3DMark 2001 benchmarks and nostalgia for DOS memory

Answering a question about 3DMark 2001, posters said it is a synthetic DirectX 8 benchmark that is useful for testing tweaks but poor at predicting sim performance, and argued over whether it favours nVidia. Goy Larsen criticised nVidia's driver churn and ATI's beta-quality releases. The thread drifted into running games with firewalls on, nostalgic boasts about freeing conventional memory in DOS for F1GP and flight sims, and Monty Python skits.

It's a benchmarking program that looks simply amazing. There is a Matrix-like scene that can be played with full sound and music. Very impressive. Easy to use. I tried the Raedon 8500 and the NVidia Ti500 and 3DMark 2001 gave the Raedon 8500 a better score... Oki, I just noticed when I did a bit of bench marking a good while that even though a card scored worse than another in 3DMark, it might still run NHeat and MBTR, which I used to have some actual sims to compare with, just as well as the card which scored better in 3DMark, which more often than not was an nVidia based card, and I talked to another hardware enthusiast about it, and he was of the same opinion.... Guess all card manufacturers now writes drivers to score well in 3DMark and Quake 3, hopefully they'll soon write drivers which will give us better performance in games as well....:-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com http://www.teammirage.com "A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke" --Groucho Marx--

Yeah, thank god ATI released a perfect example of what vid cards should be. That Radeon 8500 was shipped only after they enabled all the onboard features and final drivers for it. P.S. Those with sarcasm detectors, i apologize. Please send copies of the repair bills to my e-mail addy for full compensation. Sorry Goy, but unless ive indulged in too many beers and cheers, i seem to remember this same type of discussion with every vid card and most software ever invented. I wont even bother comparing flawed product release with the automotive industry. If ya really want to own something trouble free and unchanged in basic design, invest in Pez dispensers ! As usual, thanks fer listening :)

Actually, I didn't even mention ATI's latest release as I think it's just another example of letting paying customers do your beta testing, but there you go, I'm just happy that nVidia has gotten some serious competition, maybe that'll get them both to improve on their tradition when it comes to drivers.... Well, aren't you the lucky one, we build a couple of hundred systems every year and I'm the one who does most of the tech support..... "Hello, how may I help you" "Hey, we bought this computer just two weeks ago and "so and so" games won't run" "Ok, there's a new driver out from nVidia, have you tried installing that one" "What's a driver......" <sigh> "Ok, what you need to do is <insert appropriate explanation here>, see if that helps" "Ok thx" --- one hour later --- "Hi it's me again" "Sorry, who is this again" "Me with the PC problems" <sigh> "Ok, please remind me again, what problems were you having" "so and so games won't work and you told me to DL and install the latest driver and it didn't help" "Ok, what we're gonna do now is to try an install an older driver and see if that helps, if you come down to the shop I'll have them on a CD for you or you can DL them from this web site" etc etc, but with a bit of luck we'll soon find a driver which works for their PC, then they DL and run 3DMark or some other BM tool, and we get another phone call "Hey, that driver you told me to install slowed my PC by almost 10% in Q3, I can now only get 85 fps ......." <big sigh> I miss DOS, all we had to worry about then was Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, XMS, EMS, Smartdrive, Memmaker, conventional memory, mousedrivers and drivers for your soundcard and you were all set, unless you wanted to play "Aces over Europe" of course, in which case you needed at least 605k of conventional memory.........oh never mind Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com http://www.teammirage.com "A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke" --Groucho Marx--

No....the R8500 gets better benchmarks than the GF3 Ti 500 on 3D Mark 2001. It's the games where the 8500 usually falls behind. All 3D Mark is really good for is benchmarking your own system as you try various tweaks, new drivers etc. That way you can easily tell if the new drivers and tweaks improve performance or not.

