Guys,
Gonna need a new wheel soon, I think.
The biggest feature I have loved about my old MSFF is that the wheel is
optically encoded.
This has meant years of trouble free steering, and no pot replacements! At
last!! :-) Remember the days of the old thrustmaster wheels, where you were
replaceing pots almost monthly!!?
Anyhow, I'm considering the MOMO, but I don't want to step back into the pot
replacement days - I know the LWFF has a pot, but does the MOMO?
What other wheels are optical?
Thanks.
R.

I made my own wheel/pedal set and wired it up to the sound card. I've
been using the cheap 100K pots and replace them quite often, sometimes just
moments before the green falls during a league race :-). Any case, How is
the "Optical" set up? What is used and how is it used? If someone could
explain I'd like to tinker with just such a setup for the home made wheel
(and if possible, the gas, brake, and clutch).

As far as I know, the MSFFW is the only optical wheel.

As I used to use it one year, its pedals were getting jumpy.

If you have a mouse with a ball, not the new ones with the laser stuff, open it
and you'll understand what is an optical stuff.
The thing is quit simple, there is a wheel witth hole in it at the edge. In on
side of the wheel there is a light source and at the other side there is a light
resistor, this is a resistor wich is resistance to electrecity change with the
amout of ligt it receive.

My Interact V3 is optical (although the pedals aren't).
Not the best wheel, though it does okay with a home-
-made mounting bracket (otherwise it seems designed
purely for truck sims, and other things with near-
-horizontal steering wheels!)
Jonny
Is that one of those ones that is designed to sit in your lap? An
interesting idea, though it looks like it could be a bit uncomfortable.
(Hmmm, how about a rumble effects wheel that sits in your lap?)

Yup, it's supposed to sit either on a desk in front of
you or on the chair under your legs. The wheel adjusts
from horizontal, to about 45 degrees.
Mine attaches to a ~40 degree bracket I've cobbled
together, which pegs to my desk - thus giving me a
sensible wheel angle ;-)

if there's nothing on the MOMO box I would guess it uses pots.
Still have my trusty Thrusty T2, but converted the wheel + pedals to optical
myself.
Got sick of replacing pots.
3 green LEDs, 3 resistors, 3 Light Dependent Resistors and some plastic
tube - 2 sizes so one fits inside the other - LED at far end of one tube,
LDR at near end of other tube. No maintenance for about a year and half so
far, with nearly daily GPL.

Wow...too bad all of us aren't electronics wizards...the wheel companies
would be out of business--or, they'd have to use decent parts in the first
place!!

Any way we could get some pictures of that, or DIY instructions? I'd be
curious to see that, myself.

I would like to see a picture of your setup. I'm just about to start
building my second home made controller set and would like to see the
optical system on a home made system. If you have pictures I'd appreciate
it if you could send them to me.

I also got *9]\'ed off with the crap torsion springs on the pedals which
kept breaking every 6 months or so, so made my own using compression springs
on the standard pedals. How hard would it have been for them to do it right
in the first place.
