I'm trying to run GP3 2000 and it works fine... unless you want to
race more than once. If you try to race after you've finished a race
the track loads and the screen flicks to the graphics mode and stays
black. The computer needs to be reset.
I've got Win98, 256Mb Ram, P3 533, Hercules Prophet Ultra II and a
SoundBlaster Live!. I've got the most upto date drivers for the
hardware and I am running DX8.
I've checked the computer is not overheating and it is running very
cool.
This is the first game I've had problems with so far. Looking through
the readme on the disk it does not say it supports my 3D card. Is
there anything I can do?
If anybody has any ideas - pleeeeeaaase haylp!
Cheers,
Nathan

GP3 2000 black screen and whether it was worth buying
Nathan Nicholson's GP3 2000 hung with a black screen when starting a second race, which he blamed on his graphics card. redTed refused to help because he felt the add-on should have been a free patch, starting a debate about paying for updates, with others arguing the price was fair. Several confirmed that GP3 2000 randomly asks for the original GP3 CD.
Automated summary.

Sorry, can't help you there. Runs fine on my system (Athlon 1.4ghz, v3

Was gp3 working properly before you installed the season 2000 update?

It may not sound like it but I do have a good idea of what I'm doing.
The crash is obviously to do with the graphics card (I've pretty much
ruled out everything else) and I've tried everything I can (slowing
down performance, updating drivers, tweaking settings, etc).

Sorry about that.
I just saw it in the shops the other day and was a little bitter at the
thought of paying again for something that I already paid for. I should
really have taken it out on the publisher.
Won't happen again, until they bring out the F1RC update !
So you don't buy 'updates' - even if they are amazingly good? A strange
attitude. I presume then you didn't buy ICR2, N2, N3, N4, GP2, GP3, GP3
2000, F1CS, MGPRS2.......... and many other 'updates'. I presume you also
will not be buying F1 2001, F1RC2, GP4, and all the other up and coming
'updates'!

Yes Iain, I find the "not prepared to pay for something that _should_ have
been included" attitude hard to understand. How do we determine what should
be included a product for sale on the open market? We can specify what we
want for sure. Car manufacturers will respond to the public desires by
constantly updating & improving their models, but not retrospectively for
purchasers of previous models.
Dear Mr Rickard, come & have air con fitted for nothing as we include it on
the standard model now.
Oh, and we have updated the suspension as well following customer feedback,
bring it in...
Why should enhancements be free? Sure if the there were major faults a patch
is good PR. Otherwise we have to wait for full releases every few years.
Personally I quite liked the ICR1 approach. Early release with 8 tracks. Add
a track expansion pack, add the Indy 500 as an add-on once the licensing was
sorted and it was ready, with the paint kit chucked in as well. Each release
offers the chance to include any patches in the meantime. Ok, this was
before the days of the third party add ons we get today that address the
paintkit stuff and common availability of patches via the internet, but it
still allowed a steady enhancement path for the game.
I'd rather get frequent updates than wait for massive releases, but I guess
I'm just impatient.
Cheers

Nascar2, 3 and 4 were add-ons ? I never knew that. Cheers.
I won't be buying F1RC2. Correct.
I didn't buy F1CS.
If you want to encourage developers and publishers to release bug ridden
games, you're going about it the right way.
Sequels and add-ons are a little different, don't you think ?
Actually, I think you'll find that I didn't ever use the term 'add-ons', I
used your term 'update' - subtle difference.
I think you'll find that most of the sims we all use and talk about have
contained various bugs and usually several patched are released to address
these problems.
So you didn't buy F1CS, well, that was a mistake as it was a big leap
forward from F12K. I deduce then that you bought everything else on the
list. in that case then clearly you do buy 'updates'.

to a buggy release than a new release.
GP4 is what we should all be paying our money for when released -
apparently ;-)

You assume right, I did buy everything else on the list. I didn't get F1CS
because I was quite happy with the first one. I would like to know what the
major improvements were. I might just pick that one up.
As for the updates/add-ons, whatever we are calling them. If they work
without needing the original game, then that's quite ok by me. From what
I've been told you still need the original GP3 to use the update. That's a
rip-off in my book.

Even if not, I don't see the rip-off. Here for example the Dutch prices:
GP3 1 year ago: dfl 99,-
GP3 now: dfl 25,- or less
GP3 2000 Season: dfl 50,-
So even if one has to buy both, still only dfl 75,- Less than the original
1 year ago, and the sim has been updated in a number of areas. Dfl 75,- is
also less than is charged for most new games, which is fair since GP3 2000
is not entirely new.
Btw, the original GP3 is only needed during install of GP3 2000 Season, not
everytime it is used.

Every 5th time I start GP3 2000 I have to insert the original GP3 cd

Cannot confirm that Andre. Just started it 5 times, plus some other times
today and yesterday and it did not ask for the GP3 cd except during
installation. (I do need the GP3 2000 Season cd in the drive, but I did not
yet look for a no cd patch.)

It does it on my UK version to. Completely randomly unless I can't
find the GP3 disk - it wants it every time then ;-)

You should just install the NOCD patch to avoid the hassle.
