Well, I've just got F1 2001 and my first impressions are very poor!
1) Sound is terrible. Tyre sounds are like static, skidding sounds like a
scraping sound, engines sound like demented bees!
2) Graphics are very poor. Looks like a cartoon - very unreal and overly
filtered - whether running @ 1280 or 640. Frame rate seems OK at any res,
EXCEPT for the fact that every 5 seconds or so everything looks and feels
like travelling through treacle for 1-2 seconds.
3) Control seems to be almost nil. My Ferrari FF wheel despite trying
several settings just doesn't seem to be able to drive the car! The back end
comes round if you breath too hard, and braking of any description just
causes instability. There is no feeling of being in touch with the car at
all.
4) Menus have a very irritating sound which comes up when hovering over any
button.
5) Having tried about 10 quick races at Imola, only about 4-5 cars finish
each time. Can't give any assessment of AI because I am unable to race in
any way competitively for previous reasons.
6) Mirrors don't work at all!
7) There is no FF! Despite the deadlines no doubt set by EA, there is no
excuse for this. They could have used the (less than perfect) FF from F1CS.
8) Twice now, the graphics corrupt at the start of a race, and make it
unplayable.
I really hope that there is something fundamentally wrong somewhere, as I
have only scratched the surface. God knows what else I'll find. If things
don't improve in a couple of days, then it's going back.
GP3 2000, F1RC (despite some AI probs) and even F12KCS have nothing to worry
about from F1 2001.
Shall we wait for the patch?
(BTW I'm running on 1.4 Athlon, GF2 Ultra, 21.80 Dets on XP, 512Mb RAM)

Poor first impressions of F1 2001, later reversed
Iain Mackenzie gave very poor first impressions of F1 2001, criticising its sound, graphics, frame rate and menus. Others replied that the newest Nvidia 21.xx drivers caused the problems and recommended older drivers or windowed mode, and a side argument broke out over downgrading drivers. After switching drivers Mackenzie said F1 2001 was becoming his favourite modern F1 sim, though the lack of force feedback remained a complaint.
Automated summary.
Hey, just picked it up, and it least your wheel WORKS. Even though I have a
old cheap wheel (Wingman Formula GP) it won't recognize my gas paddle,
unless I don't assign any settings then my gas is always on. If there isn't
some fix soon, I believe mine's going back as well.

Try going backwards on yer drivers. The 21.xx Dets are more for the GF3 (a
GF2 Pro should kick major gluts w. this game). I've heard of good results
w. F1 2001 & 7.52, 7.58, 8.04 & 12.41 Dets.

Framerate is OK but sometimes it does give some strange feeling when driving

The menu's suck BIGtime! Have you tried typing? On a multiplayer-game, try

Hi Iain,
That's not a good news. I don't race GP3 anymore because I can't get it configure resolutions
for my Elsa Gladiac Ultra (I'm running P3 500 on Win2K (SP2), 21.81 Detonator, Dx8a)
I was hoping until GP4 shows up that I could live with F1 2001 don't tell me it's like F1 2000...
how is the graphics compared to F1 2000 ? Car handeling ? How is AI compared to F1 2000
(F1 2000 AI = What AI ? I haven't anything remotly that looks like AI)

I just didn't buy it until I upgraded my PC to a GeForce card.
I said it then and I'll say it now: I am NOT going to downgrade video
drivers to run one specific game when all the other games on my HD run
BETTER with the new drivers than with the old. I just won't buy that
specific game. Developers who blame it on the driver should talk to the 20
other development houses whose games work fine. It's not the driver's fault.

You said everything i wanted to say.
I spent an hour trying to get mirrors to work.
Only hope time will improve things I usually hate a new sim the first time I
try it.
I think the physics are spot on but the controler input just does not seem
right.
Just a few early immpresions dont want to say to much more just yet

As far as I can tell he downgraded his drivers when he installed the 20.XX
versions, being a completely pointless exercise in itself!
cheers

For better video performance, try running in windowed mode -- set the
parameter in the config.ini file to "1" (instead of "0"). This is a
known problem with newer Detonator drivers.
You might also want to visit the High Gear forums -- a LOT of people
over there disagree with most of your assessment, it seems, including
a lot of F1RC, GP3, and GPL fans.

