OT: More trouble for CART

Penske considers leaving CART for the IRL

A report that Roger Penske's sponsor wanted only Indy 500 coverage sparked argument over whether CART was in trouble. Posters disputed claims of an SEC investigation and engine-maker departures, debated tobacco advertising bans, and argued about CART versus IRL viewership. When ESPN reported that Penske was indeed leaving CART, the thread ended with jibes at the poster who had insisted he would stay.

The point is that if CART loses Penske, that would be a big blow. Do you not understand that? Anyone can see that CART is having major problems right now, it's pretty obvios. JS "Olav K. "Our decision will be driven by our sponsor," says Roger Penske. OK, so that's usually the case anyway, but does he have to be quite so blatant about it? Not the slightest mention of a *racing* reason for the switch. For heaven's sake, US, if only you'd have the sense to ban tobacco ads (even on the EU's glacial timescale) we wouldn't have this idiocy. CART has problems right now, no point in denying that, but it depresses me that a lot of people seem to have given up in an American-based international series, and are content just to stay in the comfortable rut of IRL. I'm not disputing that it might well have good racing - but it would have been nice to see a proper international rival series to shake F1 out of its complacency - instead it looks as though the best we'll see is open-wheel NASCAR. -- Sceptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep insights can be winnowed from deep nonsense -- Carl Sagan The GPL Scrapyard returns (slowly): http://www.hillclimbfan.f2s.com
Cart is shooting it's own self in the foot. They'll be lucky to last another two season the way they are going now. As it stands right now they have no engine manufacturers for next year and are under investigation by the SEC. They are a sinking ship. CW "Olav K. All tobacco advertising will be banned in the US after 2006.
While not 100% accurate, CW isn't 100% wrong either, you can pick nit's with his statements but there's no point in pretending everything is hunky-dorry in CART. 2 of the 3 engine makers have said they're not staying past 2002 under the proposed rules. http://www.speedvision.com/pub/articles/racing/03CART/011018b.html http://www.speedvision.com/pub/articles/racing/03CART/011012b.html One of CART's biggest stakeholders is trying to use the SEC to stage a coup: http://www.speedvision.com/pub/articles/racing/03CART/011026a.html
The Security and Exchanges Commision (the "big brother" watchdog over the stock markets here in the US, a Federal organization I think) In layman's terms, they're the folks that came in and busted Gordon Gecco in "Wall Street" the movie. Also, Toyota won't commit to 2003 either unless the engine rules are identical to IRL spec. Which they won't. CART is aiming at a non rev-limited 3.5 l motor running on methanol. CART really needs to take up Ford's offer of a spec motor for 2003, it's the only way the series will survive. Rafe Mc On Thu, 1 Nov 2001 15:30:39 -0500, "Art McEwen" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Anyone who watches IRL (only 4 actually) will be unhappy when an organization like Penske comes in. They will totally dominate if they run an IRL season, the slap-dash efforts of the competition will be a laughing stock in comparison. It'll be like McLaren in the late 80's of F1, with complete domination. Hopefully it'll also spell the end of IRL and force a reconciliation. Rafe Mc

No it will be the end of CART but will force reconcialltion. Hmmm maybe after all the IRL teams get spanked they will leave and form a new series on the backwoods courses of Road AMerica, Mid Ohio & Road Atlanta :) dave henrie
Just curious... Is there anyone here in RAS that also posts in the www.seventhgear.com forums? With the amount of people in here in favor of CART, you folks should post there to help even out the doom & gloom... (even if it's purty g'damn gloomy!) Warlock!

I sometimes post in the autoracing1.com forum. But I've kind of stopped reading the forums now since i'm so sick and tired of so called CART fans who claim CART is dead, and at the same time sound like they enjoy it. When someone starts the post by claiming how big fan they are and use the rest of the post to tell everyone that CART is dead, again in a tone that almost sounds like they enjoy it. Like when I tell people that I can't travel to Le Mans next year because I have to attend my cousin's wedding. And the answer is "good, you don't need to go to those stupid motor races anyway". It's like the old saying, when enough people starts to believe something it starts to be the truth. That's why I'm so glad Mark Cippolini at Autoracing1.com is not taking part in the Robin Miller sudden quest for CART's demise. It's a good thing someone tries to stay positive, even there is not much to be positive about.

Don't let em get ya down Olav, CART will be fine, there is plenty of positive things happening, new races, new sponsors, SPEEDVISION, 140 million dollars, and so on. CART may be experiencing some growing pains right now, but I'm not worried at all. Open wheel oval racing is on the way out, but we don't depend on ovals, now do we? Besides, my main beef with the irl is the crappy drivers, and underfunded "who the hell are they" teams. not to mention the fake racecars. If CART joins the irl, all that will be gone! No more billy boats, no more racing dentists, no more amateurs from the dirt track, and hopefully no more fake racing. Yes, with TG announcing he will not protect any irl teams I think the only hope for the irl in it's current form is a healthy CART series. Ironic, eh?
From AR1- (read the last paragraph) We hear that five very large firms are interested in sponsorship of CART's Mexico City race. As we have reported in the past, one is Toyota, the others are a South American tobacco company who are coming out with a new brand of cigarettes, a large telecommunications company, Corona, and another large Mexican firm. We hear Toyota is opening a lot of new dealerships in Mexico City, so race sponsorship fits in well for them. The most interesting news is that the promoters are starting to say they may get an attendance of 400,000 on race day. With Indy having right around 300,000 seats, and the infield crowd not being much these days, it seems almost certain now that CART's Mexico City race will displace the Indy 500 as the biggest race in the world. Feeling stupid yet Mr Zeppelin? from espn.com Roger Penske and CART champion Gil de Ferran will be in Las Vegas on Tuesday night to collect their $1 million for successfully defending their FedEx Championship, but Penske will then bid adieu to the series he helped start in 1979. It looks like Roger Penske, right, is leaving CART for the IRL and will take Gil de Ferran, left, with him. Penske is expected to have a press conference in Indianapolis next week to announce he's taking 2001 Indy winner Helio Castroneves and de Ferran to the rival IRL in 2002. It was thought the nine-time CART champions might leave de Ferran in CART to try for a third straight title but evidently that won't be happening.
