Speedvision to become a NASCAR-focused channel
Don Scurlock linked news that Fox would turn Speedvision into a NASCAR-oriented channel. American posters lamented losing coverage of F1, sports cars, touring cars and historic racing shows and the broadcast team, and worried about sponsorship for other series. Some argued NASCAR had made the channel profitable and saw it as a business decision.

Ouch.....that hurts. The place to go for decent race coverage looks like
it's headed down the drain. Unfortunately, they won't even notice when I
cancel my subscription. It may leave an opportunity for a network to pick up
the slack (we can always hope).
I wonder how the old broadcast team (Varsha, Hobbs, etc.) feels. Maybe
like Howard Stern when the radio station he was working for switched to
country music.

From the article:
"We don't think it can be just NASCAR 24 hours a day out of the gate,"
Brooks says. "It will have some other racing elements. That's probably
the right mix to get us started."
In other words, they're desperate to go 100% NASCAR as soon as they can
make it pay. I feel for you :(

Thanks, Dave. There are Yanks who really aren't
interested in watching NASCAR. I've fallen in
love with touring and rally and it looks like
Speedvision -- which I went out of my way to
subscribe to -- is now going to be as dismal as
the broadcast channels. ACK!

Awh man! My cable company just started showing SpeedVision here last Friday and really enjoyed
the variety of racing that was on this weekend! I hope they keep the GP
motorcycle racing. TSN used to show it here but stopped about 10 years
ago I believe, it was awesome to see them race again on Sunday night! I like NASCAR, but
it will also be sad to see the variety go. I would like to see a touring
car race, when is the next one on?

NASCAR, blah, blah, NASCAR, NASCAR, NASCAR.
Guess I better go to Laguna Seca for holidays next year 'cause I won't be
getting ALMS coverage on the SpeedFoxVisionNASCAR channel.

Ughh... I'm weeping... I do like to watch most of the NASCAR races and I
would like to see more of the Winston West and Busch North series, but I'm
just disgusted that there'll be no more Goodwood, Legends of Motorsport, F1
Saga, Lap of the Gods, Touring Cars, Motorsport Mundial, etc, etc... Why
does everything good always have to be destroyed by the almighty dollar?

Well, it was fun while it lasted, the last couple of paragraphs realy
scare me "We don't think it can be just NASCAR 24 hours a day out of
the gate," Brooks says. "It will have some other racing elements.
That's probably the right mix to get us started". Adds Liberatore:
"We're a niche, but within that, we have to be as broad as possible.
We want to be the mall. Some go for GNC, some go for Cinnabon. You
need both." Out of gate? does this mean in a year or so it will be All

Look at it this way...
NBC/Fox have invested a ton of money. There is already a lot of coverage of
Nascar on the local fox affiliates. They are going to over saturate with
Nascar to the point where people will get sick of it and start turning away.
They have already started to see this. Attendance has been down this year
(and it wasn't just due to the loss of Earnhardt). Like everything, it'll
peak then die.
I do lament the loss of what was finally the enthusiasts network, but that's

The second law of thermodynamics.

Ya know, they could still do live F1 practice, qualifying
and racing, at 4:30 in the morning here on the west coast.
For the Western hemisphere races, U.S., Canada and Brazil,
they could play them on the local Fox sports stations, like
Fox Sports Northwest out here.
Well, I can dream, can't I?

As much of a loss as this is for the North American viewers it must be an even
bigger loss for people that actually race at high levels. Getting sponsorship
money is hard enough as it is. Without the national tv coverage that
SpeedVision offered, atracting that advertising money is going to get a lot
harder. It's going to hurt the future prospects of many different racing
series.

The announcers have said they will still keep bidding for the rights to
F1. But for how long. It seems the FIA limits the broadcast rights to 1
year contracts. ESPN would love to have F1 back now that they have lost
CART and Nascar, but I just don't see the Disney owned network having cash
for any major purchases except NFL football.

I think the reason attendance is down is due to the general level of
economic uncertainty driving a reduction in consumer spending, coupled
with increasing ticket prices. When a decent seat starts costing $75
or $100, most folks start having better things to spend their money
on.
I live within an easy drive of probably 1/2 of the races, and I
haven't been to a single one in about 5 years because the ticket
prices are just ridiculous.
I don't know anyone who quit going because Earnhardt died.

I'm in the EXACT same boat as you, MrLipid. The good news is that
once Speedvision makes the changeover, I can go with one of the lesser
subscription plans on the Dish Network and save a few bucks.

It could be argued that one of these years, we're going to get ZERO f1
coverage in USA :( Very frickin' sad. I'll have no reason to get up
at 4:30am to watch the euro races, or fall asleep after the start from
trying to stay awake all night.
Both ESPN and Fox and Speedvision all underestimate the fan base of F1
in America. C'est la vie, they say :( I'm so sick of Bernie I could
puke. SHOW THE DIGITAL FEED IN USA ON ESPN FOREVER AND WATCH IT GROW
IN AMERICA. It's the pinnacle of motorsport, fans will watch.

I was under the impression that it and Outdoor Life had been added to Total
Choice. I keep the $10/month sports package for the Speedvision and NASCAR
reruns on the Fox Sports Net affiliates.