Well, that's better than a customer who has an ATI card and calls up with the same problem. "Sorry, you are shit out of luck because there are no new drivers".
Quite true, 3D Mark is purely a synthetic benchmark and has no direct relation to how well games will run. Manufacturers do optimise their drivers toward it because high scores sell well. We need them to take more notice of GPL and N4 frame rates for comparison. Maybe a timedemo of these would be a good tool for this. And yes, it is biased towards the GF3, mainly because it takes full advantage of all the DX8 features of it. Rafe Mc On Fri, 16 Nov 2001 22:35:35 +0100, Goy Larsen <[email hidden]> wrote:

After testing those two cards I actually ended up buying the Ti200. Most bang for the buck IMHO. Funny thing is in Rally Trophy this card performs better at higher resolutions running 32-bit color. I get a better framerate at 1280x1024x32 (40-50fps) than I do at 1024x768x16 (30-40fps) go figure... I'm not complaining though! Maybe.....but is it "good" ? Just because you do something a little better than someone else doesn't automatically make it a good product, seems to me like ATI is playing nVidia's own game, which is a shame really, but as long as there's some real competition out there.... Well, I guess I should have said that 3DMark is biased towards the same line of thinking that nVidia has, so rather than test for something useful, like how it will run my current crop of games, it tells me how some of my future games might run on one card vs another....:-), also, I do get a bit skeptical when one brand of computers has advertising on a benchmark....... 3dmark2001 is aimed at DX8. That is why, if you are more concerned about current sims, the better benchmark would be 3dmark2000. The problem still with benchmarks, is, I can tweek my system and almost double my scores...but I don't use it at those settings. So If I want to trumpet how well my sytem works, I can choose a bunch of options in my vid card properties that will definately speed things up...but the visual cost means as soon as the test is over, I go back to my cleaner, better looking and slower-benchmarking settings. Which kinda defeats the purpose of a benchmark...... dave henrie "Goy Larsen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Hiya Jake, don't you have a NG to nurse or something ? :-) Yeah, Aces over Europe was tricky, I was lucky I didn't have a Soundblaster card back then, had some MediaForte card or something, very small drivers, but with some serious settings in memmaker you could *just* make it, and boy was I happy when I got 4 extra 30 pin memory modules, bringing me up from 4 to 8 MB of RAM....... 590k? Pah! F1GP needed 600000 bytes (586k), and my hand-written config files easily achieved something like 618k IIRC. Now, the ultimate evolution was my batch file system which, when you requested Descent for example (through 'games launcher' - "gl desc"): - swapped the config files to a totally stripped set (wasn't DOS/4GW wonderful? Conventional memory... what's that?) - rebooted - ran Descent (having first loaded a mouse driver) - on exit, asked for confirmation then swapped the config files back to the default - returned to the front-end menu, consisting of Windows (press W), DOS (press D) or reboot (R) I think I ended up with about six or seven different configs, for a variety of games plus a general one and a Windows one! Turning off the firewall is plain silly,- especially if you are using a fullscreen game which hinders your ability to see what is going on in your pc. (Not that you always can see attacks - far from it). A good virus scanner will not hamper your performance,- at least not on my system. Most games are graphics card limited (fillrate etc.). Thus you do have cpu power to spare. And even if you didn't, how many files are opened when you are in the game? And will adding 1% to the disk access time really make a difference? In my opinion, there is a negligible performance hit - if any! The very human worst case scenario is returning to VROC after a race and checking your mail w/o turning on your AV scanner first. If you are using Outlook Express the preview window can be abused to run viral scripts, unless you have disabled active scripting in OE. Too bad, so sad, bye-bye. In conclusion, if you can't run your games without shutting down your AV and FW, you should consider reducing the graphics (or other) settings. Otherwise you're playing with fire and deserve what you get! YOU were the one who wanted +1 fps instead of security. But the choice is your to make,- I've made mine. Finally, this pc is actually rather secure as all external network connections are routed to another pc, but occasionally I switch IPs and I'd rather not risk forgetting to turn my security back on. Right! In my day you had to free up 639k of ram - if you were lucky! Nice, I actually got to 621 at one point, but that was without loading essential stuff you needed to play games, like Mouse and Sound, so I count 617 as my best effort, and yes, those boot menus was "wonderful" :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com http://www.teammirage.com "A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke" --Groucho Marx--

