Aliens challenge Tom Pabst to a Nürburgring GPL race
Following the hotlapper row, Andre Warringa assembled a line-up of top GPL drivers, including Greger Huttu and Luke McLean, for a Nürburgring race against Tom Pabst, with much mockery of Pabst. The thread became a nostalgic discussion of burnout, with Goy Larsen and others saying they had lost interest in sim racing since TEN closed, and NASCAR Heat mods noted as keeping some interested. Some posters urged the group to let Pabst be.
Automated summary.
Hi Tom,
So far I found a couple of guys willingly to join the Ring race.
Here's the lineup so far, along with a short introduction:
- Greger Huttu (well.. you heard of him I hope :)
- Luke Mclean (oy, he's number 3 on GPLRank)
- Andreas Wilke (7th, not 100% sure he will join though)
- David Powell (easy to win from him, he's only 19th on GPLRank)
- Marc Royal (easy too, nr. 21 on that meaningless GPLRank)
- Niels Heusinkveld (nr. 27, and he's only average on the Ring with a
7.51 pb)
- Jan Verschueren (not as fast as Huttu but he knows how to finish
those full distance races)
- Eldred Pickett (he has a handicap of 0 in the St.Eldred Cup)
- And me. I'm err.. 416th on GPLRank (oh man this is depressing) but
since I'm not an Alien, I'm bound to win this race, right :)
I asked Greg Stewart, number 2 on GPLRank, but his answer was (and he
allowed me to quote)
" I really wouldnt like to give him the satisfaction that we even
think he would have a chance in a month of sundays"
Before I contact some more people, please let me know if the race is
still on.

Okay, 15 laps @ sub 8 mins for the Aliens. JV & StE doing 8:30s. I can just
picture it: Trying to avoid getting lapped near the end, Eldred takes out
the leader at Tiergarten. They both try to get their 3-wheeled cars rolling
again and the rest of the alien field is caught in the wreck. Wheels &
bodies everywhere. None of them are able to continue and 8 minutes later,
the Cooper driven by Jan crosses the finish line in triumph!
"But wait, what about Andr?" I hear you ask. Well, he fell asleep before
the start and never showed up. He was nicely rested after the race, though.

Uh, if you are really short of drivers, I might consider joining.
Not really alien, but I'm famous on the Internet for being able to put
people to sleep with my dazzling driving skills and extraordinary car
control. Or something.

No, he actually disappeared up his own arsehole. Apparently he was
walking along the street when it happened. Passers by heard his
terrified screams but there was nothing they could do to help.
The police were quickly on the scene, but after interviewing witnesses
they conceded that there was nothing they could do either.
Stg Steve Leamington Spa III of the Betatestersville Co. Sheriff's
Department made this statement, "We've examined the scene but thus far
all we've discovered is one pubic hair! And we're not even sure if it
belonged to Mr Fisher. All I can say at this stage is we're keeping an
open mind."
Eye witness Larry GP Legend Jr had this to say when interviewed at the
scene by reporters, "Poor guy, He was just walking along when all of a
sudden he just started to disappear up his own asshole - terrible way to
go, man!"
Should we have a RAS silent tribute?
Other strange reports are filtering through the worlds news media: This
time of a top, as yet unnamed, Winston Cup Driver who has been seen
walking around with Tom Pobst's feet hanging out the back of his arse.
Typical of Tom, he couldn't disappear up his own arsehole, he had to use
someone else's <g>.

Well, that promise was made back when we thought it would be possible to
convert the Ring to N3, most GPL tracks can be driven within a couple of
seconds of the best GPL time with an N3 car
You'll never see me do a sub 9 min lap at the Ring though, pretty much
retired from sim racing now, the upcoming BR1000 race this coming
weekend could well be my last online race as I no longer feel the urge
to sit down and race, been good fun though, met a lot of great people
and made some friends, I'd say I got a lot out of my simracing.....

I actually find it quite understandable as I fully understand how Goy feels.
Only recently, with the launch of OLR, have I had any kind of urge to sim
race on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong, I still love GPL and a few
other simes, but the true enthusiasm I once had has been eaten away
gradually with the demise of TEN, and a host of very suspect, at best, sim
releases.

