Fellow sim racers,
just a thought: How different the quality of programming really is
between different racing simulation programs!
What difficulties many of us have suffered with the otherwise
quite promising F1 2001! And thanks to many, I can now
run it reasonably well. But lots of tweaking! And on the other
hand, how well the demo of the Rally Trophy installed itself!
At least for me it needed no tweaking! And quite the same with
GPL and N4..., well lots of "tweaking" later to make GPL even
better...
But back to F1 2001 and Rally Trophy: now I am very happy that
I can run F1 2001 so that in Monza the start is about 15 fps,
and then soon 20-25, and after a couple of turns, let us say
after the two Lesmos, about 30-45 fps. That's ok. But with Rally
Trophy demo straight "from the box" I get 40-60 fps' all the time
after the strange 10 to 25 at the very start. And the graphics
is really good! And actually the same comment applied also to N4,
when it came out.
In a way I think we do not even now have a "good modern F1 sim"!
Let us hope there will be a patch for F1 2001, which gives us
force feedback, AND also repairs the graphics engine: there
really has to be something very wrong in it now!
Arto
PS The Rally Trophy demo is really, REALLY promising! And I am not
even very interested in rally - even after quite many Finnish
championships... Well, my first car, anyhow, was a Mini... ;-)

GPL ran like shit on all but the very top end CPU's when it was released. It
also ran better on the Rendition cards, which most didn't have.

game had redeeming features.

Yeah, but at least it kept running for more than a few laps !

And I'm sure that three years from now you'll find a dedicated
cadre of F1-2001 fanatics, with 100+ racing head-to-head online on a
Friday night.

"But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was
nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark
If GPL had sold well enough to have a sequal like most auto sims on the
market, no one would be playing GPL now either. MTM2 never had a sequal due
to the TRI/MS split, and there are still over a hundred people racing
against each other EVERY night. GPL isn't alone that respect.

because Rally Trophy doesn't have AI cars.
When F1 2000 came out I was really shocked at how slow it ran, and it was
unacceptable because the level of graphical detail didn't justify it, the 3d
engine was just plain unfinished and unoptimized. However, to me F1 2001
has the most detailed tracks and cars i've seen, so the frame rate is
understandable.
F1RC runs a lot faster than F1 2001 also, but again has less detailed cars
and tracks.

Rally-type racing simulators have always been more PC-friendly (except that
crappy programming of CMR2). You do not have any AI physics to model for
the most, and of course that means you do not have to model their 3d-shape
on screen. Try some hotlapping in modern F1 sims and you'll have about the
same framerate.

I believe you can race against the AI in the final version?

I thought F12001 didn't have good multiplayer options...?

Not finding that true with RT on my old 450/V3. I'm getting about 18FPS avg. from 6X4 through every point up to 12X10; no FPS
change at any resolution, suggesting a CPU load heavier than GPL, N4, NH, F1RC, etc.
Any other experiences on resolution-scaling out there?
