RT (and all rally sims) Co-Driver Call

23 posts by 16 people · 19 Oct 2001 02:42 UTC - 20 Oct 2001 12:52 UTC

What do rally co-driver pace-note numbers mean?

Tom Pabst asked whether the numbers in Rally Trophy's co-driver calls refer to gears. Replies explained that the numbers describe corner severity, along with calls like tightens, opens and don't cut, though there was disagreement over whether higher numbers mean sharper or faster corners. Posters noted that Colin McRae's games use gear numbers because McRae and Nicky Grist use that system.

Can somebody explain the nomenclature used by the co-driver, call of the course? I was under the impression that the "number" referred to the gear selection, the turn could safely be taken in, or should be taken in? Am I confused about that, or did they do things differently back at the time this sim recreates? I'm not a rally driver, obviously. I can figure out what the co-driver means....after a few runs through the RT stage. So, this question is just for my own education. Also, I thought there was a number called as well that indicated how far the turn being called was from the call point? Something like, "300, 5-right" meant the turn was 300 feet ahead and a fifth gear, right hand turn. Thanks in advance to all your rally guys (who are also embarrassing most of us American drivers with your stage times). Regards, Tom
The number is the severity of the turn A 1 is slight turn all the way to a 5 which is a hairpin type of turn So if he says "Right One" that means a slight turn to the right He will also call out Ditches, Jumps, Rocks, etc.. It took me awhile to learn one thing he said since I could not understand it, but he will also say "No Cut" meaning do not cut the turn since there is something there.. trees, ditch, etc... If he says something like "Right One" "Opens" means that it starts as a small turn to the right but then opens out I think I have all of this right.. I have never actually watched rally racing "Tom Pabst" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:eqMz7.35598$[email hidden]... > Can somebody explain the nomenclature used by the co-driver, call of the > course? > > I was under the impression that the "number" referred to the gearselection, > the turn could safely be taken in, or should be taken in? You do have it right. The number has nothing to do with the gear and everything to do with the angle of the turn. On Thu, 18 Oct 2001 22:16:56 -0500, "Cliff Roman" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Interestingly, CMR1 had the numbers the wrong way around. Here's my understanding of the turns (in order of severity): 1 2 3 4 5 Square Hairpin Other terms used are: tightens opens don't cut and caution (ditch, rocks etc)
Why does he say "Don't Cut" - because of rules or danger? "Damien Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9qooig$p213p$[email hidden]...

Tom, The 'number' means the 'speed' of the turn. The higher the number, the faster the turn. HOWEVER, in CMR2, I do believe the manual says the number is an indicator of the gear selection. ;) I've just started to get into Rally Racing this year, even checked out some Rally Racing Driving Schools <G>, so I am no expert by any means. Just as I get interested in Rally Racing, NASCAR has to go and destroy Speedvision on us =( Scott PA-Scott "Tom Pabst" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:eqMz7.35598$[email hidden]... > Can somebody explain the nomenclature used by the co-driver, call of the > course? > > I was under the impression that the "number" referred to the gearselection, > the turn could safely be taken in, or should be taken in? That's because Colin McRae himself uses this system, in contrast to every other driver on the circuit. It would be funny to put Nicky Grist, or whatever Colin's co-driver is called, into another car... Stephen Scott B. Colin McRae likes to have the co-driver say the gear number. I have CMR2 and it does this. Jason. Damien Smith wrote:

Man co driver guy is just so polite, I hit a tree, a rock then flipped over and he said "can you stay on the track please".........how about a bubba the spotter addon...something like ...."holy crap you almost freekin killed me you idiot" that would be funny scott www.windycityracing.com
Thanks guys! While there's lots of "comedians" here.......enough of you gave a valid description, so I think I've got it now. I think what was confusing me is that the only other time I've driven a rally sim was at E3 (year before last) when Colin McRae-2 was due out and they were giving away a real Ford Focus to the person who had the fastest time on a demo stage (run in a real Ford Focus, setup as a simulator). BRD and myself helped set that up for Codemaster's. So, I guess I learned the way Collin likes the turns called and thought that was the way it was done! Silly me. By the way, I really like this Rally Trophy sim. I took some time last night after making the "benchmark" post and really played around with the GF3 video card, screen color balance and all (using 3Deep) and this sim has just got spectacular graphics. There's work to be done with how the cars are modeled (or displayed) with regard to ride height and dimensions, but hopefully the "talent" in this sim community can fix most of that. It will be interesting to see how the final "car physics" model comes out. But, from what I can tell, the guy's at JW will be fixing anything that needs it. And, I don't think it will need a lot, not in that department at least. Now, if we could just get all the "aliens" to go play another arcade game - those of us who are human and value our lives (and that translates into not taking risks in sim driving beyond what you would take in a real car) could compare real stage times, only to see how we are progressing with our rally driving skills. By the way, in real racing, the driver never gets to run the stage a bazillion times to practice it before he "records" his race time. Right? So, doesn't that mean only our first time through the stage.....is a time that's consistent with real-life rally driving skills? Just thought I'd ask that question. Good excuse for a random track generator! :) Something like 1nsane's terrain generator would be just dandy. Tom Pabst wrote:

Mr. Grist also quips about "Jump, maybe...", at least in CMR2. /petern

Cliff is correct. Colin McRae actually uses a non-standard system with his co-driver...and they used that in "his" game. Marc. "Damien Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9qooig$p213p$[email hidden]...

As in a response, and as I just learned, this method is the way Colin McRae does it, but not the other drivers. =) That's what I get for learning from the manual! LOL -- Scott B.