You said it, Rob.
Dale.
Sorry, you're very wrong there. The 21.81 (not 20.xx) drivers were a big
leap forward from the 12.90s I was previously using on everything except F1
2001.

Nonsense!! the 21.821 drivers have been a big improvement on my GF2 Ultra
in everything else. It's a F1 2001 problem.

Disagree-- can't see how any of the above reasons could be the reason for
your being "unable to race in any way competitive", except for reason three.

bit.

Seeing that it appears that you are wanting desparately to find things wrong
with F1 2001-- my suspicion is that you're a GPL snob-- I have no doubt that
you will find things. Oveall, I think most of your complaints have nothing
to do with the way the game plays as a simulation.

I'm running on XP also. I've not noticed what you've noticed, especially
with the graphic's gliches.

That's really too bad since F1 2000 Cs is not all that great. Here's hoping
for 2002!

Me! for one. You ever try a racing game on a FFB wheel when there are
no forces? No? Well, it sucks - to put it bluntly.

I have FF turned off in SCGT and F1CS2K because it is so bad in those
games. All I could ever feel were bumps and collisions, there was no
centering feel, no change in stiffness due to weight transfer, no loss
of aligning torque when you exceed the traction limit. In short, none
of the things that make FF worth having in a racing sim. So I for one
am glad to see that the crappy FF will not be back in F1 2001. The fact
that they didn't put FF in the PC release means we won't get it until
they are satisfied that they have done it right. As for using an FF
wheel without forces, it's very simple to do. In those games I have
turned on a centering spring in the wheel's profiling software, and they
work just fine that way. Plus unlike a non-FF wheel you can tune the
stiffness to your liking. Perhaps your wheel has that capability too.

think his comments were directed at Iain. I don't think Iain has had much
experience with GPL and his GF2/21.xx Det combo; a lot of people including
me had trouble there and went back to the earlier drivers. He seems miffed
at the VERY IDEA that the latest drivers aren't giving him the best
performance.
The other point seems to be that he'd rather have bad FF than no feedback at
all. One of the F1 2001 designers seemed acutely embarrassed at the FF
implementation in F1CS and said he'd rather have no FF than bad FF,
promising a patch to solve the problem later on. Of course, a lot of people
are still waiting for the patch for F1 2000. The only FF I've seen (or
felt) that does anything to help you drive the car is Papy's (in GPL & N4),
altho the implementation in Mobil 1 Rally Championship was near-great--I
loved how *all* feeling went away when you were skating across a patch of
the dreaded Black Ice (no, not the firewall).

These "first impression" reviews are sometimes based on surface things, like
menus and menu sounds and a few crashes here and there. And oftentimes
enough they are based on reviewers' emotional attachments to other similar
type games, in this case GP3 and GPL.
But what a person likes or dislikes, using these likes and dislikes as a
basis for a "first impressions", is up to the person. The only thing is
that I don't think others should shy away from getting a game just because
one person, based on personal preferences and biases, says the game is no
good.
I myself, from a few spins with the game, think it's looking like a pretty
nice title. I do notice some pauses in the video, which may be driver or
system related. The sounds to me are fine, framerates are good, and overall
the feeling of the game is excellent.

LOL! Should have known you'd be making an appearance somewhere in this

Hey, speaking of which, have the guys who did CART2K said anything about
doing a CART mod for F1 2001?

Took the words right out of my mouth Bart. FF in GP3 is by far the best of
any MODERN F1 sim. Put your foot down too much in 1st or 2nd and get that
fight with the wheel!

Where did GPL come into this??? I know this is RAS, but that's taking ot a
bit too far!!!! You mean F1 2001 obviously. Well, see another post from me
on the difference it made getting rid of the 21.81 drivers.

Ian, we are both GP3 fans, so we have a similar starting point.

The engine sound is better than F1RC, and we all know default sounds
are bad anyway. These will be easy to fix. I kinda liked the skid
sound.

