Reactions to the 2001 US Grand Prix at Indianapolis
Tom Pabst teasingly asked why nobody was bashing F1 after the US Grand Prix. Posters criticised traction control sounds, the twisty infield and ABC's commentary, while race attendees reported plenty of passing and praised a sensational finish. There was also debate about whether sim racers could match real F1 drivers, citing Mark Webber quickly lapping GPL on a simulator.

OK, I'll bite - the cars sounded absolutely pathetic through the infield
section with the traction control kicking in repeatedly. The rasping
sound of automotive flatulence echoed through the mighty speedway....

Yeah, I actually think the oval part of the track is one of the cooler

Yes... Completely ugly. The Porsches were more fun to watch off of T7 than the
F1 rides.
But...
Yes the infield portion of the track is a drag and could use a few changes and
an extra mile, but I see more passes coming off of the long frontstretch than
I see anywhere else at other GPs. Go Juan!

How could you sleep with all that "real racing" going on in Kansas over
on NBC.....huh?
And, while we are on the topic........
a. Neilson released its viewing-share figures this morning........the
NASCAR telecast "TV commercials" had a higher viewing-share than the
entire F1 race. I guess we just aren't sophisticated enough here in the
USA to appreciate real pace lapping....ah, errr....I mean, real racing?
b. How did Ferrari manage to lose? I can't seem to find any reference
to this phenomenon, anywhere!
c. Why were there only 22 cars? Could F1 manage to bring a
full-race-field next year.....maybe? Where were the rest of the F1
teams and cars?
d. Why does F1.....with the "greatest drivers in the world".....need
traction control, launch control, etc.?
e. The great "Shu" quotes from the USGP weekend (paraphrased):
1. "We enter the oval at such a low speed that the car
never comes close to its limits, its basically a rest and relax period
of the lap around Indy."
2. On the same weekend he also says, "There's too little
grip on the infield portion of the track. With little rubber laid down,
the tight corners and slow speeds.....our traction control and downforce
are not useful. We actually have to drive the race car during that
portion of the lap and its very disconcerting, to say the least."
You have got to be kidding me or something? This...is what comes
out of the mouth of the driver, some say...is the greatest F1 driver of
all time? Jimmy Clark and others must be turning over in their graves!
I would like to make a hypothetical wager:
"Give "Shu Baby" the finest simulation equipment in the
world.....and 48-hours to practice in it running GPL. Then, pit him
against any VROC driver chosen at random from the VROC chat room.....at
any GPL track chosen at random." Shu will lose 90% of the time!
VROC has the best drivers in the world......certainly not F1.
However, all of this is just my opinion.

Tom

Not telecast live here...
No comment, just that Indy wasn't the worst of the season, at least there is
one high-speed stretch into tightish corner left. Most tracks have now been
modified in order to be void of overtaking opportunities. ;-(
> b. How did Ferrari manage to lose? I can't seem to find any
> reference to this phenomenon, anywhere!
1) Barichello got held up after his 1st stop.
2) His engine broke in an attempt to make up for that near the end.
3) Mika got passed MS by staying out longer and putting in a couple quick
laps before pitting (I think).
> c. Why were there only 22 cars? Could F1 manage to bring a
> full-race-field next year.....maybe? Where were the rest of
> the F1 teams and cars?
There are only 22 F1 cars (11 teams). The FIA put their foot down after a
period where more teams were allowed and some of them "embarrassed the
sport" by going bankrupt. Now one needs a totally ridiculous amount of
kapital and budget to be allowed to run an F1 team. Toyota will add two cars
to the field next year to form a total of 24.
There's also the problem of "our" tracks. They were built when an F1 team
brought a truck and possibly a tent or a caravan. Now they're stretched to
bursting with the amount of equipment and exhuberant hospitality
installation each teams brings along... there just isn't room for more
unless they locate the lesser teams off-site. I see this happening in the
not so distant future. ;-(
> d. Why does F1.....with the "greatest drivers in the world"...
> need traction control, launch control, etc.?
Most motorsport enthousiasts are scratching their heads over that one. Stay
tuned.
> e. The great "Shu" quotes from the USGP weekend (paraphrased):
> 1. "We enter the oval at such a low speed that the

Agree here, the transition into the oval should flow more in order to allow
for more speed to be carried. Trap speeds of around 240-245mph would have
been more interesting as this is beyond the normal design envelope for an
F1.
> 2. On the same weekend he also says, "There's too

He means they cannot push the cars through that section, even with all their
gizmos, and are therefore reduced to merely "driving" the car through there
(as opposed to racing). It is indeed a sad state of affairs that the
technical rules/cars are hampering the racer in the exercise of his craft in
F1, but you won't get an "F1 fan" to agree with you.

