Bad racing movies and the best car chases

After a poster mocked the 'pump pedal' overtaking in Driven, the group discussed bad racing films and great car chases. Bullitt, Ronin, The French Connection, Vanishing Point and others were praised, with trivia about how the Ronin chase was filmed. Posters also shared links to the short film of a high-speed Paris run and Nürburgring videos, and Dave Henrie explained CART's real overtake button.

hi, i've watched the first 45 minutes or so of Driven. What do the Cart cars have in the pedal setup? Everytime somebody wants to overtake, there is this pump action pedal thing that the drivers do and it lets them overtake. I don't understand. Oh well... I hope the movie gets better. I might even watch the rest of it. I'm dreading to go back and watch Driver after many years. My memory probably does it too much justice. I'd had to watch it again and be disappointed. I always used to refer to the chase in Bullitt as the best car chase I'd seen, even though I'd last seen the movie > 15 years ago. I bought the DVD last year and was royally disappointed. For a bit of fun, watch the car chase and watch them use the same footage of a green beetle being passed 3 times, each time viewed from a different camera angle. I can't believe i'd never noticed it before. oh well. Regards all, istoff

I thought the Blues Brothers chase was pretty fun... Silly, yeah. But fun - especially in the mall... istoff wrote:

Call me crazy, but even though the cars aren't nearly as special as in Bullitt, the car chase scene in The Seven Ups is more exciting in my opinion. Heh, good ol' Roy Schider drives the wheels off that Ventura (or maybe it was a Nova, I don't recall at the moment.) "andrew" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Or, how about in The Rockford Files when you see the car going down the street, then coming around the corner, and it has *two less headlights*? There's a spy series on NBC (?) now called Alias, the opening credits have a Jag sedan being blown sky high, when the hood comes of you can see the sub frame, almost like somebody pulled the engine before they blew it up ;) "Doug Rogers" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

For anyone who is interested, I have the Bullitt DVD and I ripped the chase scene at very high quality into a Divx file. I can send it to you if you like (209 megs!). I can also shrink it down for those who have slower connections (i'm on T1). Let me know! Ryan

From the DVD: They used opposite-hand-drive cars, and gave a fake dash and wheel to the actors. The (rather brilliant) stunt driver flung the cars (and lucky actors) through countless gorgeous 4-wheel drifts and handbrake turns. I can't get enough of the wrong-way part of that chase. It always ruins the effect when you notice the car is stripped out, or in a flip scene when you can see the smoking hole in the bottom from where they fired the "flipper". I thought Driven was in that category of movies that are so bad they are actually fun to watch. It is indeed a terrible, terrible film, and no-one should pay to see it (I saw it on a Qantas flight from Hong Kong to Melbourne last month). The street race in the cars, for example, is ludicrous on so many levels. It's in the vein of Days of Thunder: trite dialogue, absurd plot, action that does not reflect reality in any way shape or form. Estella Warren looks pretty good. Stallone looks about 20 years too old to be driving an open-wheeler. It's crap, but to the extent of self-parody. Charger Hub caps in Bullit? I think the count was 11, heh any Steve McQueen Trivia fans know this? It's been awhile. I saw the movie when it first came out in the theaters, first hilltop drop away and your stomach was in your throat, great at the time nothing like it. Another Great Chase Scene that rivaled Bullit at the time was the early to mid 70's Original Classic "Gone In Sixty Seconds" Where 93 cars were wreaked in a 40 minute chase scene, that was done mostly on the open freeways in LA, in regular traffic! The Digitally Re-mastered version of it was on Speedvision's Lost Drive in about a couple a months ago. :-) I hope that the new "Speed Channel" keeps Bruce Dern's Lost Drive In. It's great to see those old classic Hot rod B movies from yester-year. "Hot Rods to Hell" yup that's what corrupted my life. :-) -- R.I.P. - William Joseph Dunlop OBE MBE 2/25/52 - 7/2/2000 http://www.roadracers.uk.com/legend.htm

