ACT Labs pedals with a Logitech wheel and split axes

MadDAWG asked whether the new ACT Labs pedals would work with his Logitech wheel. Posters explained that the USB pedals appear as a separate controller, so they need sims that support multiple controllers; GPL, N4 and F1 2001 do, and a NASCAR Heat patch added it. Raymond from ACT Labs said only two pedal breakages had been officially reported and explained the cracking sound.

Currently I have the Logitech FF wheel and I'm thinking about upgrading/updating with ACT LABS. I'm think about going one of two ways. The first (cheap) way is to get the new ACT LABS pedals. Is there any problems doing this? From reading their site it sounds like to me you need a game capable of seeing 2 controllers to use a set up like this. I don't think this would be a problem with any of the titles I have, but does anyone know of some were it is a problem? The nice part about this is I can spread the cost out over time although it would cost more in the end. The second way is to get the full ACT LABS package. Can you get the new pedals without getting the old ones? It looked/sounded like that you would still get the old ones as well. Also if you don't get the old ones and still want a split axis setup will it wok ok? I took it from the website that with the new pedals hooked up in place of the originals you can only have combined brake/accel axis. Can I hook up the new pedals with USB and not have the originals under the desk? I have limited floor space and two sets of pedal under my desk would be a problem. TIA MadDAWG

Yes this would work, but do it fast, then again you may be too late already as they are/were running out fast of the current stock. ACT Labs is hoping to have another shipment before the holidays.

You can not order the wheel without the old pedals. Yes, from what I understand you are correct on the split axis with using USB. I was thinking about TSW because I want a larger dia wheel, but I like FF as well. I did find a website that shows you how to install a aftermarket wheel to an ACT LAB wheel so I think I may have a winner, now I just got to pay for it. :) MadDAWG
The Logitech MOMO is pretty decent. I'm using the new 3-pedal Act Labs system with a Logitech FF wheel and it works fine. It's split axis (the clutch, brake, and throttle are each a different axis) and plugs into the USB port. The Act Labs pedals show up as a separate controller, so I assume they'll only work with sims that can recognize a second controller. GPL works fine, as does F1 2001. I think you'll still need to have the old pedals, unless you can remove them from the Act Labs wheel. In the case of the Logitech, the power and other circuits run through the pedals, so I have to leave them attached. But I put them back out of the way, since they aren't used unless I want to run some game that can't see two controllers. Hopefully you can find someplace for them, maybe leaning up against a wall or something. Alison On Wed, 14 Nov 2001 13:11:21 GMT, "MadDAWG" <[email hidden]> wrote:

The AL wheel will work with the pedals unplugged from the wheel. Ken Alison Hine wrote:

Bear in mind, there are several games that don't recognize two controlers, even if you get the AL wheel & pedals separately, as I was thinking of doing. I believe the list includes at least some of the following: GPL, N4, NH, F1 2001, and Rally Trophy. The MOMO wheel is starting to look a lot more attractive. This was posted by Tom Hesselman a week or so ago: ------------------------------------------------------------ Just received my Act Labs Performance Pedals. Have I got this right, there is no way to get separate axis on pedals in games that don't support two controllers? I hook up the pedals USB, they are a separate device and only those game supporting two controllers work. I hook up the pedals to the RS Force, and no separate axis. This pretty much sucks. I'm going to use my LWFF (with it's heavily modded pedals!) and the Act Labs pedals, I guess, and will only be able to use the Act Labs pedals in games that support two controllers. If I'm missing something, can someone tell me what? Right now I'm doing rally games, RC2000, CMR2, and hopefully later this week, RT. Can't use the new pedals, haven't been able to use them YET! Sigh...... -----------------------------------------------------------
There have also been a few reports of the brake pedal on the new performance pedals breaking. Reports are still limited however maybe there is a design flaw? Check Act Labs forums for details. Hopefully it's just a result of people being overly excited pressing the brakes too hard :) "MadDAWG" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3bf27d31$[email hidden]... > Currently I have the Logitech FF wheel and I'm thinking about > upgrading/updating with ACT LABS. Follow up, somewhat! I hear on AL Forums that I can hook up my pedals to the Force RS, and the clutch to USB adapter/USB. With an old v2.1 cartridge (nearly ALL out there?), I'm s'posed to be able to get split axis for gas/brake and have wheel/gas/brake show as one device.. It's a PITA to uninstall Logitech software, plug all the AL stuff back up and try, but I'm gonna give it a go soon. If that works, and I can get separate axis for gas/brake, I'll be relatively happy since I can use it that way in games that don't support two controllers. If it doesn't work, uninstall all AL stuff, reinstall all Logi stuff, sigh......again. Later On Wed, 14 Nov 2001 20:54:51 GMT, "Stephen Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote:

