Truely taken by this one! Feels great to drive, some tweaks are
available at SimRacingNews.com and I'm lovin' it.
F1 2001 > GP3 2000, IMHO
F1 2001 praised, with multiplayer and control issues
Rob Swindells declared F1 2001 better than GP3 2000. Others agreed it felt great but reported broken multiplayer with warping, controller deadzone and lag problems, and inaccurate tracks such as the Hungaroring. Tony Rickard shared tweaks from the High Gear forums such as LOD changes, and the GPLFOV utility for GPL was also mentioned.
Automated summary.
I'm waiting for DGF's critique...:)

David,
Have you tried F1 2001? I was a big fan of F1RC (except for the AI), but F1
2001 when run with the "right" drivers (grrr) is definitely a cut above.
Definitely worth a look, i'll be interested in your view,
All the best,

It's nice, no doubt. However, there are some problems with F1 2001.
Multiplay doesn't work for now. Too much warping, cars put on the grid
in the same spot, hitting invisible obstacles. No prediction code for
the other cars, sometimes they're going very fast to make up lost
distance due to dropped packets. I also don't understand the need
for 4 practice, 1 qualify and a warmup session for multiplay.
Further you don't see the time left in each session. If you leave the
qualify session, and return, you've another 12 laps to qualify. It's
not possible to enter a chatline while in car. I also don't understand
why the chatwindow is so small, maybe 20% of the available space.
If the host or game starts the race, you don't have the ability to
select/modify your setup/strategy.
On the track, sometimes the other cars looks very weird, only front
wing with front wheels for example. Another problem is, the other cars
become invisible when they're about 300 meters away. Very annoying.
The other cars don't seem to have contact with the road. Nope,
multiplay for now is too frustrating to be fun.
Offline it's not too bad. Physics are ok, graphics are good, sound in
car is great. Outside the sound is mediocre. I can't comment on the AI
yet. Controller setup is mediocre. I feel there is major lag, it seems
to beCPU load related. What I really like is the feel of power the car
has. Without any aids you can't drive away full throttle very easily,
you've to be cautious.
Braking the same, once your speed drop, you've to be aware the car's
behaviour changes once the downforce effect is less. No more full laps
with locked frontwheels, as in F1RC. Riding the curb is possible, but
it can upset the car. Yup, driving the car, apart from the controller
lag, is fun.
The setup management is awfull. Yes, you can assign a favorite setup
for each track, but you still have to load it. No folder for each
track, all setups are saved in 1 folder. That will be fun if you've an
average of 5 setups for each chassis, for each track... (that's 880
setups...)
If you change a setting, and you save it, you've to type the setupname
again, even if you want to overwrite it. Is a Save and Save as option
to hard for EA? When you do a testsession, everytime you're in the
pits it seems to revert to the default setup. In car you see the
overal tyre temp, but when in the garage, there is no way to see the
tyre temps. No inner/center/outer temps, so it's not easy to setup the
camber. I also miss the toe settings. And, no telemetry...
Conclusion: The base is good, but some parts aren't implemented well.
For me the controller lag and setup management are a bit of a pleasure
killer. The first might be my system, so probable that's solvable. The
latter however, I fear that will not be addressed in a patch.

other games too, just a FYI.

Well it does mean we guinea pigs will have sorted out the solutions to
making this sim fly by the time you get it!
Have your list of tweaks ready for when you do get it. These include
For those with geforce cards - a number of drivers to try (12.41 work for
me - loads of different tales)
Edit the config.ini file to try windowed mode
Update the car textures if you want tobacco adverts etc. (coming out
already)
Edit the default.cfg file to alter cockpit view to give more perspective (a
bit like the option in GP3)
Edit default.cfg to alter T-cam view to include helmet
Edit default.cfg to add on-board cameras for AI
Edit player.plr to add shadows for T-Cam view
Edit f1car.gen to change lod values so cars don't disappear from view (no
hit on fps)
Some even find running FRAPS improves frame rate.
...and probably some more...
Phew - this is after how many days since release?
Having done all this settle down and enjoy
Cheers

Lots of experimentation going on by various people atm, but I changed every
occurence of MeshFile=<1234>vd.MTS to have a LODOut=(500.0)
e.g.
MeshFile=<1234>vd.MTS CollTarget=False HATTarget=False LODIn=(10.0)
LODOut=(500.0)
Sure enough the cars no longer appear/disappear when they are so far down
the road and no obvious impact on fps

I do have big controller problems with my LWFF. Someone posted here
that even if you set deadzones to 0 in the game, you have to set it
manually to 0 also in one of the config files (somewhere in the
Players map I believe).
I didn't have time to test this yet, but it seems a logical
explanation.

Before you buy it - not all tracks are modelled accurately.. some are
good, like Suzuka, some were made while being stoned, like
Hungaroring. However, all the tracks are much more bumpy than in GP3
or F1RC, making the driving sensation much more realistic. Brazil is a
blast, though the bump before s/f is a tad overdone.. everytime I get
the feeling I'm going to be launched when I drive over that bump..
It really looks like they took their time for some tracks and had to
rush to get the last tracks ready before release.. the difference
between the quality of the tracks is really big unfortunately.