I'm not exactly sure what a chase scene interior is, but if you mean how did they shoot insides of the cars then - Mounted Cameras! Pryce nearly crapped himself and McElhone took up racing. Franky wanted to do a good old fashioned action flick and wrote off computers from the beginning. Everything in the movie was staged using genuine theatrics and acrobatics. A true masterpiece, I can't say enough about this film. Definitely in my top ten. It's got it all, a plot, a story, writing, acting, directing, stunts, locations, intrigue, and a silver case. Ronin. :-) Great. -- "Racing! - Science for the action minded." mark "Stephen Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:KyFE7.60944$[email hidden]... > Ronin. (Frankenheimer. Yes, the chase from Ronin was superb too, but the funky music and McQueen still keeps Bullit my favorite :) PS You do know that the guy who made Roning, Frankenheimer, also made the movie Grand Prix? And now for some bad news, his next movie will be a prequel movie of The Exorcist, so no car chases I assume :) Andre

For quality car chases, I'd suggest The French Conenction and To Live and Die in L.A. are had to beat....

"The French Connection", good call, personally I liked "The Driver" and "Shaker Run", both pretty obscure movies with little in the way of a good story, but the driving was was good :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com http://www.teammirage.com "A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke" --Groucho Marx--
Yes. That music is good too. In concept Bullit and Ronin are almost identical. Good script, good actors, good music and above all realistic good action (OK I am a little bit exaggerated). Why didn't Sly hire Frankenheimer. Or even better. Why didn't or maybe he's doing it in the near future Bernie Ecclestone hire Frankenheimer. too make the movie Grand Prix again. But then better. A new F1 movie from Frankenheimer would be superb.. only let him do the car scenes and let someone else write the dialogs.. Or even better, skip the dialogs and let Frankenheimer show us 2 hours of racing :) PS The best racing action ever put on film is a short movie from Peugeot, where you see Vitanen climbing Pikes Peak (spelling?) I watched it again yesterday for the zillionth time, it's absolutely amazing what he is doing.. and totally crazy too :) It's on the net somewhere.. or perhaps you can find it with Morphieus.. Or if someone has a big upload space I'd be happy to upload it, from memory it's around 40-50mb. Andre

There's a bulb under the pedal with two hoses. One is connected to the intake, and the other is connected to a tank of Nitrous Oxide. When the pump the bulb, it shoves Nitrous into the engine. Hey, my answer is no more ridiculous than that movie was :) -Larry "istoff" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Getting back to your first point. I haven't seen the movie...but CHamp cars in the CART series have an "overtake" button. I didn't know it was or could be foot activated...I always assumed it was on the steering wheel. But it basically overides the preset limits in the engine management system. Allowing an extra short burst of acceleration. I believe it is active until the brake pedal is pushed.... Usually the system is programed to allow it's use only 2 or 3 times per race. Since using the button exceeds recomended engine parameters, it can shorten the life of the motor. A classic example of using the 'button' would be the latest CART race at Houston. Gil DeFerran was leading and Roberto Moreno was catching up. Once he closed on DeFerran, he shot by on a short straight, a place normally not long enough to gain the extra speed needed to pass...he was on the 'button' and he rocketed by the Cart Champ. dave henrie "istoff" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Yep that one is pretty cool, allthough my favorite Ring movie is the one I taped myself during my first lap on the Ring :) >It's on: http://www.sjrixon.clara.co.uk/ > >On this page is also a small amount of footage >of the Lotus 49 first win at Zandvoort in 1967! Coming soon - a friend of mine converted the movie to RM format, now I have to find some upload space somewhere.. Andre >Greetings > Klaus >
More Ring Videos can be found here: http://www.motorcycle-dk.com/en/multimedia/index.php?viewCat=1 Of course I'm kinda partial to the motorcycle laps, and have seen more car videos added since I last visited this page. I highly recommend the HiRes MPEG versions, look mighty fine. he he Cable/DSL types good way to test yer connection. -- R.I.P. - William Joseph Dunlop OBE MBE 2/25/52 - 7/2/2000 http://www.roadracers.uk.com/legend.htm

From Frankfurt to Malaysia with Malaysia Airlines here. Anybody has ever seen the banking at Hockenheim in real? I didn't. Also very nice the final race finish. Left and right car on full throttle, car in the middle with broken suspension and spinning for the last <how many?> seconds. Nevertheless the threesome passes the finish-line almost together. And so on... Cya JensSchumi On Sun, 4 Nov 2001 10:11:12 +1100, "G M Fude" <[email hidden]> wrote:
