Sorry if this has been asked in the past but I recently upgraded to WinME from Win98 after I got a bad virus and reformatted my harddrive. N4 worked great under Win98 but it seems to be struggling under WinME. My framerates just crawl at startup of a race but then get better as the race progresses, but then become brutal again about 5 minutes later. I'm using the same config I used under 98 (OpenGL as well as Tom's tweaks) but the gameplay is way worse now. I have an Athlon 1Ghz T-bird board with a GeForce2 MX 32 meg card and 384 megs of RAM. Again, all worked fine under 98 but are terrible using ME. Is there conflicts with Athlon boards/GeForce cards and WinME I should know about that is causing this poor gameplay? Appreciate any help.

Ian P posted this some time ago - this may be of help to you (or, it might be competely wide of the mark, but it cured everything for me) This was posted here a while back with regards to Windows ME. It may help ;) 1. Disable System Restore. Open Control Panel -> System -> Performance Tab -> File System - > Troubleshooting area -> Disable System Restore (While you are in this window click on the Floppy Disk tab and uncheck the box so the system doesn't check for a NEW floppy drive every time it starts.) ~~ 2. Uninstall Pc Health. Start / Run "\windows\pchealth\support\pchsetup /uninstall" ~~ 3. Turn off Automatic Updating. (This will hog your modem for 30 mins every day when you first go on line if you don't turn it off.) Start / Settings / Taskbar / Advanced then check Expand Control Panel and close and go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Automatic Updates and turn OFF Automatic Updating ~~ 4. Use ram memory rather than the swap file. (The system needs OVER 64 megs of ram.) Start / Search / Files type and enter: "system.ini" then click on it and open it in Notepad and add this line after [386Enh] (without quotes) "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" ~~ 5. Set file system to cache about 20 times higher than its default setting. Copy and paste these lines to Notepad and name the file MaxCached.reg then click on MaxCached.reg from Windows Explorer and say Yes you want to add that information to your registry. (You must set Notepad to "all files" when you save it or it will save as text.) -------------------------------- copy below ---------------------------------- REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates] @="Max Cache" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates\Max Cache] @="Max Cache" "NameCache"=hex:00,18,00,00 "PathCache"=hex:80,00,00,00 ------------------------------- to above ------------------------------------ ~~ 6. Disable these settings in the start menu. Start / Run type and enter: "Msconfig" then click on Startup and UNCHECK PcHealth, StateMgr, SchedulingAgent and Taskmon Then allow the system to reboot so all these changes will take effect. ~~ 7. Run Windows Explorer and click on Tools / Folder Options / View and select "Show hidden files and folders" then browse the c: drive and delete the _Restore folder. Hold your shift key so it doesn't move it to the recycle bin while you press del. This folder can have hundreds of megs of temp files if you have been running ME for a while with the system Restore and PC Health on. If you get an error message saying there is a sharing violation you haven't successfully turned off Pc Health and Restore. The _Restore folder should NOT appears again in the future (unless you update a key Microsoft program like IE). ~~ 8. See if anything unnecessary is running all the time. Press CTRL + ALT + DEl at the same time, after you have first booted up and see what programs are loaded. You may find several programs running that don't need to run all the time. Most of them, if actually needed, can be loaded from the Start / Programs menu. ~~ 9. Don't let windows run HTA, SHS and VBS Script automatically. Those file associations allow viruses to infect your system. Open Windows Explorer and click Tools / Folder Options / File Types and delete HTA, SHS and VBSscript. It is very unlikely a normal PC user would need those file associations turned on. ~~ 10. Disable "Automatic check for Windows Explorer updates" From the IE "Tools" menu click on "Internet Options" then go to "Advanced" and uncheck the 4th box.

I have a 1.4 TBird, 256mb ram, a geforce2mx and run WinME. I have a 350watt PSU if that makes any difference. Works fine- sears point is a bit choppy in places, but the speedways are all 40-60fps regular. Have you switched off "system restore" nothing kills your pc faster than windows backing up the registry etc every five minutes. On one install on winMe I had, it actually filled up the hard disk to 0 free space with "restore" files. You'll find the option in the performance tab (right click my computer- choose properties?) cheers John

B_English; I would be careful about removing PC Health, and System restore, when I did this I lost my "Search for Files and Folders" function, and "System Information". I know that System Information keep saying a dll from PC Heath was needed and not loading. Don't know about the file search, just will not post any results. Now I had problems trying to remove System Restore, kept coming back, heh I guess that's part of System Restore. I used a utility "System Restore Remover Pro v1.5 Final" from www.definition-software.com to get it removed. Whether this utility did more removal of something than the process in the posts of this thread?? Who knows. Most of this stuff can be disabled by editing the registry in the run or run services lines. http://www.regedit.com/ can be a help in this area. As far as the "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" and "Set file system to cache about 20 times higher than its default". Swapfile Usage, I saw a definite performance loss, "set file cache" was not tried. This is what I use for a hard drive cache in the system.ini file. I used to use a larger setting ala Windows NT, but in a bulletin from MS, this can degrade performance in WinME, (sorry no link to knowledge base). [vcache] MinFileCache=51200 MaxFileCache=56320 Also disabling things in "Msconfig" kept bringing up a dialog box saying that the startup is other than "normal" on every boot up. That is why I went into the registry an deleted the values in the "Run" & "Run services". Microsoft Office, versions 97, 2000 and XP, get rid of the search function, "Find File" or whatever it's called, that will run allot! Run & Run Services in registry editing will stop this. Now if you just use your computer for gaming (who does?) and can do with the quirks of these posted edits OK. but.... I would look into changing your video drivers, I use the NVIDIA v7.97 (4.12.01.0797) with WinME and work good in Nascar 4, GPL, NFSHS & PU, Q3, but suck in Unreal Tournament.