They've been imitating a rotisserie for quite some time now, IMO.
48 hours would be a little short for him to re-train his synapses, that
would be unfair. But no doubt he would lose at least half the time, even if
given ample time to adjust.
> VROC has the best drivers in the world......certainly not F1.

This is where it's great to live in Canada. TSN carried the British

Except Heidfeld is German.
"For all their emphasis on European drivers..." ;o)
And their constant "requests" to the US TV producer (who obviously couldn't
hear them) to see more of Montoya and Barrichello, when the camera was
following M Schumacher etc.
"For all their emphasis on international drivers..." :oD
To be fair they do commentate a lot (too much) on Jensen and Eddie etc,
Heidfeld is/was a point of particular interest as he'd qualified up n past
the McLarens, and has been leapfrogged to a seat next to Coulthard next year
by a clearly inferior driver (Reikkonen). So it was a good story to follow.

Let Jim Clark play GPL for 3 weeks and he would probably come to the same

Give him as much time as those guys have had and he would mop the floor with
them. He's not where he is because of luck or money.
VROC drivers can practice without fear - they can push the limits in their
spare time without any dramatic consequences.
> VROC has the best drivers in the world......certainly not F1.
Anyone who devotes so much time to GPL has to be lacking a certain amount of
intelligence - intelligence that's almost certainly needed to be competitive
in F1.
> However, all of this is just my opinion.
noted.
No F1 bashing here. But I was very displeased with the coverage on ABC. The
only thing that makes F1 interesting to me is all the strategy. I do at
times find the races boring. The pitstops, and the laps the drivers do,
while others are pitting is to me very entertaining. ABC seems to have
missed this aspect of F1. The stategy is what seperates F1 from CART in my
opinion. I would have been just as well off to turn the sound completely
off, as I had to figure out what was going on by myself anyway.
So, now I will not be so pissed off to watch F1 at 6:30 in the morning any
more, at least Speedvision has decent coverage.
I thought the same thing! You had 2 guys that knew of F1(Jenkins and
Cheaver), and one that sounded like he didn't have a clue(Priestly).

That race did get pretty dreary, but they have made the track 1/2 a
mile too short for a good race. Compare with Germany before...
That said, that was one hell of a final few laps. For a race with so
little overtaking, the end was sensational.

Who cares, really? It's not important, I still don't see the fuss about
bringing F1 back into America. Corporate America already backs up F1 as
much as it can. The USGP is just a test-bed for Bernie, he can take a
chance of giving an F1 date to the USofA while he slowly builds up the need
for F1 in Asia.

Nice trolling attempt, but your bait just sank directly onto the bottom of

Wouldn't say directly Francois... I hesitated at least a split second on
whether to dignify his statement with an answer. <g>

He sure did pass someone for the lead. He passed Barrachello
as he went in for his 2nd pitstop :-)
Also the Jaguars started in the rear of the field (14th) and Irvine
finished 5th. I suppose you are going to claim there was no passing
there either?

I was at the race (right by the S/F line across from the podium).
But I recorded all of the speedvision stuff and the ABC race
broadcast. I just got done with the speedvision stuff and will
watch the race tonight. The speedvision guys did interview
Bob Jenkins, and he admitted he was freaking out because
he had no idea what was going on in F1 these days. So he
was trying to do a crash course. I suspect one of us could
have done better :-)

I wonder how many cars the Jag actually passed. Other than using the pits
as you mentioned Mika over Ruebens. Still it seems that Cosworth is
finally generating some decent power again. Watch out for Arrows next year.

only if you consider 22 cars a full field. Nascar allows 43 and usually
several others are sent home when they couldn't qualify fast enough. The
Indy 500 itself has 33 cars. So.....22 seems a-bit light to Nascar-bred
Americans.

