Unofficial DirectX 8.1 download and graphics card loyalties

Txl posted an unofficial link to an interim DirectX 8.1 build and was challenged for not using Microsoft's site, though he noted it was not yet officially released. Discussion moved to whether 8.1 helped, then to graphics card loyalties, with arguments that Nvidia had beaten 3dfx with better products. Posters also traded tips on running GPL in OpenGL versus the Direct3D patch on GeForce cards.

No good reason ever? How about being able to play your favorite games using your graphics board? Microsoft hardcoded support of various features to specific named chipsets knowing that boards not released at the time of DX8.0a would probably have support for those same features. Txl... Evidently you've been a "beta tester" of DX 8.1? Or have followed its development. Can you give us some information about "why" we'd want to install it? This is a serious question....not trying to bust your chops for posting an *unofficial* MS source site for it (who cares anyway). By the way, I don't blame you for getting a little p.o'd at some of these posts. If someone (me) is running N4 and GPL on a GF2-ULTRA and GF3....all on high-end AMD platforms....is there a good reason to run DX 8.1 now? This could be helpful information for many trying to make a decision about this. Thanks in advance for your information. Regards, Tom

Hello I think Dx 8.0a still has a lot of bugs, i have tried "unoffically" the dx 8.1 beta and after a while it just got "expired" and I had to run 8.1 "unlimited". I think it is always best to get the latest release even if the performance is the same, if you install a future game (like WSC ha ha ha) and it uses the "enhancements" of dx 8.1 (whatever they might be) then you are already up to date on this.... Besides that I STRONLGY recommend the 21.81 nvidia drivers.... "Tom Pabst" <[email hidden]> a crit dans le message de news: %56s7.46506$L%[email hidden]...

Supposedly DX 8.0 has 320 bugs in it. I have used 8.1 till it expired, then went back to 8.0, (shrugs shoulders) didn't notice any difference. Couldn't get the download from the site above, (either to busy or MS shut it down). >"I STRONLGY recommend the 21.81 nVidia drivers...." Why? Personally I think NVIDIA (GeFarce) is crap, Voodoo or OpenGL is much better IMAO. Looks great in Unreal Tournament, but.......................... The next video card that I may buy will either be a high end OpenGL card or Maybe a Matrox card. I remember running Nascar 1 with a Matrox Card using the specific exe for the Matrox card and it looked pretty good for the time. "Set the wayback machine to 1995 Sherman" Anybody in RAS use a Matrox Card? -- R.I.P. - William Joseph Dunlop OBE MBE 2/25/52 - 7/2/2000
Last I heard, they are backing away from the gaming market and focusing on business purchasers. Not that their products won't run games, but the drivers won't be updated for game compatibility etc. Matrox makes a great product, but like Rendition & 3dfx, they allowed the marketplace to pass them by. If I was a gamer and choosing a new vid card, a Matrox product would be my 3rd or 4th choice. dave henrie "REDLINE426" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:74ks7.20024$[email hidden]... > Supposedly DX 8.0 has 320 bugs in it. I went through just about all the 3dfx and nvidia chipsets. 3dfx had a head start, then nvidia opened a can of whup-ass on 3dfx and killed them - with better product. No other vendor has maintained a position at the top of the performance curve. The nvidia viper era hardware was crap, TNT was adequate, GeForce and up is excellent. 3dfx were in slow motion and got left behind. The drivers have always been the weakest link for nvidia (and the slow development of directx). The 21.81 drivers with Windows XP are working very well on my PC - both directx and OpenGL work great in GPL. Keith.

There were two versions of an unsupported beta patch that used to be at Papy.com for opengl. However, I have generally got the feeling that most of the non-3dfx folks have found the performance and visual quality of the d3d patch to be better than the opengl. As always, everybody perceives things a-little differently. dave henrie "Rich" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I tried to use this and in D3D had a frame drop to 22fps (steady as a rock so to speak.) Usually get 36's. I run in 800x with a TNT M64 on Win98 using an Athlon 900 & 128mb ram. OpenGL ran okay, but the menus got all screwy (the drop down prob.) If I try to go up any futher (say 1024x everthing bogs down and menus get REALLY screwy.) So I had to delete the detonators and reinstall. Back to normal. Is this just a prob for my benefit or others had the same thing? Book. Alan, I do not have the problem you mention, running Windows XP with the 21.81 drivers (Athlon 1.4G, GeForce2 GTS 32M, 1G SDRAM, iwill kk266-r, blablabla). Both d3d and OpenGL work fine with GPL, and I also find the OpenGL to be better quality. The d3d has anti aliasing turned on, which makes the menu text fuzzy.
