Hi guys..
Ok, none of this sensationlist: GPL rules, everything else sucks. I just
want honest opinions.
Is F1 2001 worth getting? better than F1 2000 CS?
Personally, I liked all of them, and GP3, but I'm also love GPL (have been
since it came out), but I do get sick of hearing the GPL will never be
beaten crap.
Honest opinions need apply only... ;0)))

Honest opinions on whether F1 2001 is worth buying
James Pickard asked for honest views on F1 2001 without GPL elitism. Most owners, including Phil Lee of Legends Central, said it felt right and was the best modern F1 sim despite no force feedback, praising its AI, sound and frame rate once driver issues were fixed. Fixes discussed included older Nvidia drivers, matching desktop resolution and running FRAPS, and Joe Marques compared PS2 F1 titles, saying EA's version won.
Automated summary.

I got F1 2001 on Friday and wasn't able to drive it until this afternoon. I
have already put in more laps in it then in GP3 and F1 CS2K combined. For
the first time since GP2 I have a modern F1 sim that I want to put in the
time to learn properly. For some reason it just feels right, even without
FF.

Okay, I honestly don't have it yet.

Ok, for a change here's my honest opinion :)
Quick first impressions were great. Before I installed it I allready
read about the problems with various drivers, and about the
run-it-in-a-window-or-use-fraps trick, so when I started it the game
run very smooth. In ever way it's an improvement over f1cs. Better
graphics, better fps, GREAT sound, AI seems to be very good (didn't
test it enough though), variable weather is very good, and I love how
bumpy the tracks are, fasten your seatbelts extra tight when you drive
on Brazil :)
Buuuuut there's one problem. The control of the car didn;t feel right
to me. I had problems with steering, way to much oversteer, so much
that I had to allmost before a corner before I could enter it.
In the corner itself I had to constantly adjust the steering to keep
the line. Braking also wasn't good, one time I braked perfectly before
a corner, on the next lap my brakes hardly seemed to function.
I spend a day on messing with my controller settings.. tried every
possible combination of sensitivity and deadzone settings, but to no
avail. The car remains crap to drive. I also tried settings from other
players who don't have these controller problems, but they also
didn;'t help. For now I gave up and deinstalled F1 2001, it's
completely unplayable for me at this time. Hope someone finds a
solution for this..
Oh, with a couple of guys from VROC we tried multiplayer.
We were with 5 or 6 players. We had a couple of problems.
It happened twice to me that I started at -exact- the same spot as
another player, once in the pitbox, once at the start of a race.
This resulted ofcourse in a major crash (of our cars, not the game).
But worse, and this happend a couple of times to several players:
First lap of the race - I was driving, nothing specaculair going on,
some cars far behind me and some cars in front of me, and suddenly the
cam switched to outside view, a moving tv-cam. I could still control
my car. After a couple of seconds, without warning I was back in the
chatroom. I can't think of any reason why this would happen, so I
think this is a major bug, especially since it happend a couple of
times.
Besides this, the driving was reasonable fine. The cars were all
warping quite a bit, but this could have been because of a bad
connection, allthough the host and most of the players were on a fast
cable connection.
So all in all, it seems that the basis of f1 2001 is a very good sim,
but as long as I can't get the controllers work correct I can't judge
it.. I never liked GP3, untill I got the controller setting correct,
and since then I love it. I hope the same will happen with f1 2001..

I've put in about 6 hours now, and I am simply amazed..Sure no FF is a
drawback, but the AI, SOUND - Amazing on my SB Audigy, and Framerate are
unbelieveable. The default setup's on the car are very pushy, but with some
tweaking, I got it really nice...I did a 100% race at Spa, and was in second
for at leaset 20 laps, full out, right behind Shuey, totally unable to
pass(got him on the pitstop tho.). The only unrealistic part of the AI I
find is the amount of cars falling out of the race, at the end of a long
race, there are only usually 6 or 7 cars left running...I also noticed that
they had implemented the Williams-Mich tire wear.. During a race Montoya
will run average for the first 5 - 10 laps.. then he(and Ralph) will start
to fly, and click in fastest laps.. then they will start to trail off.. The
Ferrari's will get faster and faster as the fuel load lightens.
They also seemed to have modeled a dirty track very nicely... At the
beginning of practice, the car is very slippery.. 2 - 3 laps into the run,
you get great grip.. after a pitstop, the grip is mostly good(tire temps)...
Amazing. Can't wait for the FF patch.

'fixed' it by NOT overclocking. I had my Piii500 overclocked to 549 or
something close by using SoftFsb. The menu's even had hesitations.
Everytime my mouse would move over a menu item, it would stutter and echo.
During a race the stutters would get worse and worse, even with all detail
off and screen rez reduced.
I don't remember why I tried with reducing the overclocking, probably
testing the pedal fix from Microsoft for dx8a, but I did and the stutter
disappeared. I can go up to 515mhz but the next step up brought on the
stutters. Unfortunately, I don't know if it was just the chip speed
difference or the reduction of the agp multiplyer that cured the
stutters..But it was sound related combined with overclocking.