Read my post above where I said just unplug the cable from the wall if you are paranoid about getting attacked. I had DSL and it came with an access manager that worked just like a modem dialup. no one could get in if that wasn't loaded. I've seen many posts to the contrary. I never keep virus scanners memory resident. It's just not needed if you configure your internet software correctly plus they can screw up the installation of software. I just use F-Prot for dos and scan when I think I have a reason to. Don >One thing you should do is to use not only TCP/IP but also NetBEUI. Having installed both protocols you can change your network settings so that File- and Printersharing is only availabe over NetBEUI. NetBEUI is not routable, thus your sharing is unavailable from the Internet. The router will send communication to one or the other pc by default. If you wish to use both for hosting, you have to use non-standard GPL TCP/IP ports for one of the machines. Alison has an explanation for doing that on her Eaglewoman pages. It is not rocket science but may sound a bit confusing. Running as a client is unaffected, but it may take a bit longer to get connected to VROC. It does work, though, and once connected there is no delay. Cheers, Jens

Jared, I just picked up the SMC to fill in for a Linksys that has gone tits up too many times. You say your forwarding ports to your PC but are you running a second PC as a server? I am able to run races on VROC without port forwading, but my old machine (that I would like to run as a server) has the host & join options greyed out even if I forwarded the ports or run the second machine in DMZ. The VROC FAQ's only suggest uninstalling Winvroc and removing registry entries for Winvroc then reinstalling. So far this hasn't helped. Some had suggested disabling DHCP server for the router and setting the machines with a fixed IP. Is that needed? Is there any better idiot-proof routine for setting up a server that covers the normal situations one would encounter? To set up a server that people in the outside world can connect to requires port-forwarding. Yes, you will need a specific IP address on your internal subnet to forward to, but this can be DHCP using the SMC Barricade as the DHCP server that is built-in can 'remember' a computer (using the ethernet card's MAC address) and always assign the same IP address to it whenever it asks for one. I don't host VROC games on my setup, but I do have a server that can be connected to directly and it works fine. I have used this setup to host VROC games in the past, but I can't remember with what success that was. -- Jared Earle - Nightfall Games - http://nightfall.co.uk "There is no SPORK"

