Black screens and crashes after motherboard and CPU upgrade

After fitting an MSI K8T Neo2 board and Athlon 64 3500+, a user got black screens and failures in games and eventually a system stuck at boot. Others pointed out he had not reinstalled Windows after the board swap. A repair install failed and he proceeded to reformat; advice also covered 64-bit XP driver availability.

Automated summary.

Some games after changes will require you to re-run the graphics setup. Have you tried that? Amy "V "fnugen"" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:IsS1f.9532$[email hidden]...

Oviously I can still surf and work on the desktop seeing how I can post here. Does it sound like my card is cooked? Yes I am aware of redoing my settings. After a long night of trying what I conclude as almost evrything, my system came down to the point of ONLY powering itself....it is stuck in "RTC" mode. Trying to read real time clock. Turns out that it may be an issue with the board. The board may be defective entirely as the chip would run at 83c when normally this chips runs no higher than 70c according to some support and tech sites. It's thanksgiving weekend in Canada, so I can't even contact the retailer until tuesday now..sucks, because now there is 3 days between purchase and contact. I really hope the video issue is attributed to a faulty board. thanks for the suggestion though.......but the video issue now seems the lessor of 2 evils. I had a llittle bit similar problem for months. My Ati 9600 XT Turbo worked for 30+ minutes and then just crashed. In some cases mouse moved and sounds were still playing, but couldnt control anything. It only happened in some new games that need a lot from adapter (GTR and BF2). I tried to change everything, starting from display drivers, added RAM memory etc. Finally I had help from one forum. I ran Everest software and some pro noticed from the report that although I had AGP adapter, my computer for some strange reason thought display adapter is running in PCI bus. With so, the computer ran display adapter memory bus on 1/4 of normal speed. I updated SIS motherboard AGP drivers and immediately it helped. No problems what so ever. After these problems I tested the card with a test software and got around 3400 points (before that, 1280). Cause I already was frustrated of the problem, I ordered a new computer (before the problem was solved) with AMD 4000+ and PCI-Express nVidia Gainward GS 7800 GT card. Well, have to say that I dont have a single game more, that couldnt be runned with 100% detail levels etc. Its great and together with the graphic detail level the computer is around 10 times faster than my older one (Intel 2.4 MHz with ATi 9600Pro Turbo). I wouldnt go for ATI anymore. Driver updates are a mess and it seems that at least those games I play, ATI has 10 times the problems than nVidia based adapters.Drivers are easy to update and you dont need different driver versions from different manufacturers with nVidia. For me - never ATI again! "V "fnugen"" <[email hidden]> kirjoitti viestiss:IsS1f.9532$[email hidden]...

Dumb question, but you *DID* reinstall your OS with a clean install, didn't you? You just gave your PC a brain trans-plant. Phil On Sun, 09 Oct 2005 00:25:27 -0400, "V \"fnugen\"" <[email hidden]> wrote:

What was the price on that setup? I'm looking to buy a new box myself. Thanks! Dave
Not a dumb question at all.........I ummmmmm, didn't. I know.......tried to cut a corner. Should have realized as soon as the "save time" phrase rattled through my head. LIVE AND LEARN !!! I got them for $471 CDN. Was the best deal I could get close by, and in stock items. I can't comment on the quality yet, as I haven't gotten that far. Problems arose. BUT.........I can't wait to find out how GTL runs, my ultimate goal, all the F1c mods 2nd then GTR. Verne

I paid 1400 euros for my set with 2 Gt RAM, Gainward GS 7800 GT and AMD 4000+ processor. I have to say that although Ive been in IT business for years, this is the first time I really have a MACHINE that works in games perfectly (for some months at least ;-) "Dave" <[email hidden]> kirjoitti viestiss:[email hidden]...

Yeah, kind of my lines of thinking. WHat have i got to lose by trying it, I had already reserved myself to a reformat.........so if that is then result, already in the mindset. I de believe it is old board driver issues. Doing a 3d config in F1c, I get a rating of "videoram=114" on a 9800pro. Ummmmmm, nuh-uh !!! Via 400 chipset from old board and VIA K8T800pro shipset on the new. Must be conflicts somewhere. I get a slide show on F1c when it used to be smooth and fluid, GTL........do NOT even ask....holy crap !!! I have updated and backdated the cat's as well......still same.........so repair and ultimately (by my figuring) reformat in near future. sucks, but oh well. Verne

During boot up you should get a message like "Press a key to boot from CD" Cheers! Remco

Ok, cool. That did it. I had walked away for a minute while booting expecting a prompt...my bad. My problem now, having never set an admin passwor, when it gets to that point in the repair menu, I hit enter and get the next C:\windows prompt........then it just sits there, is there some kind of command I am supposed to type ? I get stuck at that point now. thanks V

Thats the repair console. This may help ya a bit http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314058 Personally I've not had much luck saving an install in the repair console. Do you have your data backed up? Thats primarily what Ive used the console for then I do a fresh re-install of the OS after my data is safe. If youre data is safe already (as it should be) then do a clean install and be done. After you get xp setup nice then do a ghost or similar image for future headache savings ;) I dont feel right if I dont do a fresh install every 6 months anyway, hehe. I tried a repair and as much as I hoped, I got what was expected, same results. Now I am in the process of a reformat. Guess in the end I was resigned tio this. I used the "files and settings transfer" wizard to backup settings and some folders to my secondary drive. I hope I did it right.......never having used this wizard before, is transfering back just as easy? I have a large DAT file in my backup folder I created, do I double click that, or is it obvious what to do in reverse in the wizard? As far as ghosting my drive, I have serious video issues and that would just duplicate the same problems as originally trying to fix. I guess turning off system restore is a bad idea just to save some space?!?! Thanks again Verne "Mitch_A" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:1Yd3f.756$q%[email hidden]...

If you are already in Windows you can do it from there. Just go along like you are doing a new install until you get to the point that XP finds your old install. It will then ask you what you want to do with it. Select "R" for repair and go from there. It works almost all the time just fine. There are some cases that it will mess some things up, but I have always had very good luck. You will most likely have to do an online activation or even make a short phone call because of your new equipment but that is no biggie. You would have the same thing with a format and a reinstall.
