I think that whoever wrote the review for this game that caused me to buy it
should own me $50. (well, luckily I can return the game and get my money
back)
That has got to be the worst Nascar game I have played since Nascar
Revolution.
Graphics: These are horrible. They look like you are running N4 with a
software rendered
Audio: I personally find it just average so I do not really have much to say
about this
Control: Well, you have two choices really.. you can run with help such as
Stability Control or without. The problems are major either way. If you
run the game with Stability control it turns the game into 100% pure arcade.
You can beat and bang and bash and get completely sideways, but you will
never spin out. It turns the game into a .50cents store mall arcade game.
Now if you run it without stability control it becomes more realistic,
however impossible to actually race. The AI cars hit each other so often
and bang each other around that I do not think there is any possible way to
actually stay out of their way. Thus when they hit you, you wreck and there
goes your day. So no matter which option you choose, the game is
frustrating as hell
Modes: You have the standard Quick Race mode, Season mode and Career Mode.
Now alot of people wanted this game for the Career Mode. It allows you to
build a car (you can semi-design it), then get sponsorships and through
series of races and seasons you can move up to bigger sponsors, buy better
equipment and hopefully move your way up to a WC championship. Sounds great
doesn't it? Well it does sound good, but the execution is horrible.
In Career mode you are FORCED to run 5% races, 12 tracks with limited damage
and worse of all.. NO Cautions. Why Ed Martin (anyone else losing
confidence in Ed Martin?) decided this is the way it should be, I have no
idea. It is not so bad that those are the default options. What is bad is
that you are not allowed to change them.
Now, let me get down to the other miscellaneous problems that I noticed.
To me one of the big problems is track realism. Sure they did try to make
sure that the tracks "looked" realistic. You can definitely tell the
difference between the tracks just by looking at them and if you are used to
watching Nascar or playing Nascar Sims, you can definitely identify them
pretty easily. However, that is all they tried to do with the tracks.
Driving realism is out the window. It does not appear that they took any
care to make the tracks actually drive realistic. Examples: At Pocono, you
can do turn 3 at over 160 (actually, more like 170) mph. What is that all
about?? At Texas you can run your car flat out without lifting from the
gas. What am I driving? a CART car?
Well they tried to make it really nice by not only having WC drivers, but
also Busch drivers in the game. However, they completely overdid it. In any
given WC race you are in, there are about 15 Busch drivers also running with
you. Now this would not be so bad, except sometimes you have drivers like
Jeff Green driving not only his WC car, but also his Busch car in the SAME
race. Umm, that is kinda amazing don't you think?
Another problem (well not really a problem, just something I do not like) is
the paint jobs. They were nice to put in some Alternative paint jobs for
some of the drivers (such as Jeff Gordon's Bugs Bunny car or Bobby Labonte's
Coca-Cola polar bear car) but the problem is, when you go to race I think
the game just picks the paint job at random. So that means for someone like
Bobby Labonte that has 9 different paint jobs, you will only see him in his
normal car 1 out of every 9 races. It gets to the point that every race had
15 special paint jobs out there. Not a big deal I know, but just something
that is not very well thought out.
Anyways, mine is going back to the store today. If you disagree with me
about this game. So be it.. you are entitled to your own opinion.. however I
just think that some people deserved to hear mine before they spent $50 out
of their pocket for this game.
Nascar Revolution equaled Nascar Revulsion........so I guess Nascar
Thunder must be Nascar Blunder <G>
To bad; Papy could use some competition.

In Career mode (and maybe even in other modes) if you car gets too damage it
will say "Hit R2 to repair", you hit R2 and all the damage goes away!!
Now if only the real WC drivers had that

Really? I thought the graphics were quite nice. I don't recall
software-rendered N4 sporting anti-aliasing, real-time reflection and
environment mapping, damage skins, MIP'ing and LOD'ing textures and polys,
or accurate horizon mapping. Have they released another version?

Hmm. Not to totally bash your review (which I'm about to do, lol), but I
thought the sound was also very nicely rendered. Real-time engine RPM (like
Revolution had) modeling, real-time skidding effects, accurate and real-time
damage sounds, and real-time (yes, again) pit sounds. Real-time means it's
rendered from the action on-screen, not played from an unchanging WAV.

Yes.

Hmm. I just raced 10% at Tally against Legend (highest) AI skill. No
yellows. No contact, other than the love tap from behind. Started 23rd,
paired up with Gordon to draft, and finished 10th, well inside the lead
pack. The game models restrictor plate racing extremely well. Reminds me
of N2 multiplayer.

There is an option in the Main Menu called "Settings." You will find you
can modify your settings here. I guess some folks like to make things
harder than they are.

Again, under "Settings" you can change the damage model from "none" to
"limited" (current setting given above results) to "full."

Noted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and (given their country) the
freedom to express it. I'm sorry you didn't like the game. I hope
(sincerely) that you have fun with N4. I have enormous fun with it. As far
as console NASCAR sims go, this is the cream of the crop. It's much better
than I expected it to be, having played NASCAR 2001 the day I got 2002.

The graphics were jagged and horrible. Anyone used to graphics on a game
like N4 or NH on the PC would simply give out a "UGH" when loading up this
game

You can NOT change these for Career mode. Notice I did not say for Quick
Race or Season.. I said for Career mode. Like you said, guess some folks
like to make things harder than they are

Not in Career mode.. do we need to cover this again?

If this is the cream of the crop, then it just shows that Nascar sims on
consoles have a long way to go
Cliff, I agree with you that this game is crap.
But you CAN change the settings in career mode sir. Just wanted to let ya
know that. But the game still sucks. =)

But yes you are right, the rest of the problems still kill the game for me.

Why would anyone buy Thunder 2002 for a console, and expect it to be
anything but arcade???
I don't even own a console for that very reason.
