Motorsport coverage on British free-to-air TV

David Buttery listed a weekend's free-to-air UK motorsport programming for comparison with the Speedvision news. Americans noted it resembled Speedvision's schedule and Ed Solheim said Norway got far less, before the thread drifted into transatlantic jokes about chips and left turns.

What with all the discussion about Speedvision recently, I thought some of you non-UK types might like to see the sort of choice we get over here, and to compare it to what you get (got?). I'll only list free-to- air terrestrial programmes, as that's all I can get... SATURDAY ======== 11.00am Channel 4: Goodwood Revival 2001 (highlights, 1 hour) 1.30pm ITV: Japanese GP Qualifying (*live*, 1 hour 45 mins) 3.15pm ITV: Ken Tyrrell - Surviving Formula One (1 hour 5 mins) SUNDAY ====== 5.40am Channel 5: Moto GP from Melbourne (*live*, 1 hour 50 mins) 6.00am ITV: Japanese GP Race (*live*, 2 hours 30 mins) 12.45pm Channel 5: Moto GP (full-length rerun, 1 hour 35 mins [sic]) 1.15pm ITV: Japanese GP Race (full-length rerun, 2 hours 30 mins) 7.30pm Channel 5: Motorsport Max (magazine, 30 mins) MONDAY ====== 12.15am [sic] ITV: Japanese GP (highlights, 1 hour 5 mins) 1.55am Channel 4: The Chequered Flag - German saloons, TOCA support and Formula Rally (highlights, 55 mins) 2.50am Channel 4: TVR Tuscans from Brands Hatch (highlights, 25 mins) 3.15am Channel 4: Goodwood Revival 2001 (as Sat, highlights, 1 hour) TUESDAY ======= 12.30am Channel 5: Moto GP from Melbourne (yet another full-length rerun, 2 hours 25 mins [I know, these running times are all over the place!]) 2.55am Channel 5: FedEx CART - Laguna Seca, (highlights, 1 hour 45 mins) 4.40am Channel 5: "Motorsport" (haven't a clue, 30 mins) WEDNESDAY ========= 3.10am ITV: The Racing Arrows (documentary series, 25 mins) 4.15am Channel 5: Motorsport Max (as Sun, magazine, 30 mins) 10.35pm ITV: Pulling Power - Jenson Button helps "cure video game addicts" (gah!) (magazine, 30 mins) THURSDAY AND FRIDAY =================== Nothing at all! (Unless you love Argentinian league football...!) A bit of an odd week, this one, as there's no BTCC or WRC, and instead hours and hours of snooker is our diet in the afternoons. :-( (Incidentally, those lucky people who do have all the subscription services, such as Eurosport and Sky, get quite a bit more - karting, Superbikes, drag racing, better CART coverage, Winston Cup, truck racing, motocross and rallycross. Oh, and several hours of petanque, for some reason... :-) ) -- One-line reply + 300-line quote = unread post. The GPL Scrapyard returns (slowly): http://www.hillclimbfan.f2s.com
Jeepers, David - looks pretty much like a speedvision schedule. For not much longer, it seems. Seriously depressing news about this mutating Nascar Channel thing. Hell; the stuff's omnipresent as it is, already. Oh well, maybe ESPN2 will pick up the slack; they already show some less mainstream racing series like indy lights and outdoor(!) motocross. Thinly scattered between all the ubiquitous X-treme sports stuff like bmx bungee jumping and freestyle naked vert skateboarding, that is... So long, WRC, SBK and Moto GP. Ciao, Legends. Sheesh... Motocross is typically an indoor sport? Cheers Hamish "David Buttery" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Forgot to add the ;-). Just a cynical dig from the homeland of Supercross, and its new bastard child freestyle motocross. Actually, I spent quite a few years in motocross in my formative years; even made my required pilgrimage to Namur. But consistent TV coverage of outdoor motocross races in the U.S. is a recent phenomenon, one that's indicative of a niche channel's willingness to cover narrow-interest sports. Just mentioned it in the hope that if road racing (4-wheeled or 2) finds itself in need of a home on U.S. TV, there are some at the ready. Keep an eye out! Note that it's the last time the BTCC will be shown on BBC - woo-hoo! :-) -- Richard. "Michelle, ma belle. These are words that go together well, my Michelle."