In another thread in this newsgroup which you started, you mentioned a
GPL utility to change FOV. I went to the link you gave, read the
messages and looked at the screenshots. Among the comments I have seen
is how much different the tracks look when you change the FOV. In GPL
the FOV is probably too wide, so narrowing it a little makes sense. I
think ISI's games have the opposite problem. I don't have F1 2001 yet,
but I have F1CS2K and I always thought the FOV in F1CS2K was too narrow.
Lately I have been playing with a wider FOV and I really think it
improves the appearance. However I don't really know if the tracks look
more accurate or not, since I have never been to any of them. I just
wonder if the criticism ISI always seems to get about track accuracy is
really just due to the FOV. For example, I think I read a review
somewhere where it was said that ISI had overemphasized the height of
Eau Rouge. A wider FOV would decrease the vertical size of hills and
bumps, thus it should fix problems like that. Try a slightly wider FOV
with F1 2001 and see if the tracks look any better. I would like to
know what you think.

I never had to do that in F1 2000 CS. Maybe I'm just a better
driver :-)

Damn.. so that's also not the problem. I notice more and more posts on
other forums from people who have the same problems as me.
I give up for the moment, I'll just wait untill someone else comes
with the solution.. GP3 took me a long while to setup correctly
(without the gp3 setup guide on www.bhmotorsports.com I would never
have gotten the control settings correct) and now I'm sick of allways
messing around with the controller settings to get it working right..
Just give us a GPL/N4 calibration menu dammit :)

Don't just look at the screenshots, install GPLFOV and try it, you
have to experience it to see how great it is :)
>Among the comments I have seen
>is how much different the tracks look when you change the FOV.
Correct, all the tracks have so much more depth now.. on Monza for
example you don't notice too much difference, but hilly tracks like
the Ring, Zandvoort and Bremgarten have so much depth now..
Also you have a much better feeling in the corners, I can just corners
and distances better, I really think it makes me a much more
consistent driver..
>In GPL
>the FOV is probably too wide, so narrowing it a little makes sense.
Yep, default view is 78 degrees, I reduced it to 50 degrees which is
much better.
Well, some tracks are made really nice and some suck. I'm no track
expert, but even I can see that Suzuka and Monza are close to real
life while Hungaroring seems more like a fantasytrack.
I don't really care that much about this though, I think it's much
more important that the sim itself is good, and if the tracks are a
tad different than their real-life, who cares :)
I just warned David about the non-accuracy of some tracks because a
couple of weeks ago he wrote he wouldn't be interested in any sim if
the tracks were not accurate. As a good friend, it was my duty to warn
him.
For now I uninstalled f1 2001 because I can't get my controller
working correctly. I'll try adjusting the fov once I installed it
again and have it working, thanks for the tip, I didn't even know it
was possible in f1 2001 :)
It's a simple adjustment in one of the ini files I asume? The
config.ini file?
PS I don't think the inaccuracy of the tracks is due to a wrong fov,
since some tracks like Suzuka are quite good with the default fov..
and Eau Rouge too steep in f1 2001? The one who told you that should
visit Spa in real life sometimes :) The closest to real life version I
saw was a beta version of a Spa 1980 layout for GPL. S-t-e-e-p :)

Hi
I had the control lag problem, and it was solved with DXTweak. It showed
that my directx dead-zone was at 5%, I changed it to 0%, and F1 2001 was
like a different game. I recommend you try it out...

Those were my exact words..........dear friend?
The tracks in F1RC are close to perfect, and I will be disappointed if the
tracks in following F1 sims aren't as good. Definitely. If the developer
doesn't use GPS, then their tracks won't be as accurate. That fact alone
won't keep me from using the sim though. Rally Tophy's tracks aren't real at
all, but I'm looking forward to that sim.

Forgot something. My main concern right now is actually the "view" as I'm
driving around those tracks. F12000/CS had a sort of fish-eye view which I
didn't like at all. I hope that's gone now.

I was referring to this post from you:
"I know, based on real life/F1RC side by side track comparisons, that
the F1RC tracks are almost perfect. If the F12001 tracks aren't just
as accurate, then that would be disappointing."
Just wanted to warn you before you spent your hard-earned money on F1
2001, the tracks are not as accurate as in F1RC, so you will be
disappointed.
Don't mention it, that's what friends are for!

If I understood correctly that can be adjusted manually now..

Er, I don't have F1 2001 yet, so I can't tell you for sure. :-( I
know it was adjustable in F1CS2K and I believe I saw a message from
somebody in the High Gear forums who had figured out how to adjust it in
F1 2001. It's probably a pretty straightforward hack, since ISI likes
to keep those kind of settings in text files. Just search for the
string "FOV" in the F1 2001 folder and you will probably find it.
Please post the solution if you find it, I'm sure there are other people
interested in it.
Maybe you're just used to driving cars with numb steering. ;oP