...and for the Monty Python impaired, here's the transcript of the skit to make this thread a bit easier to follow over the next couple of days.... Eric Idle: Very fussable, isn't it? Very fussable. All: Right, all right. Graham Chapman: Good glass of Chateau de Chasselas, ain't just that, sire? Terry Jones: Oh, you're right there, Obadiah. Graham Chapman: Right. Eric Idle: Who would have thought, thirty years ago, we'd all be sitting here drinking Chateau de Chaselet, eh? All: Aye, aye. Michael Palin: Them days we were glad to have the price of a cup of tea. Graham Chapman: Right! A cup of cold tea! Michael Palin: Right! Eric Idle: Without milk or sugar! Terry Jones: Or tea! Michael Palin: In a cracked cup and all. Eric Idle: Oh, we never used to have a cup! We used to have to drink out of a rolled-up newspaper! Graham Chapman: The best we could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth. Terry Jones: But you know, we were happy in those days, although we were poor. Michael Palin: Because we were poor! Terry Jones: Right! Michael Palin: My old dad used to say to me: "Money doesn't bring you happiness, son!" Eric Idle: He was right! Michael Palin: Right! Eric Idle: I was happier then and I had nothing! We used to live in this tiny old tumbled-down house with great big holes in the roof. Graham Chapman: House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one room, all twentysix of us, no furniture, half the floor was missing, we were all huddled together in one corner for fear of falling. Terry Jones: You were lucky to have a room! We used to have to live in the corridor! Michael Palin: Oh, we used to dream of living in a corridor! Would have been a palace to us! We used to live in an old watertank on a rubbish tip. We'd all woke up every morning by having a load of rotten fish dumped all over us! House, huh! Eric Idle: Well, when I say a house, it was just a hole in the ground, covered by a sheet of tarpaulin, but it was a house to us! Graham Chapman: We were evicted from our hole in the ground. We had to go and live in a lake! Terry Jones: You were lucky to have a lake! There were 150 of us living in a shoebox in the middle of the road! Michael Palin: A cardboard box? Terry Jones: Aye! Michael Palin: You were lucky! We lived for three months in a rolled-up newspaper in a septic tank! We used to have to go up every morning, at six o'clock and clean the newspaper, go to work down the mill, fourteen hours a day, week in, week out, for six pence a week, and when we got home, our dad would slash us to sleep with his belt! Graham Chapman: Luxury! We used to have to get up out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot grubble, work twenty hours a day at mill, for two pence a month, come home, and dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were lucky! Terry Jones: Well, of course, we had it tough! We used to have to get up out of the shoebox in the middle of the night, and lick the road clean with our tongues! We had to eat half a handful of freezing cold grubble, work twenty-four hours a day at mill for four pence every six years, and when we got home, our dad would slice us in two with a breadknife! Eric Idle: Right! I had to get up in the morning, at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill and pay millowner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our dad would kill us and dance about on our graves, singing Hallelujah! Michael Palin: Aah. Are you trying to tell the young people of today that, and they won't believe you! All: No, no they won't! C: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. 'E's dead, that's what's wrong with it! O: No, no, 'e's uh,...he's resting. C: Look, matey, I know a dead parrot when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now. O: No no he's not dead, he's, he's restin'! Remarkable bird, the Norwegian Blue, idn'it, ay? Beautiful plumage! C: The plumage don't enter into it. It's stone dead. O: Nononono, no, no! 'E's resting! C: All right then, if he's restin', I'll wake him up! (shouting at the cage) 'Ello, Mister Polly Parrot! I've got a lovely fresh cuttle fish for you if you show...(owner hits the cage) O: There, he moved! C: No, he didn't, that was you hitting the cage! O: I never!! C: Yes, you did! O: I never, never did anything... C: (yelling and hitting the cage repeatedly) 'ELLO POLLY!!!!! Testing! Testing! Testing! Testing! This is your nine o'clock alarm call! (Takes parrot out of the cage and thumps its head on the counter. Throws it up in the air and watches it plummet to the floor.) C: Now that's what I call a dead parrot. O: No, no.....No, 'e's stunned! C: STUNNED?!? O: Yeah! You stunned him, just as he was wakin' up! Norwegian Blues stun easily, major. C: Um...now look...now look, mate, I've definitely 'ad enough of this. That parrot is definitely deceased, and when I purchased it not 'alf an hour ago, you assured me that its total lack of movement was due to it bein' tired and shagged out following a prolonged squawk. O: Well, he's...he's, ah...probably pining for the fjords. C: PININ' for the FJORDS?!?!?!? What kind of talk is that?, look, why did he fall flat on his back the moment I got 'im home? O: The Norwegian Blue prefers keepin' on it's back! Remarkable bird, id'nit, squire? Lovely plumage! C: Look, I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there. (pause) O: Well, o'course it was nailed there! If I hadn't nailed that bird down, it would have nuzzled up to those bars, bent 'em apart with its beak, and VOOM! Feeweeweewee! C: "VOOM"?!? Mate, this bird wouldn't "voom" if you put four million volts through it! 'E's bleedin' demised! O: No no! 'E's pining! C: 'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!! (pause) O: Well, I'd better replace it, then. (he takes a quick peek behind the counter) O: Sorry squire, I've had a look 'round the back of the shop, and uh, we're right out of parrots. C: I see. I see, I get the picture. O: <pause> I got a slug. (pause) C: Pray, does it talk? O: Nnnnot really. C: WELL IT'S HARDLY A BLOODY REPLACEMENT, IS IT?!!???!!? O: Well! I never wanted to do this in the first place. I wanted to be... A LUMBERJACK! Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com http://www.teammirage.com "A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke" --Groucho Marx--