This is a widely report problem with the game and nvidia
drivers. Some people have had success with the 6.50s but
I foind T&L corruption with these.
However what I and other have done is the following:
- set you desktop to the same resolution and colour
depth you want to run the game in.
- Configure the game's resolution.
- Quit the game and then edit the F1 2001 config file and
set the IsWindowed setting to 1. ie enabled.
This will launch the game in a window but at the cost of
a minor border you will get faaast framerates, fully
functional mirros and cars in mirrors.
Sure, it's annoying but it runs very well and should tide
me over until the inevitable patch.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Dave

Frankly, in my honest opinion, they should have warned about not supporting
some Voodoo based cards up front. I'm pretty cheesed off about this.
In another of my honest opinions the "GPL will never be beaten crap" only
exists in the mind of some RAS beholders. Personally, I can't remember
having seen such a claim being made in earnest. What I have seen a lot of is
people lamenting about yet another promising sim failing to beat GPL on all
counts and about, worse still, developers deliberately aiming under the mark
when developing a new sim.

I experienced similar problems with FS2000. And tracked the cause to a
conflict between my two USB devices (joystick and Wheel)
May this be your case?

F1 2001 runs great for me with a system similar to yours. I'm using the
12.90 Nvidia drivers. You might give those drivers a try.

I'll save you some time with the PS2 versions: EA wins across the board.
Here's my comparison:
Physics:
EA: Feels the way I expect an F1 would except a bit grippy at times and not
enough feeling of inertia when lifting and "gliding" through chicanes. The
feel is one of tremendous power and speed with very tight control. Easy to
drive but hard to drive extremely well. Control is very direct and smooth.
FF is good, not GP3 and certainly not GPL but the best F1 after those.
Sony: Feels very similar to EA. Major difference for me is the actual wheel
control (using the Logitech Force GP). The control isn't as direct or
immediate in this one.
EA wins here by transferring excellent physics to your hands via control and
decent force feedback. I did my standard F1 physics test: cut the wheel and
pop into first gear. This is the "celebration" dance where the car spins in
circles. EA looked and behaved exactly as expected, spinning around the
inside front tire. Sony felt artificial, spinning slightly, moving forward
and STOPPING then spinning again. This just didn't feel real.
Graphics:
EA: I can't believe how good this looks with 22 cars on the track! GT3 are
you listening? Trade in some eye candy for more cars and damage. Pure
racing experience is far more important than the color of the sky at sunset.
Back to EA, the tracks aren't the most accurate but the graphics are superb.
Great textures, lighting effects, particle effects, etc. Best F1 visuals on
a console by far.
Sony: Looks dated but certainly still very nice. Little too much shimmer
and jaggies. Colors muted and overall darker. Gameplay impact, it's harder
to see what's ahead.
EA wins handily again.
Sound:
EA: Best sound ever, period. Won't waste too much time describing since I
think it's not even close.
Sony: Sounds like a toy F1, not even close to reality.
EA wins again.
Gameplay:
EA: Bottom line for me: fun. The AI is a huge improvement over prior years.
Competitive, sometimes daring, far from perfect. I play sim mode, no
driving aids with EASY opponents. For comparison, my avg. lap at monza is
1:28. I'm hardly an expert but on easy I'm in the race. I qualify 12-13
and generally stay competitive throughout, finishing anywhere from top 10 to
last depending on the day I'm having. The racing is tight and exciting,
probably more exciting than real F1 which is okay for me since 1 hour of
lapping alone is not my idea of racing. I don't mind a slight departure
from pure F1 that includes more passing and action but still seems realistic
and credible. I really enjoy this game. The challenge mode was a fun bonus
that is worth going back to as a sort of driving school for the newbies.
Sony: The AI is pretty good around the track but I can't get around the
first lap! At monza I've crashed and restarted at least 30 times. I'm
either too fast and rear-ending the car in front or too slow and getting hit
from behind. I know first turns can be treacherous but this is just poor.
There are still hits and spins in EA but I get through the first chicane in
EA at least 9/10 times. The lack of a true cockpit view is a big negative
for me as well since I never feel like I'm actually IN a car.
EA takes this category as well.
Overall:
EA is my choice for best modern F1. I won't spend anymore time with GP3 on
the computer since EA on my TV looks better (amazing considering the PC
resolution advantage), feels just as good if not better and is more fun and
immersive.

get the 21.81 detonator drivers, dx 8.1 and it should help, especially the
21.81 drivers.

Yep, it's still got that problem! weird isn't it?

The problem revved describes was exactly what I had when using the 21.81s on
my GF2 Ultra and I was on the verge of dumping F1 2001. Whenever I moved
back to the old trusty 12.90s wow! F1 2001 really is superb.

It free's up the steering and makes the game very enjoyable. Best
*modern*F1 game to date. Graphics are now much improved and brighter than
before.

