I just got F1 2001 and I'm fairly impressed except for one major problem that's making it virtually unplayable. I'm getting major steering lag. That is, I turn the wheel, and a beat later the onscreen steering wheel and wheels move. After reading up on this NG I though maybe it was a dead zone problem, but it happens even if I turn the wheel to say, 10:00 and hold it, then turn it in either direction. There's a clear delay between my movements and the movements in the game. I've also tried a wide variety of settings in the sensitivity sliders, and while that can go a good ways towards making the thing more drivable, the lag is still there. And yes, I get the same results no matter what steering help is set to. I'm using a fairly unique controller setup, but I don't think it's the problem. I have an MSFF wheel with the gameport connection, but since the pedals died I've been using the pedals from a Logitech GP wheel (USB). Both controllers show up fine in Windows and in F1 2001. Just for kicks I tried using the Logi wheel but the lag was still there. Any clues, hints, fixes out there?
That sounds more like poor frame rate than a steering problem per se. What kind of system are you running on and what are your graphics settings? "Ed Benson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Good call, I'm betting fps as well. I find the steering superb. Probably the best control I've experienced next to GPL. I can even admit it doesn't NEED force feedback (although I'd love some). -- Joe Marques "Haqsau" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Pg5B7.23308$[email hidden]... > That sounds more like poor frame rate than a steering problem per se. > What kind of system are you running on and what are your graphics > settings? > > "Ed Benson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:[email hidden]... > > I just got F1 2001 and I'm fairly impressed except for one major > > problem that's making it virtually unplayable. > > > > I'm getting major steering lag. I had that too. I also have a MSFF wheel. Get dxtweak. It allows you to remove the large deadzone that the wheel/game combo has. Sharpened up my steering no end and virtually eliminated the lag. Kev
Thanks for the input, but I don't believe it's a framerate problem. My fault, I should've covered that possibility in my OP. I have an Athlon 800 (SlotA) on an Asus K7V MB, Geforce2MX400 video, SBLive! sound, 256mb ram, running Windows Me, Detonator drivers v. 21.81. I tried setting video to Low and it had no effect on the steering lag. And my framerate seems solid anyway. I've mostly tested this with the car sitting still, but I first became aware of it because of how difficult it was to control the car at speed. I'm not talking about high-speed turns here either, just trying to move to one side of the track on a straight can be disastrous as the car keeps going straight for a moment, by which time I have turned the wheel more the neccesary, so that I start to veer to the side. By then I have to react quickly to keep from running off the track which means that I end up swinging from side to side before either running off the track or spinning, or both. It's kind of like in a Flight Sim, where there is supposed to be control lag, and you keep oscillating the pitch up and down, trying to get it level. I've been racing driving sims since Indy 500 and while I'm not the best driver out there I know what I'm doing well enough to know that this is not incompetent driving or poor framerate. I've driven racing sims with very low framerates while testing my settings and I know how that feels. I've tested the current problem at high speeds, low speeds, and at a complete stop. At low speeds I can see the picture moving in the brief time before the wheel starts to move. I do, however, appreciate any and all responses. Another poster has suggested that it is in fact a deadzone problem. Although I'm skeptical because of the way the lag is present even if I hold the wheel at different degrees of lock and then move it, as others have posted of this problem with MSFF wheels it seems the most likely culprit so far. I'll try DXTweak and see if it makes any difference. Ed "Haqsau" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<Pg5B7.23308$[email hidden]>...

I'm not up to speed on Detonators but I know F1 2001 has issues with some versions. Also I have heard of two tricks that supposedly help playability with Geforce's, one is running in a window (can still be full screen) and the other is running fraps 1.4 while playing. I know you said it isn't a frame rate issue but honestly the people that are using these tricks were complaining about problems similar to yours, and the problems went away after using these workarounds. Again, I don't use nVidia stuff so I can't be of any more help, but there is a lot of info on this in the High Gear forums at http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~hg/forums/. Another thing to try is reinstalling DX8 as this seemed to work for me after I changed the drivers to the Nvidea 7.58. which seem to be a popular choice for in Win98SE for GF2 cards (also the 12.90). Before it was impossable to play even though the frame rate was about 40. Hope this helps On Tue, 23 Oct 2001 23:31:03 GMT, "Haqsau" <[email hidden]> wrote:

It's not just you, and it's not framerate. My system is a Athlon 1.2Ghz, Geforce2 Pro, 512MB ram. The frame rate is fine, but I also get the lag you describe. I find that if I exit the game and re-enter numerous times (seems somewhat random, 5 to 10 times usually does the trick), the problem will suddenly go away. I've tried numerous combinations of resolutions color depths and settings. Nothing seems to help other than restarting again and again, and suddenly...poof! it works. Of course by the time I get it working I don't feel much like playing anymore :-(