Well, my problem is a combination of several things in fact
I've been simracing for 10 years or something, ever since
GP1/WorldCicuit was released on the Atari ST, I work with computers for
a living, up until now there hasn't really been a central place to race
since TEN died and last but not least, none of the current sims
represent a racing series that hold much interest for me
The only thing that looks sort of promising are the HEAT mods, such as
the DTM and I believe someone is working on an AussieV8 series as well,
but what else is there when you look at it, if you're not into F1 that
is
GPL, well, yeah it's good, but I'm not really interested
N4, can't seem to warm up to it, and oval racing is boring
STCC 1/2, uh, well, not too bad, but a bit "light" perhaps
SCGT, too old
WSC, no interest whatsoever
Various modern F1 sims, see above
Various modern rally sims, see above
Rally Trophy, this one I might install when it comes out actually
MCO, did some OpenBeta testing, fun for a while
HEAT, oval racing is boring :-)
DTR, oval racing is boring on dirt as well :-)
HEAT mods, *could* be good, still in it's infancy and doesn't have
widespread support yet, but it's one of the few reasons I stick around,
MP is a bit of an issue though
I've probably missed something, but basically, I find little of interest
in the current crop of sims, so when an old friend of mine wants us to
rent part of an old barn and start working on our road cars again, take
them to the local track days and such, I think I'd rather do that to be

Yes LOL you sure do remember ;-)
I know I probably won't be able with N4. Sure it's more realistic, but hey
after 5 years of driving the old game engine (1994's N1 to N3), most of us
could do anything on road course with those cars, we had mastered them
perfectly. Every feedback on screen was easily understood and applied the
correct treatment by our wheel/pedals.

Yeah, I just don't understand why Goy wouldn't like WSC, considering it's

TEN was more than a place to race N2, it was a place to meet people,
hang out and then race if you could gather a nice crowd, at it's best it
was pretty incredible, at it's worst it was very frustrating, but I'll
remember it as a positive experience and a place where I got to know
some really nice people, much in the same way that the GPL enthusiasts
think of the VROC community I guess, but I never really warmed to Nascar
racing, which is why I jumped at every chance to race at WG or SP,
skilled or unskilled races, but it was the "community" thing that hold
the most appeal to me, that and the fact that all the servers was
located in one place, so if you managed to optimize your connection to
that place, you were set
As for sim, I guess I'd like to see a full blown touring car sim of some
sorts, AussieV8's preferably, but I'll settle for DTM, BTCC/STCC or
Trans-Am, the less high tech the better and the Aussie series would suit
me just fine, and a historic touring car sim would be bliss, or maybe a
historic sports car sim with Aston Martin DB's, Jaguar E-types and that
sort of thing.......

You, Andre, and Thom have proved how much damage too much GPL can do to a
tiny mind.
For anyone who's life is so boring that they actually want an explanation
for this........one day Eldred announced he was hosting a GPL online race. I
replied with an "I'll be there!".
Anyone who's familiar with me (even a little) here would know that was an
obviously sarcastic, joking reply. I haven't even had the game installed on
my computer for probably two years.
Nice try guys. I'm sure you fooled at least two or three r.a.s. visitors.

Seriously, the way in which Tom decided to present his argument justifies
every bit of piss-taking he receives IMO.
Besides, regardless of whether Tom takes up the challenge or not, I'd like
to see this race go ahead. It's not every day one gets a chance to see the
masters practise their craft live and first hand.

Ah, more proof that you cannot anymore have a rationale position on the

There's a pebble at the lesmos that you don't know about.
After 4,879 laps there, I really shouldn't have to alert you to these things
anymore. I don't want you to lose the "big race" because of that tiny little
pebble.

F12001 now. I only have a couple of hours with it (new system finally allows
me to play it), but it seems like it will be worth the effort if I can get
the steering sorted out. F1RC2 (supposedly released in Dec.) could take me
away from it though. I'll just have to wait and see how it plays. I'm going
to buy RT too.
Even if I had an unmilited number of tracks, I just don't see how anyone
could want to drive the same handful of cars from the same sim for three
years. Simple as that.

My god, you must find living in our world totally impossible. Impossible to
have challenges, to be entertained, or to set personal goals.
Those real-life racing guys must find it boring to "drive the same handful
of cars" all those years.
What's the difference between going from F1RC to F12001 compared to a Lotus
to a Ferrari? Absolutely nothing.