The worst part is, in the article it says that Speedvision became
profitable last year. What idiot at Fox sees that and thinks "Hey,
lets take a profitable network and totally change every program on
it!" I know there are a ton of Nascar fans but come on, if the market
is that big, then create ANOTHER NETWORK! Fox sports net has so many
different channels on DirecTV, and they just added a Fox sports world.
Why do they feel the need to kill a perfectly good network to create a
new one? I just hope the original execs. from speedvision go out and
form another network as a Speedvision replacement, with coverage of
all the other great series... all the touring car series, trans-am,
ALMS, GP bikes, World Superbike, AMA superbike, dirt bikes, all the
boating shows, the aircraft shows.. good god I never realized how much
variety is on that channel. And they want to turn it into a channel
for one goddamn race series? I know Nascar has many different series
in it, but they're all just boxy shite cars going around in circles.
ARRGH!
For years I badgered the cable company about providing Speedvision. Now
that Speedvision will be a shadow of it's former self, I'm sure it will be
added on the next system rebuild. When cable was first available to me,
ESPN wasn't included but TNN covered alot of racing that was great to watch.
I enjoyed what I could and hoped that more owuld be offered. I voiced my
opinion and saw no change for years. When ESPN and ESPN2 were staples for
the cable providers, ABC became involved and chose to ruin any Motorsports
coverage they provided.
The trend seems to lead to two options.
1) Screw the entertainment media and get your butt to the track to watch
the races you want. I'm sure that is no problem as we are all independantly
wealthy.
or
2) Forget watching races and enjoy the best part- participate ! It doesn't
matter if it's computer simulation, go karts, hillclimb, SOLO, stage ralley,
TSD ralley, or whatever.
If they don't have the brains to understand what WE want, then let them find
out the hard way -no audience - no ratings - no money.
Sorry to rant, but I got a real problem with the corporate world.

You bastard. :) I'd have to get Digital Cable to even hope to get
Speedvision, and that's after getting a special Sports package! They haven't
even given any thought to adding it to normal cable here. :( I'm gonna have
to shell out even more $$ now to see CART next year, and apparently tons of
NASCAR coverage I do NOT need. >=/

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I think Speedvision became
profitable this year, due to there increased NASCAR coverage. NASCAR is
currently the second or third largest drawing television sport in the states
(behind the NFL and perhaps behind MLB). When you consider what Speedvisions
shows, with the exception of the F1 races, it is bargain programming. That
is what made them profitable. They purchased programming that was cheap,
meaning no demand for that material, meaning they keep more of there sponsor
revenue. Now the arguement could be made that sponsor revenue went up, but
honestly I don't think most of there programming is a big sponsor draw.
Hours of powerboat and motorcycle racing are not going to win any ratings
wars. It is mostly filler material.
I too will miss the diversity of Speedvision, but they have already cut so
much of the great racing that theyhad shown. When was the last time
Speedvision showed some of the great touring car racing from Germany or
Australia? They watered down the product already.
The group I feel bad about in this switch is the USAR, and the Hooters Cup
races. They have put on some good racing, and I fear that will be lost in
the switch.
But on a positive note, perhaps more regional NASCAR series will see
expanded coverage. I don't know how many of you have seen the Featherlite
Modified series, but when they race it is a great show, and when they run at
Louden, well they kick the Winston Cup cars collective asses. Very exciting.
It will be something to watch. I expect the change to happen for the next
Daytona 500, as it would be the best time to roll out this new network,
since this 500 will be a very emotional one. I'll be watching, as I am sure
many of you will be at least at first.

Ok - I get Speedvision with my basic cable. You're a faster sim-driver than I
am. Wanna trade?
I didn't *think* so... :-)
Besides, don't your PARENTS pay for the cable?

I will miss DeCadenet, Hobbs, Varsha, Despain,
and I even started to get a feel for Posey. The history. The events. Those
wonderful shows that celebrated motorsport just for the sake of motor
sport.....
:-(
The press release said this, "It should be like Must See TV, focused and
concentrated," he says. "People expect to be dazzled. That's what we have to
live up to."
Like ESPN or MTV trying to show a sporting event - Somewhere between the
tits and ass and Mt. Dew I thought I saw a guy go by on a snowboard....
*now* I understand what world class alpine is all about.
:-(
Fortunately, it's a separate package unto itself on DTV. It's gone at the
first sign of cheese.

I think this is spot-on. As I recall, the cable companies and
satellite broadcasters sold the consumer market on the notion that
program variety would greatly increase, because the large number of
available channels would mean that they could do far more
non-mainstream shows, and in fact, could afford to broadcast almost
anything because they only needed to make money on key channels. Fox
at one point (the head guy I mean, in an interview around 1999) even
went so far as to say they have to pay for all that bandwidth anyway,
so they would definitely be putting out a lot more. It was either him
or Ted Turner that said that no longer would we be inundated with
American football, but would see all the world's sports because it
would no longer matter because they now had the bandwidth for broad and
diverse coverage.
Hello? Why is it that actual non-redundant programming has DECREASED
in the last few years?
Bastards...
