first - Spirit of Speed 1937, despite falling well below
expectations, is not the complete and utter pile of ordure that its
demo is. Viper Racing I *still* haven't got around to buying - shame on
me!
Conclusions: spend 10 quid/bucks on GPL, and play it until your house
is so full of grime you can't see any more. Clean up the section of
grime near your PC, and carry on.

Kind words for SoS. And, believe it or not, the
demo responds as well as the full title to setup.
The setup involves downloading a configuration
utility from here:
http://home.att.net/~stickworks/
The direct download URL is:
http://home.att.net/~stickworks/ctfjv320.zip
Then go here to see how it should be set up:
http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/depart/mar01/stick.html
There is a forum at High Gear for SoS and there is
an Offline Racing League forming under the banner
of the First Annual Spirit of Speed Challenge.
Download custom scenarios and try your luck behind
the wheel of the Iron Ghosts that moved motor
racing from curiosity to sport.
By the way, if you do download the SoS demo, the
StickWorks utility will work with it, too.
Remove "hi" from address or it will bounce....

Where do you get this nonsense? About 550 people have already signed up at
the just opened F1RC Relay site http://f1rcrelay.com/LDrivers.asp , and it's
still the most posted to forum at HG. Tons of add-ons too.
David G Fisher
My personal favorite is still Sports Car GT. I am hesitant to recommend
it because it is a bit buggy and to really get the most out of it you
need to spend some time downloading patches and add-ons, but it is still
the only decent simulation of sports car racing that I have been able to
find for the PC. Right now I have a custom .exe file set up that
changes the classes to be more like the current LeMans Series classes,
and I have downloaded a bunch of LMP cars to race with. There is no
other decent simulation of LMP racing for the PC. Conversions are also
available for Touring Cars, Rally cars, and even drag racing.
I also like Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. It's more arcadey, but
still a lot of fun.
My two cents,

There is absolutely no support by Ubisoft for F1RC. The statement is true,
it has faded out. The company doesn't want to support it's customers, it's
a shame. It had a bright future if many things would had been fixed, but it
did not. Therefore, it faded out.

Faded out of what? WTF are you two talking about? This is the type of sh*t
which ispires me to bust the (tiny) balls of some of you.
There's a hell of a lot more people sitting down to play F1RC on their
computers than there is for most sims.
Keep talking nonsense though.

When you show some respect, you'll be able to argue correctly. Or else, you
just lower yourself to George Ojeda or Derek Smart standards. I wrote that

The WWF has a ton of fans, too, but there's no accounting for taste!

Seriously, though, F1RC is good in its own right, but it's too similar
to F1WGP for me. That doesn't mean it's a lot of fun, but I've just
never found it to be terribly immersive or convincing as a simulation.
Your mileage may vary, of course.

Sadly it was stated months ago how Ubi fails to react to thier customers
needs past F1RS and they still maintain poor support. It doesnt surprise
me at all that Ubi just continues to *ignore* their customers. Then all the
discussions for 'fixing bugs' in f1rc just falls on *deaf ears*. phew what

Two additions to this list:
Need For Speed: Porshe Unleashed
NASCAR Heat
NASCAR Heat will undoubtedly give you the most bang for your buck of
any sim, save perhaps SCGT, which is getting a bit long in the tooth.
There are new tracks appearing for NASCAR Heat, and a TON of add-ons.
If you buy NASCAR Heat, you can download (for FREE) mods that will add
CART, IRL, Craftsman Truck, LeMans cars to the game, with more to
come.
You can't go wrong with this one.

DGF: something
GPL = Grand Prix Legends. (and it is the greatest racing game ever *grin*)
GPL is based on the 1967 Grand Prix season. It takes you back to the era of
no downforce, minimal safety, power sliding around the streets of Monaco,
and dicing with death going through the Masta Kink at Spa-Fracorchamps.
If you want to play GPL online, you will have to get a program called VROC.
It allows you to meet up with all the guys who race GPL and chat with them
before joining a server. It's also very easy to use.
Nascar 4 is also very good. It's much superior in looks, feel and fun than
Nascar 2000.
Colin McRae Rally 2 is great fun as far as rally games go.
If you want something a little more 'fun' instead of serious, go for Porsche
Unleaded, Viper Racing, Driver (getting old but still heaps of fun), and
Sports Car GT. They are all great fun without having to put lots of hours
of practice in to be good.
I'm sure there are more games out there that people are playing, but these
are the ones I've played and have kept playing from time to time. Hope this
helps you.

Yes, but you seem to like only one at a time David. Every one appearing the
greatest thing since sliced bread to you, to be enjoyed to the exclusion of
everything else (slight exaggeration).
I prefer my simming to have more scope.