I'm sorry Dave, but isn't that like telling Eric Clapton that you can't
understand why he keeps playing the guitar after all this time, that he
should move on to another instrument ?
If all we had was the original cars and tracks, then yes I could see
your point, but with all the add ons and tracks that people can choose
from now; I can certainly see why people are still enthusiastic over
this sim, even if I'm not driving it anymore myself

(not nearly as bright as the cartoon pair) followed with some insults. Andre

You don't like them, they don't like you. So be it. IMO your only options
are to either avoid them (which is hard to do on a newsgroup) or learn to
live with it.

Not entirely unprovoked I think, but that's just a hunch on my part as to
what Alex took offence to. See below.

As I see it *you* took advantage of Pabsts post to spout your same old
offensive theory about long time GPL racers and again faign suprise as it
ruffles peoples feathers.
I let that go before, but seeing as you now accuse me of putting you on the
defensive for a couple of fairly innocent comments, I thought I'd bring it
up.
Besides, everyone here can expect to find him/herself at the receiving end
of some stick at one time or another and your past dealings with the group
make the probability of this happening even greater, so who's actually
whining here?

driver than someone who can only run 1:40. It's an objective ranking. Even if
you want to collect stats for race wins, pole positions, etc - that data
changes arbitrarily. Someone might have 10 race wins, but he's only running
against novices. Would you see him as a better sim driver than someone who
finished last in a race of 'aliens'?

Just
So I was right and you were wrong.
As usual.
Eldred admitted tonight that he was wrong with his accusations.
He said, "Correct - I have seen a few umprovoked shots at you. But, 95% of
the time,
YOU'RE the one who initiates the insults. You'll jump into a GPL or NASCAR
thread, toss a few putdowns/cheap shots, then bitch when people respond."
I gave him the facts and he responded with, "Ok, I stand corrected - based
on that search, most of your posts are in the
threads you mention above. It seems like you've responded more than that
search shows, though."
Andre, maybe you better have your girlfriend write your posts here for you
while she's still in awe over your momo.

You know Eldred, reading this reply brought to mind DGF's crowing
earlier in the year about how Montoya was such an inferior driver, based
in large part upon differences in his qualifying times with RS. Seems
he switches his opinions on these matters to suit him. Faster
hotlapping is only a skill factor when you can use it against JPM, but
is irrelevant when it comes to GPL racers. Go figure...

I hotlap. I've done it in order to qualify for an online contest. I've done
it to try and in the F1RC demo competition at BHM (finished 4th or 5th).
Comparing hotlapping times for a particular sim becomes irrelevent after
awhile (especially three years!) though. That's my point, and I have made
this very clear in previous posts.
BTW, when JPM and any other F1driver are qualifying, there is a million
miles difference between that and sim hotlapping. You know what the
differences are and that is why I say you are playing dumb.

I'll say it one last time. Hotlapping in auto sims can only be used to
measure a person's abilities if you know how much time they have spent to
get their results (which is almost always impossible).

Good for you! Unlike some, I wouldn't put someone down for trying &
doing their best in a competition.

True, it's a horse you have beaten into the ground. But you've never
made it *clear* at all. Like many have tried to get across to you,
there is no difference between hotlapping a particular sim for three
years & running the same Saturday night events for years & years at your
local shorttrack in Real Life.

There is no difference at all. In each scenario you have 2 drivers who
are pitting their skills against each other on the same circuit. Each
pair of drivers is equally bound by the
same surrounding conditions as their counterpart. In that way, there is
no difference whatsoever. But deep down you know that...

You've said that many times. What Eldred is asking is WHY you assert
that point. It doesn't matter to you that RS has much more F1 seat time
than does JPM, *why* does it differ in sims??

From what I hear, use of CTFJ can improve controller handling to the
point it makes it palatable. Second hand word... I don't own it
myself. Also, Bodin is working on a SoS37 mod for NASCAR Heat.

According to Bodin: yes
According to the rest of the world: no.
(Note: this was a joke, Bodin actually found a way to make Sos37 a bit
more playable..)
But Bodin is working '30s cars addon for Nascar Heat, including new
physics, which looks very promising.
For the rest, after 3 years, GPL is still king..
unfortunately I might add.
Last week the big news was announced though:
GPL2 is in the works :D

I'm probably the only person in the NG who hasn't bought NHeat, but with

I gather no one knows much about the putative GPL2, though I for one
would much rather see 1970-72 than '82 -- Tyrrells, Ferrari 312Bs,
Matras, Marches, the last of the semi-functional BRMs, Lotus 72s and
that lot -- but that's only because I'm old, and think real motorsport
