I know it hasn't got much to do with simracing but what is the best alterative to the defrag utility that comes with windows?
I like O&O Defrag for Windows. I think you can find it at www.cnet.com in their downloads section. Diskeeper is my choice, but it is not free. You can download a 30 day trial though. http://www.diskeeper.com/execsoft.asp "James Carter" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9t9rgd$n8q$[email hidden]... > I know it hasn't got much to do with simracing but what is the best > alterative to the defrag utility that comes with windows? > > >
Diskeeper rocks - well worth every penny IMHO. For sure - the utilities that come with Winders OS's suck bad - you defintely need 3rd party stuff for this. VOPT -- check it at www.goldenbow.com It's quick and has many features. $40 last I checked and I'm still waiting for the XP version but it's worth every penny.

If you have two partitions and dualboot you will be able to completely defrag one partition at a time with the defrag that Bill supplies. Jone.

I found diskeeper to be worthless trash that coudn't defrag its way out of a paper bag. Any defragger that can't clean a 6gb data partition with 60% free space needs a slap. I've used a few, O&O is a bit better than diskeeper IME. cheers John

I run a 98se/2000sp2 duel boot system, if I boot in to 2000 and defrag my 98 partition would it screw up 98 ?, I would presume it would not recognise the system files that should not be moved and move them anyway. Anyone know ? Mark

My philosophy on this one was to have the 2k system in NTFS, on the grounds that win2k is less likely to screw up 98 than 98 is to screw up 2k. This seemed logical at the time. -- Spadge Fromley ''collect your rubbsih and in my belly it will go ...''

I don't think it will mess up W98. W2k recognizes W98 on install and creates a boot menu. There is no reason why the defrag util should mess this up. If it moved all files on C it would move the boot files for W2k also. I dualboot W2k/W2k so I'm not 110% sure. If you start up defrag in W2k and choose Analyze, you will probably se that it recognizes the System files (green). Jone.

I tried analysing it today and it didn't show the system files on the 98 partition, guess I better not try it just in case, I'll carry on defragging 98 in 98 but that defrager is just so bloody hypnotic I cant help just sitting there and watching it :o) Mark

Same here, dual boot Win2k/98se. Actually I do this from Win2k with Diskeeper, all partitions automatically at 2:00 AM, but I have all partitions FAT32, no NTFS. Don't know if it'd work the NTFS/FAT32 way. -- Tom Hesselman Greenville, WI
I'm not sure about the various flavors, or service packs, but I've been using the defrag from Windows ME to defrag Windows98 for almost a year now, with no problems, and it's like 100 times faster. GJ "Tom Hesselman" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...
