Playing RBR at the weekend with my 5 year old son around, I wrapped the
car around a tree and the audio launched into "ouch, shit". Now I am a
modern parent (not in the Viz mode though!), but I don't want my 5 year
old running around the playground yelling that out, and he sometimes
plays RBR (he likes crashing!). Is there any way to turn that
particular bit of vocal feedback off?
Cheers!

Hit him if he says it! Spare the rod, spoil the child, I always say.

Perhaps there's a WAV or MP3 file somewhere in the program directory that
can be replaced (rename the old version, don't delete it).
In article <KF3cf.6570$[email hidden]>,

Don't think there is. It looks like all audio files are stored in the
audio.dat file (think that's it). Apparently this can be extracted and
all files copied to an audio folder that you would need to create.
Possibly then the file would then be changeable. Not sure how to
extract from the .dat file though.

The GTA series audio files usually get hacked to allow the radio files to be
put on CD. However, even if you could extract the .DAT, it's unlikely the
program would use the extracted files rather than the original .DAT.
Sorry - looks like you're stuck with the expletives. If it's any
consolation - my six-year-old learns far more dubious words in the
playground than he does on any of his video games.

shouldn't you be more concerned about him liking to crash?

Well here's what they say in their audio.ini file at the bottom. So, no
reason why it's not doable.
; Audio.DAT information!
; 1) Extract all Audio.dat files somewhere (with the directory
structure)
; I have seen tools around that extracts .dat files.
; Try Richard Burns Rally forums at www.bhmotorsports.com to find
one.
; 2) Copy the extracted Audio directory to your installed RBR folder
; creating a new folder called Audio
; 3) Rename the Audio.dat file to something else (audio.data works nice
or whatever pleases you)
; 4) The game will now read audio data from the new Audio folder.
;
; This should make audiomoding a little bit easier.

Doable, perhaps, but beyond my capabilities... ;o)

Don't be daft!
I remember playing with toy cars thirty years ago, and the first thing I did
was smash them together. It's what kids do...

either remove whatever mod you've got on that added that effect in, or
extract the audio and find the corresponding wave. specifics should be
available at bhm.

Are you saying that that isn't in the vanilla RBR? I have added some
essential mods (which ones I can't recall off the top of my head), but
I had assumed that the "shit" was built in (no, not a comment on the
software itself!)
If so, removing the mod would be the best idea. I'll have a look.

I never heard that dirty, soul-stealing word in my copy of RBR, so I
guess it's part of a mod you installed. And by God Almighty, my co would
have had reason enough to swear at me loudly during all those barrel
rolls. ;)

Indeed! I'd call it a guide to proper use of profanity. After all, he's
not saying "right f***ing six, eighty..."
If you can't swear when you crash into a tree, when can you? ;-)