GPL and N4 do recognize more than one controller. At least on my PC, under Windows 98, they do. FWIW: In my experience, from that list, GPL, N4 and F1 2001 all DO recognize multiple controllers. NH does not. Don't know about Rally Trophy (although the demo apparently does not). Stephen Smith wrote:

That's two. Forgot to mention all those rally sims that may or may not recognize two controllers. (In the Rally Trophy demo, I couldn't even get it to recognize one joystick, much less a wheel and/or one set of pedals...or, as they spell it universally on the Internet, "peddles.") Follow up. Sure enough, if you connect AL Performance Pedal pedal connector to the wheel, and connect the clutch connector to the USB adapter, you get two controllers in Game Controllers, one is just the clutch. The wheel/pedal thing can have split axis, so it works in games that support only one controller and still let you have separate axis control. Cool, I'm happy now. I like the AL pedals WAY better in the Rally sims I'm currently playing. I kind of like my modded LWFF wheel a little better, it's a bit smoother with the ball bearings in it, but the LWFF pedals, even heavily modded with springs and bumpers, suck compared to these AL pedals. I will learn to love the Force RS wheel. Forces are nice, stronger (?), just not as smooth, kind of notchy. But, even tho' I've had it for a year or so, I haven't used it much because the original AL pedals sucked worse than the original LWFF pedals!! I think that's telling us something! I have three controllers and in XP they all showed up beautifully in Control Panel on install as well as in the Rally Trophy Demo. Configuration was flawless in RT for me. I see these in the demo: Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP - Act Labs High Performance Pedals - Act Labs RS Shifter - Keyboard - Mouse. I may be slightly misquoting the descriptions as I am at the office, but I was impressed with how RT pulled all the exact information and settings directly from Control Panel and DirectX. Hello, Actually, the exact number of official reports that we have received of the Performance Pedals breaking is 2...Two...yep...just two. Other people have reported hearing a sound which sounds like a crack. However, that sound is simply the ball holder shifting under heavy pressure. Nothing actually breaks. :) These things have a tendency to get out of hand, you know. In case you are interested, we have shipped THOUSANDS of units and only had 2 confirmed reports. We calculated the RMA return for this product to be LESS than 0.05%. For those who are mathematically challenged, that means that we get less than 1 reported "failure" for every 2000 units that we ship. We obviously do a LOT of stress testing with our units and still have yet to be able to produce any failure. In fact, the only way we could get any of the pedals to break is to literally JUMP on it. FYI, I weigh 192 pounds and couldn't break it easily. I had to jump on several times to get it to crack. To further the point, I work out regularly and squat 315, leg press 630, and calf raises with 345. I play with these pedals daily and have not have any failure with my set at home or at work. From what we have researched, the failure is a result of people pressing the pedals BEYOND their intended range. Obviously, any device would break under those circumstances. As for games that support multiple input devices, you will see more and more of this. We speak to game developers regularly and are getting feedback from all the major ones that multiple input controllers will be featured in ALL their future titles. The 1.5 patch for Nascar Heat added multiple controller support, as does the latest Viper Racing patch. Of course the official Infogrames Nascar heat page only links to the old 1.1 patch, but I guess five months of us requesting them to update the link was insufficient. It looks like if you go to the main infogrames site and choose support-->patches you can find the 1.5 patch. -Dave Pollatsek MGI "David L. Sorry to imply there was a problems, just stating what I read. However in one sentence you say you jumped on them and they didn't break but then you go on to say some are breaking/cracking by pressing beyond their range. I would suspect if people broke even one with more use by pressing beyond the range then there is no way you jumped on them and they didn't break. All is fine until I plug in the shifter, then it won't recognize the gas or clutch on the Act pedals. GPL on the other hand... perfect. Thanks! Jim On Thu, 15 Nov 2001 12:11:51 -0500, "David L.