Or rather, that traction control has always been there, they couldn't
police it, so they now allow it. Break the rules often enough and the
transgressions BECOME the rules.

I accept it's "our" (Britain) fault for building what seems to be a
fundamentally flawed oval circuit (should have just repaved Brooklands ;) )
but by the time the interesting two? laps at the end happened I'd already
woke up and done something else.
I should point out I was watching it on TV in the middle of Sunday
afternoon, not at some ungodly hour!

I've read all the interviews on several F1 sites and have seen nothing even
remotely like this. I like the way you say it's paraphrased, yet put it in
quotes. Sounds like you supplied your own biased interpretation
here..Please point us to the actual quote so we can see what Schumacher
actually said.
I'm sure you are right (about the VROC drivers beating Schumacher in GPL),
and that would prove absolutely nothing about Schumacher's ability to drive
a real car, only his lack of experience in moving pixels around on a
computer monitor. By your reasoning, you could take the same VROC drivers
and put them in Schumacher's Ferrari, give them 48 hours, and they would
post laps faster than Schumacher's 90% of the time. And even you are not
foolish enough to believe that.
A while back, you posted one of your long-winded manifestos calling on
everyone to stop talking about GPLRank and (shudder) hot lapping because
you were afraid that some real drivers might stumble upon this newsgroup
and not take us as seriously as you take yourself. I think they are far
more likely to dismiss sim racers in general, and you in particular, after
reading your above nonsense.
But that's just my opinion,

I was lucky enough to get tickets at turn 1 this year and saw LOTS of passing -
Barrichello on Montoya, Montoya on Schumacher, Alesi passing both Bennetons
simultaneously(!), Irvine on Heidfeld, and much more.
Yeah, the Arrows with a Cosworth motor could be interesting next year.
F1-live.com are speculating that Frentzen might replace Bernoldi at Arrows in
'02.

I was actually making a pretty near "tongue in cheek" set of
remarks.....but you answered them with large amounts of
"seriousness".....and some excellent logic and points. Now I think
people won't mostly realize I was kidding around.
Your reply was quite refreshing......"thank you." And, that's being

No, I have not. What do you know?
I just can dissociate the past from the present.

Even though Tom's wasn't a serious post, I totally disagree with
everyone's belief that VROC drivers could beat Shuey. There was a post
2 years ago where Mark Webber tested GPL on a hyperstimulator at the
Aust. GP. Mark had never been in a hyperstim or seen GPL, but he was
lapping Monza in 1:30's after only 6 laps! Give Schuey a day and he
would be more than competitive in my view, he would surprise a lot.
I'm sure the world record holders would beat him at first, but with a
bit of time...
Rafe Mc
They'd have to run some serious wing over the last hill to keep from landing over in Lake Lanier without that chicane! And I can't
see Bernie liking the looks of that pit wall outside the final turn either. But - cresting that sucker at the speeds they'd be
doing would make Eau Rouge look like a cakewalk.
SB
Off to the races - Star Mazda and Indy Lights today (their 1st time there), Petit Lemans tomorrow. Yum.

Irvine passed a whole lot of cars down the main straight.
He would draft close as they passed my seat location
and would get them at 1.
The thing I was thrilled about was the fact that the race was
not a parade with the first car into turn 1 winning the race.
Also I recorded the ABC coverage of the race. The only
accurate part that I could tell was when Eddie Cheever
(total back marker while in F1) told everyone that F1
*IS* the pinnacle of autoracing engineering. Bob Jenkins
and Josh whatever his name is in the pits were totally
clueless. They treated the race like a nascar or irl race.
"Duh, hey we heard that your engine is going to blow up
care to comment?" and running over to get an update on
the blistered tires...
I was shocked that they did have the F1 team radio
comms in the telecast. I guess when Bernie's F1
management does the race you get the cool stuff.

We've never gotten the fancy stuff over here in the States. I think the

enhancements.
