Defence of F1 2001 and the Relay online service

Joe Murphy defended F1 2001 as a well-modelled sim, mocking those who could not get it running. Many agreed it was worth tweaking for, while others noted that hardware variation makes problems real for some users. Relay Games announced that its online service now supported F1 2001.

I have been reading (with great humour) some of the "reviews" of EA's new Formula One simulation, F1 2001 and feel great sorrow for those who don't seem able to make this game work despite their claims to having fast computers, state of the art video cards, "knowledge" Etc. I have worked in IT for the last ten years and manage a 350 node network for a major news organization, and don't really see what the fuss is about in making this game work. If you are one of those people downloading new drivers every week in search of another 2 fps, that's probably why your pc is so unstable. I don't claim to be a "expert" but I have followed F1 since 1987 etc. and have played racing sims, primarily Formula One, for the last ten years. I also autocross a BMW M3 and have won the DC region SCCA championsip for A Stock the last three years. It's just for fun, but I feel I know a little bit about handling. EA's game is spot on. Regardless, I have found EA's new game to be fun, realistic and overall a blast. The AI is great. The tracks are well modeled. And the graphics are fast. Out of the box with a P3 800 256 MB ram w/ Elsa GTS Gforce 2 the game has had a excellent frame rate and response. I am using a Logitech wheel and look forward to force feedback hopefully from a patch. F1 2001 has not crashed on me once after many hours of fun. And it is just what I needed during this madness, thanks EA! And boys, and girls lets watch our spelling and keep the expletives to a minimum when you flame me cause you can't make your PC run this game.
Don't forget to check out: http://f12001.relaygames.com Relay now supports F12001. Lotsa goodies and good times to be had online. Download the software, and play online... that's the way it should be :) Cheers, Schumi "Joe Murphy" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I agree the game is great, I just find it funny that while you were on your high horse, you forgot how to spell yourself!! (an"d" adults opinion) pretty rich!! "Joe Murphy" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Well you'll get no flames from me. The game runs great on my Radeon (driver issues are one of the reasons I don't own an nvidia card anymore). And on top of that this is the first F1 game I have tried where the control and the audio and visual feedback was so good that a tough course like Monaco is actually an enjoyable challenge rather than an exercise in frustration for a newbie like me. Just because the game runs well and doesn't crash on your computer, doesn't mean that it will run that way on all computers & that the software has no problems. Computers aren't game consoles you know. I'm not sure I would say the tracks are well modeled and that the handling is spot on & realistic when some of the tracks like Hungary are complete fantasy and you can go full throttle through allot of the corners such as Eau Rouge easily (even in the rain). There are more problems than just being able to get the game to run smooth & stable as well, such as having the wheel & pedals operate correctly. And if you think the AI is great........................ On 24 Oct 2001 15:49:39 -0700, [email hidden] (Joe Murphy) wrote:

Well done Joe It's easy to sit back and write smug articles when everything is going well, but anyone who tells me they have never had a problem when installing and running games over the years I would call a liar. To give credit to good games software companies there are many variables in the PC spec industry and it requires a lot of testing and patience before a game can be released for consumer purchase. EA have NOT tested this sim with 'official' Nvidia drivers otherwise it would work with no problems as far as graphics are concerned. What they are guilty of is beta testing this game at our expense, and knowing EA over the years there will be no patches just another product down the line which will be at our cost again. If you read my final post 'F1 2001 yes it is garbage' you will realise why I have good reason for this conclusion. I will still say that when it comes to thorough products and customer care Papyrus have got the others beat. By the way, smugness is NOT an adult trait Alan

I don't care whether I have to tweak things for a week to get started if the sim is as good as F1 2001. This is a feedback from a paying customer. Yeah I think its great, also who cares about a bit of tweaking to get it working. It is the best modern sim ever. When the multiplayer issues are sorted it could be the best sim ever (probably 2002 tho) Ash "Iain Mackenzie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:VA6C7.133$[email hidden]... | > And if you think the AI is great........................ | > | > | > | Not heard that complaint before. However, almost every gamer has Internet access. Whether the supporting forum is RAS or High Gear or anything else, he'll find that support, 95% of the time, as you put. The important thing is that he is KEEN ON driving that sim. In F1 2001, it's pretty rewarding. A subject line like "F1 2001 is crap" posted by the same individual I just replied, drives me crazy, considering all the year's efforts by simmers as well as programmers. It's INSTALLATION may be crap, but it is NOT CRAP as a whole package. I think the people who actually use the internet for support issues are a subset of the gaming population in general. If the people we support at my job are any indication, the general population doesn't have a CLUE.<g> But, I understand the difference between the program and the installation itself. I personally think that EA's controller calibration rountines SUCK. But if you can get past that Gordian Knot, SBK2001 and F12CS are good programs... Hmm... I finally had time to try it. It works fine. When I first ran it, the car was 'wandering' on the straights, and hard to control. I found the deadzone setting, turned it to 0%, and it's working much better. I'm still getting left in the dust by the AI though, and that's only at 80%! And YES, I have all the helps off except auto-clutch... <grumble, grumble...> Eldred -- Dale Earnhardt, Sr. R.I.P. 1951-2001 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPLRank - under construction... Good. It's worth the hassle, isn't it ? I like everything about the driving model except that there is too much downforce. You CAN take 130R and Eau Rogue flat out. They should reduce it a little in F1 2002 forcing you to back off a bit at those fast bends. Otherwise, the car behaves fantastic in slow speed. Anyway, the learning curve is very steep and I like that, too. :) > >"EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > >news:[email hidden]... > >> I just got F12001 yesterday, but I haven't gotten to the > >> controller routine yet... :) > > Hmm...