I thought the graphics were ok, albeit cartoony. There is a tick box
for FSAA, and setting that did bring on the glitch. I turned that
off, and turned FSAA on for the card, and it seemed ok. This is 1024,
high car and track, everything else medium. The Ferrari steering
wheel in the cockpit was very nice. The driver arms are pretty weird.

Yeah, you get that floaty feeling that was bad but not as noticeable
in F12K. I am still working on settings that will allow me to put the
car where I want it. Not even close yet.
That is curious, same here. There is a place to turn them on, but it
doesn't make any difference. Tied into framerate somehow? I noticed
that some video changes would result in red graphics, telling you (I
guess) that this was too high for your card as benchmarked (which it
does at the setup).

None. Not even the imaginary FF of F12K. I cannot comprehend this.

I have not had that problem...yet.

I'm waiting for a while to see how the mods change things. But,
without FF, it will never be played.

No. Wait for the real developers: the guys doing the mods.

733/GTS/128 here. Latest det drivers are no problem here, except for
the FSAA snafu.

I also have a non-FFB wheel, conveniently neglected to mention that

Perhaps your wheel has that capability too. Thanks Steve but I've seen that article before and it isn't particularly
useful. It doesn't include anything to do with the 21.81s which is what the
F1 2001 debate is all about.
All that article confims is that the 12.90s are the best of the rest and
I've known that for some time now. I've tried and tested a lot of the
drivers over the last year!
Until the 21.81 set was released I've always used the 12.90s.
The reason I changed to 21.81 is because they are XP compatible and that is
what I use. In everything I use I saw the benefits of the 21.81s especially
2D stuff, UNTIL F1 2001 came along. Basically it just doesn't work properly
with the 21.81s.
But, as I said in one of my posts, reverting back to the 12.90s has fixed
all the problems.
Incidentally I get around 4500 on 3DBenchamrk 2001 with the 12.90s and 4650
with the 21.81s.

testing days yet!

Do you own any EA(racing) titles? Just curious.

I have problems in GPL and N4 with the 21.81 drivers on a Geforce 2 GTS in
W98. In GPL, when I race Kyalami online, about half way the track triangles
and planes show up. It doesn't happen when I first start an offline race and
then go to Kyalami online from the same instance of GPL.
In N4, I got the same problem rightaway in offline racing. In both cases
going back to the 12.90 drivers cured it.
So F1 2001 is not alone in this respect....

Iain,
Windows XP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No WONDER yer F1 2001 doesn't work. What did
you expect from an OS built for MS Office, not players of The One True
Calling--racing games--? (At least you found F1 2001; I'm still looking.)

It is stable, looks good, has lots of extra bells and whistles, and I get a
better 3DMark 2001 score than ME. The 21.81 drivers for XP as I've said,
are excellent in everything else except F1 2001.
I noticed last night that 21.85s have been leaked and some people are
reporting very good things from them. If I've got the mental strength I'll
try them later!

wouldn't be aware of the fact that they have to install older drivers to get
it to work properly. 21.85s have been leaked, I'll try them later.
F1 2001 is rapidly becoming my favoutite modern F1 sim! I can't really find
any major faults now!

Know what you mean Dave, but they are not as bad as some are making out.
anyway, absolute track accuracy is down my list of priorities. I'd rather
have a sim that drives and feels good, is a challenge in a race, and looks
good as a bonus with some inaccuracy on tracks, than one which feels like a
dog but has every kerb millimetre perfect!

Contrary to what one person said here, I actually enjoy the sounds as well.
The progressively louder wind sound as speed increases is a nice touch.

You are definitely missing out on this one, it is truly awesome, I REALLY
don't know where Iain's complaints come from, nearly all the points he
raised aren't in my F1 2001.

For a real whitewash of XP (from a gamer's perspective) go to:
http://www.gamepc.com/reviews/hardware_review.asp?review=windowsxp&page=1&ms
cssid=&tp=
but notice even these apologists couldn't get XP to outrun ME on any but one
of dozens of benchmarks.
Stable? Yes.
Suitable as a gaming platform? Not yet....