Good choice, but..... I'll see your "Holy Grail" and raise you a "Life of Brian"..... In the mean time, here's one for our Australian cousins, gotta give something back to people who have the good taste to run such an exciting series as the Super V8 series or what they call it these days --- Bruce I: Good evening, ladies and bruces! Bruce II: Hello, Bruce. Bruce I: Hello, Bruce. Bruce III: Hello, Bruce. Bruce I: Hey, Bruce. Bruce II: What's all this lot, Bruce? Bruce I: It's very nice to be here at the Hollywood Bowl this evening! We're all philosophy professors from the University of Woolamaloa, Australia! All Bruces: Hey, Australia, Australia, Australia! God love ya! Bruce I: I teach Hegelian philosophy, Bruce here teaches Aristotolean philosophy, and Bruce here is in charge of the sheep dip. Bruce II: [Cough] Bloody difficult work, I tell ya! Bruce I: I'll tell you what is thirsty work watching this garn of human. Bruce, why don't you just stick out a few of these little free examples from your ----. Bruce I: All right! Now, the reason we do this, ladies and bruces, is frankly over here we find your American beer is a little like making love in a canoe! Bruce III: Making love in a canoe? Bruce I: It's fucking close to water! Well now, we're going to try and raise the tone a little here by singing a nice intellectual song for for those two or three of you in the audience... Bruce II: Right! Bruce I: ...who understand these things. So, here we go! All Bruces : Immanuel Kant was a real pissant Who was very rarely stable Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar Who could think you under the table David Hume could out-consume Schopenhauer and Hegel And Wittgenstein was a beery swine Who was just as sloshed as Schlegel There's nothing Nietszche couldn't teach ya 'Bout the raising of the wrist Socrates himself was permanently pissed Bruce II: How do you like that? All right! Bruce I: Let's hold it a second. I can see some of these bruces are in a bit of a playful mood tonight. Ain't that, Bruce? Bruce II: Yeah, Bruce. Bruce I: Some of the ones that don't have straws up their nose. Anyway, why don't we do something rather... Why don't we get some of these guys to sing along with us? ----. Bruce II: Ok, I've got the words somewhere. Bruce I: Right! Ready! Bruce II: Right! Ready! All Bruces & Audience : Immanuel Kant was a real pissant Who was very rarely stable Bruce II: Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy... Bruce I: They're a typical Hollywood audience! All the kids are on drugs, and all the adults are on roller skates! Have we got any...have we got anything bigger to put the words up for these rather shortsighted people? Bruce II: This is Bruce from the Biology Department. Bruce I: All right. Okay, here we go. All Bruces & Audience : Immanuel Kant was a real pissant Who was very rarely stable Bruce II: Come on! All Bruces & Audience : Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar Who could take you under the table David Hume could out-consume Schopenhauer and Hegel And Wittgenstein was a beery swine Who was just as sloshed as Schlegel There's nothing Nietszche couldn't teach ya 'Bout the raising of the wrist Socrates himself was permanently pissed John Stuart Mill of his own free will On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill Plato they say could stick it away Half a crate of whiskey every day Aristotle, Aristotle was a buggar for the bottle Hobbes was fond of his Dram And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart "I drink, therefore I am !" Yes Socrates himself is particularly missed A lovely little thinker But a bugger when he's pissed --- Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com http://www.teammirage.com "A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke" --Groucho Marx--

I've never been able to run GPL while my ZoneAlarm is running. It might lock up at any point, and it's kicked me out of a league race before... :( Eldred -- Dale Earnhardt, Sr. R.I.P. 1951-2001 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPLRank - under construction...