He's comparing PS2 console versions. Sony doesn't have a current PC F1
sim that I'm aware of. The EA console version of F12k+1 does have FF.

What's it say at the head of that paragraph? Sony? No, "EA," which is what
Joe was calling the PC version. Of course, I could be wrong.

You didn't run that many laps in GP3 and F1CS2k? Why - were they that
difficult, or just that bad? If they were that bad, why do you think so? I
have them both. I'm not GOOD at them(no surprise), but I think they're ok...

There may be other reasons as well (I'm sure someone will help us

That only applies to the OpenGL drivers. Some games do not switch to
16bit though, even though you have it set to in the game options, and
use your desktop settings.

I'd better start by saying that I buy almost all the race sims around so
that I can post about them at Legends Central if required. This means that
I have a pretty extensive collection so inevitably sims get left by the way
side. My main sim of choice is GPL with N4 as a backup. In the last 3 or 4
months I can't recall running another sim apart from these two.
I didn't run many laps in GP3 because the AI weren't very good plus you
couldn't hear them. I got fed up with crashing into the AI when I turned in
simply because I had no idea they were there. I also wasn't a big fan of
the graphics which looked very dated. I did try the GPxPatch and the
graphical updates but the sim simply didn't appeal to me.
I didn't run many laps in F1CS2k because I didn't like the track graphics,
particularly the arcade style brake boards. I also didn't like the FF.
Again the sim lacked that certain something to get me excited.
F1 2001 certainly appears to have appeal at the moment. I have run 80+ laps
at Silverstone so far working on setups and have really enjoyed it. The
only other tracks I have run at are Spa and Monacop where I have done a
couple of laps each. Silverstone just seems right. It is the only F1 track
I have been to and I was really impressed by some of the details. For
example, I sat in a stand next to the BRDC building during part of the F1
test day I went to. That stand is modelled as a track side object and even
has BRDC written in the seats. A very nice touch that shows atention to
detail.

Glad you like it! After reading many of your posts over the last couple of
years, I had a feeling you'd be impressed.
Although I haven't played F1 2001 for the PC, I do know that F1 2000 isn't
close to the PS2 F1 2001 in terms of FF, physics, feel and racing fun.
Someone mentioned that the PS2 version was developed in house by EA Sports
and not by ISI. He claimed that in the credits there is a "special thanks"
to ISI. Doesn't sound like the developer would thank themselves ;-) so this
must be an EA Sports production.
I haven't checked the credits yet but it makes sense that this is not ISI
based on the fact that the newest PC version has no FF while the PS2 not
only has FF but it's far better than last years PC version. Hardly absolute
proof but certainly reasonable doubt.
Have fun with F1 2001 for PS2.

Rrevved,
When you've thrashed it around a bit, please post some in-depth comments.
Personally, as a notebook user, I cannot justify purchasing a desktop just
to run a game (which is what it would probably take to do the PC version
justice), but there is a conspicuously empty space under my TV which as of
yet does not contain a DVD player, and the PS2 just dropped to 440 SFr
(about 260 USD) here in Switzerland, and with WRC just around the corner as
well...
However, the F1 games to date on the PS2 (F1RC, Sony's F1-2001) left me flat
after a few laps. There was no comparison to the perceived realism of a
PC-based sim. Sure, GP3 is ugly as a brick compared to the newer PS2 and PC
games, but I still have a great feel of leaning on the car on a hot lap, and
of dicing with proper opponents (especially in GP3-2000). GPL with all the
graphical updates still leaves me breathless, and I've yet to find a console
rally sim which approaches RallyMasters for car feel.
So, give me a shout when you come up for air.

can't get enough of them. Can't wait to try F1 2001 - PC or PS2 if it's as
great as people say it is.

Maybe I knew the AI was there because I'm used to being lapped, and thus use my
mirrors more than you?<g>
I guess I never got good enough to actually RACE with the AI. Or, I attributed
any accidents to my lack of skill. I haven't run the GPxPatch yet.

It's probable that I didn't notice the graphics in F1CS2K because I was too
busy just trying to stay on the TRACK.<g> I don't have a FF wheel, so that's
not an issue.

Never argue with an idiot. He brings you down to his level, then beats you

I bought it. Fiddled with the controller setup for the longest time (to
get the feel right) until I decided to copy my F1-2000 settings! LOL.
Something like 50%, 35% sensitivity and 0% dead zone.
I run it in 1024x768x32 with all AI, full track, medium AI car details and
get 25-40ish FPS. With 25ish on the grid.
The only bug I can see, is the mirrors don't work for me on my KyroII even
in 16-bit color mode.
I love the physics, graphics and sound. I wish it had telemetry. I'm
working on testing multiplayer -- at least it has online practice, qualify
and warm-up sessions! :)
It is better than F1-2000 -- Yes. I don't have F1-2000-CS so I can't
comment on that, but for $45 CAD it was pretty cheap! :)

Don't run it in 32bit mode. You will get no benefit by doing so, but
will slow the game down by doing so.
