Outlook Express hiding read messages and newsreader choices

Dave Henrie asked why Outlook Express was removing read emails, then found the 'hide read messages' view option himself. The thread turned into a comparison of mail and news clients such as Agent, Free Agent, Xnews, Eudora and Gravity, and of Outlook Express security settings.

sure lecture me about using this MS crapola....I'll listen...but something has recently changed on my system....in the past, emails that I had read would stay in the INBOX until I manually deleted them. Now as soon as I leave the email section all read emails are sent to the trash...I have searched through the tools/options and in OE5+ tools/internet options but I don't see a checkbox or setting that says/// delete the frickin email as soon as Dave reads it.. /// What setting am I overlooking? dave henrie

Makes a hell of a lot of sense in newsgroups... (to me, at least ;-) Jonny

Dave... Sound like you have the famous Outlook Express Trojan called "LSHSTGRI.dll"......oh man! When activated, it will alter your "view settings" at random. I'm giving OE a trial run since installing XP, but I've always preferred Agent for both email and news, in Agent I just select the purge read messages option manually to get rid of all the trash. OE is not bad though, it's just not a power user's choice of news reader.
"rik zeppelin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:6NSE7.23420$[email hidden]... > some guy using a phone line and one of those antique modem thingys Heh...I use a 56k modem. I did have DSL too not long ago. Problem was their news server was crap. I'm actually getting better response time from the news server at eol.ca using a 56k modem than I did at sympatico.ca using DSL. Only problem is downloading binary files is now soooo slow now.
Like the way Agent handles binary attachments (and use it for this purpose), but I like OE's interface better for general newsgroup use. And, as far as I know, it doesn't do mail? NewsXpress?? -You gotta be kidding... did they ever get that to work? Jan. =--- "Pay attention when I'm talking to you boy!" -Foghorn Leghorn. Actually, my cable connection has been a damn good experience. All the naysayers claimed it woould bog down with increased usership. NOT!! My cable is faster now than it ever has been, this almost 2 years later.
Be aware that Xnews is an online news reader. ie. you can't download all messages while online to read offline after you have disconnected the modem. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> Rafe McAuliffe <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Eudora is a hell of a lot better for email, The Bat! is also pretty > good (has a lot of controls for the user, but can be tricky > initially). > > Agent is solid and reliable, it handles email as well (though it's not > the nicest of clients). Did they remove the spyware? I think maybe I was mixing up Newsxpress with Xnews.

That is not a concern to people over here, but I can see it being to you over there considering you have to pay toll charges per minute on the phone.

Well, call me cheap but I indeed use Free Agent, as per their private single user agreement. If it indeed handles E-mail like it does (text) newsmessages, I'm sure I wouldn't like the full version better than OE. > > <snip> > The last version I tried was pretty good. I downloaded Eudora and NewsXpress when I first got on the web, but finally, out of frustration with both programs got the Plus!-pack for Win95 and haven't really looked into other readers/clients since. What kind of frustration could Eudora give? I have been using it for many, many years without a hitch. I also did not have to worry about any of those virus' that target OE and email everyone in my address book. I use Eudora for email and Gravity for newsgroups. -- Skotty Flynn http://www.nascar-racing-sims.com

You don't have to worry about it in OE either if people just set the options to be safe. I'm using OE 6 now for email and there is an option to stop attachments opening automatically. Also setting email and news to plain text only is an option which will stop any malicious activeX or java script from running.

<snip> No they ain't! Well, the emails are because I read them in Outlook and then archive them to a directory structure; but I've got a rule set up in OE which deletes ng posts after three weeks (or whatever number I thought of at the time ;-) I can see that a few things such as coloured quoting would be nice, but otherwise I like the OE interface and find it thoroughly convenient for off-line reading (I'm not paying for connection time, but I prefer not to tie up my phone line while I'm reading the ~500 new messages I get each day). Now, for ultimate news-and-email I reckon Pine is the way to go ;-) although it won't remind me about that bill that needs paying next week, or that doctor's appointment... Jonny

You are correct. But the default install options leave everything wide open. That's a mistake by MS, in my opinion. Most people running OE or variants don't have a CLUE about how vulnerable their system is with it. I agree, Eudora has been problem free and reliable for many years for me. Not as customisable as i would like, that's about it. But a very well put-together program. Rafe Mc
